IllustratedThe original model from the workshop of André-Charles Boulle and his sons is after a design by Jean Bérain and Gilles-Marie Oppenordt.The reference to the 1893 sale on the paper label on the reverse is most likely that of a similar, though smaller, one bought shortly after the French Revolution by George Capel-Conigsby, 5th Earl of Essex (d. 1839) and sold at Christie's in 1893. IllustratedCharles Goode is recorded as working in the Strand. He was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1686 and died in 1730.The appearance of the cypher CW or CWP on work by Goode has been debated over the last thirty years with a number of opinions offered.
