A William & Mary walnut and marquetry Scriptor (or Escritoire), circa 1690, the moulded cornice over a cushion drawer, with a hinged fall, opening to reveal an ratcheted writing slope and an well fitted group of pigeon holes and drawers, the base with two short and two long graduated drawers and set on bracket feet, the whole decorated with panels of seaweed marquetry, some alterations including replacement brassware, 162cm high, 112cm wide, 49cm highProvenance: previously at Lindsaylands House, BiggarCondition reportGenerally the piece is in good condition, but would benefit from a gentle clean and wax polish. There are a few losses, but nothing of serious concern. The top left corner of the cornice is missing. There are two secret drawers behind two pigeon holes inside. A few pieces of moulding are lacking. See images. The hinged fall works fine, Lock is 19th century replacement. One drawer handle is loose and inside. The veneers are showing signs of cracking and lifting in places, especially lower section of fall front. There is a visible horizontal split in the veneer. A good restorer should be able to make this stable without too much bother.Marquetry is essentially complete. I think would improve enormously after a clean and tidy up.
