A 'Will O The Wisp' Lady's Bicycle Frame. Offered by Frank Huddlebridge of Chelsea in the late 1890s. this sound frame has a cottered bottom bracket aperture, blind end forks and an intriguingly-manufactured frame. Also, a 22-inch 'New Western' gentleman's frame; also by a London manufacturer, Arthur West of Hammersmith. (2)
A c1882 Thomas Humber 'Cripper' Tricycle. The Automatic-Steerer model, it has 40-inch driving wheels propelled by a good quality inch-pitch block chain, and a 24-inch steering wheel, the wheels all with good, useable black rubber solid tyring. The 25-inch wide handlebars with good turned wooden grips hold a stout nickel-plated lever which operates the Humber patented plunger brake with its control operated through the centre of the headstock; an interesting design. There are foot rests mounted to the front forks with block rubber grips, a lamp bracket and front mudguard. This tricycle is complete and highly useable, but the frame needs painting.
An R. S. Lovelace Lady's Bicycle. A rare quality machine made in Henstridge (in the civil parish of Somerset) circa 1898. A manufacturer of renown, patenting and manufacturing high quality bicycles of his own design with some very advanced 'lightweight' features. The 19-inch frame would suit a small lady, 17-inch handlebars with a lever-operated plunger brake to the front wheel, fixed rear wheel, narrow section inch-pitch chain operated by a 5-inch chain wheel. archetypal 'Lovelace' braced bottom bracket, circular section tubing for the rear and front forks and patented hub lugs for straight spoking. Photographs and supporting paperwork accompany this lot. (2)
A Lady's Loop Frame Bicycle. Nicely restored with green enamel and nickel-plated parts, this machine will date circa 1900, having inch-pitch block chain, lever-operated stirrup front brake and back-pedalling rear brake, leather saddle, block rubber pedals, cottered bottom bracket and good 28-inch tyres fitted.
A c1928 Le Chemineau of St Etienne, a quality French Gentleman's bicycle with original green enamel finish with gilt lining and decals on the long wheelbase frame, square section mudguards, the front with a licence holder bracket, centre pull and interestingly designed calliper brakes, flat 20-inch handlebars, quick release wheels and distinctive of the maker, who was a pioneer of Derailleur gearing, an original Le Chemineau three-speed Derailleur is fitted and controlled by a delightful lever system on the top tube. A rare original example of the marque. See also lot 496
A Raleigh Path Racer, having a 24-inch frame numbered 336680, with a black email finish (possibly original) with logos and 'All Steel' motif. Nickel-plated semi-drop 20-inch handlebars, inverted lever operating a stirrup brake, fixed wheel gearing, tangent spoked wooded wheels and 26-inch Avon Cord tyres. A Brooks B15 saddle is fitted, as is an unusual lamp bracket designed for handlebars with a forward extension with a battery lamp and bell fitted.
A c1900 Lady's Loop Frame Tricycle. Believed manufactured by Humber & Co., a black-painted tricycle with a 20-inch frame and 26-inch wheels. Other features include a cottered concentric bottom bracket for chain adjustment, left-hand fitted inch-pitch block chain, a combination Starley rear axle and band brake, and a thumb lever stirrup brake to the front wheel.
A c1899 Marriot & Cooper 'Olympia' Tandem Tricycle. Promoted as 'easy to steer and propel in luxurious ease', these tandems were very popular in the late Victorian period. This example has been stove-enamel black with nickel-plated flat handlebars and a rim brake and contracting back pedalling brake are fitted to rear wheel. Other features include non-matching leather saddles, rear rack and lamp bracket.
1926 Sunbeam Lady's Loop Frame Bicycle. With a frame number of 152128, this very original bicycle boasts a 20-inch black enamel frame, 26-inch wheels, roller lever operated stirrup brakes, two-speed bottom bracket, split rubber pedals, figured leather saddle and a padded black cover, front basket and Sunbeam decals.
An early large-scale clockwork Günthermann 4-4-2 Floor Locomotive, approx 17" long and finished in green with black and gold trim, red wheels with silver rims, the cabsides featuring a deep tumblehome to the bottom and uncommon A-G-G-W trademarks in diamond formation (a variation on the better-known A-S-G-W version, 'G-G' believed to be the widow of Siegried Günthermann), the model having embossed bar-type frames, air tanks to each side of boiler, 2 brass domes and safety-valve casing, dummy bell on bracket behind chimney (presently detached), and an operating bell worked from the front axle when running. The mechanism wound through a right-side driving wheel, is released by pressure on the rear drivers, overall F, some paint flaking from cab front and other areas, some areas retouched e.g. wheel rims, mech tested okay but one driving wheel is loose on axle, one buffer broken, small damages to front lamps, one dome and other areas, lacks tender, boiler-top bell detached
