An 18th century ebonised cased striking bracket clock with 19th century movement, the silvered brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and inscribed 'Edward Browne, Norwich'. 51 cm high.Provenance: This clock has been within the same Norfolk clerical family since it was made in the 18th century by Norwich clock maker Edward Browne. It was known to the vendor as being in the possession of her great-grandfather, Rev William Cowper Johnson II (1845-1916) who it is said inherited it from his father Rev William Cowper Johnson (1813-1893). The latter was the son of noted "Johnny of Norfolk", cousin of the poet William Cowper. Johnny was companion and carer for Cowper in the poet's last years, bringing him to live in Dereham, Norfolk until Cowper's death in 1800. Rev "Johnny" Johnson (1769-1833) met with William Blake to discuss the creation, by Blake, of a memorial to Cowper. The memorial was completed and resides in Yaxham Church, Dereham. William Cowper, when earlier living in the Buckinghamshire town of Olney and close friends with the town's vicar, Rev John Newton, composed with Newton the Olney Hymns - one of which is Amazing Grace.
