Kazak triple medallion rug, south west Caucasus, late 19th/early 20th century, 6ft. 7in. X 4ft. 11in. 2.01m. X 1.50m. Minimal wear; narrow vertical strips of repiling to lower end; other small repairs and crease marks in places. Terracotta field with three centre octagons with hooked medallions within; filler ornaments of small animals, rosettes and two pale gold hooked motifs; ivory main border of medallion and bracket design; mid-blue guards of small quartered medallions; inner pale green stripe of florets. Lustrous wool in a rich palette; soft handle.
Afshar rug, Kerman area, south east Persia, circa 1920s, 5ft. 9in. X 4ft. 4in. 1.75m. X 1.32m. Overall wear with losses to ends; small holes; stencilled no. S22444 verso. Dark blue field with all over bracket and flowerhead design; pale blue floral main border; blue and white striped floret guards.
A George III oak and flame mahogany longcase clock, 31cm arched painted dial, Arabic chapter, the arch painted with a lady dressed for winter, florally painted spandrels and centre, pierced steel hands, date aperture, 30 hour movement striking on a bell, the hood with swan neck pediment and brass ball and spire finial, brass capped reeded columns, shaped rectangular door to trunk flanked by reeded quarter columns, bracket feet, 225cm high, c.1810James Akers was born in Nottingham in 1782, son of James Akers of Derby and probably apprenticed to a Nottingham maker, like his rather more ephemeral elder brother William. He set up in Derby as a clock and watchmaker in 1802, having married Hannah Houlgate at St. Werburgh's church that June. There were two sons. Two watches are known along with an 8-day clock and two other 30 hour examples, all with painted dials. Akers died in 1833.

He moved to London in 1780 and died at Bolt Court, Fleet St in 1788. His nephew, John Whitehurst II (1761-1834) took over the business which survived until 1861. He introduced round brass dials on his clocks, much imitated subsequently, in 1760.
