An 18th century mahogany commode chest of drawers, probably Dutch, with serpentine front, four frieze drawers with brass drop handles, shaped backplates and lock escutcheons and with cockbeading to each drawer front, flanked by fluted rounded columns and raised on shaped bracket feet. Width 120 cm (see illustration).
A Victorian mahogany longcase clock, with swans neck pediment above the arched painted dial and eight day striking movement, the case with applied half round twist mouldings and raised on bracket feet. Height 218 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally extremely good condition. It is of a good colour and there are no significant losses to any of the woodwork. There are some very minor nibbles to the left and right hand bottom edges of the bracket feet but these are minor. The left hand barley sugar twist column is a little loose and has been broken at some point in two places but there are no losses. We have the weights and pendulum. There is however no catgut. If weight is applied to both the going and strike trains the movement does however seem to operate. It is however a little dirty. The clock face has some paint loss to the top of the dial and there appears to have been overpainting to the corner spandrels.
A George III mahogany linen press, with detachable moulded cornice above a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing hanging space, the base fitted with two short and two long graduated drawers with brass drop handles with circular backplate and all raised on bracket feet. Width 145 cm (see illustration).
A large late 19th century Arts & Crafts partners desk, the rectangular top with tooled leather writing surface, each pedestal fitted with three drawers and a cupboard. Width 183 cm, depth 136 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The desk is oak. The tooled leather writing surface is in poor condition. The surrounding timber is in generally good order with only minor marks and scuffs as one would expect. The six drawer fronts are in generally good condition and the handles and lock escutcheons are original. They are very tarnished and dirty. The drawer stops appear to be missing. The sides of the desk are in good order as are the panels either side of the kneehole. Both cupboard doors are in good condition and have the original handles. We have no keys for any of the locks. The plinth base is scuffed as one would expect. The desk has never had a drawer above the kneehole. There are however old holes to the left and right hand side of each side of the kneehole suggesting that there has been some form of arch or bracket to the underside of the desk surface. If so this has probably been removed due to height restrictions.
A Queen Anne walnut hanging cabinet, with arched moulded top above a fielded panelled door opening to shelves and flanked by fluted columns and supported by a later mahogany bracket. Width 72 cm, depth 25 cm, height including bracket 105 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cupboard is in generally very good condition and is an extremely good colour. There are some very minor losses in places. The top arched moulding has two small edge losses to the left and right of the centre breakfront. There is a piece of moulding missing to the bottom right hand corner between the bottom of the arched moulding and the door corner. There are further veneer cracks bottom left and right of the door and a small section of edge moulding and crossbanding is missing at the left hand door foot. The sides of the piece are in good order. The supporting plinth is later. The interior is in generally very good order.
A mahogany bookcase, in the Georgian style, with detachable cornice above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals enclosing shelves and drawers, the base fitted with a pair of panelled cupboard doors and raised on bracket feet. Width 100 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase top is Georgian. The base is later and at best Edwardian. It could be later. The detachable cornice is in good condition. There is a small piece of return moulding missing from the right hand top rear corner just below the pediment. This is approximately 8 cm long. The doors are not warped and in good condition as is the interior and the drawers. The base is in generally good condition with no issues.
A Regency mahogany low cupboard, with moulded edge and crossbanded frieze above a pair of panelled doors with beaded moulding and raised on splayed bracket feet. Width 118 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cupboard is in generally good condition. The top is flat and has only minor marks commensurate with the age of the piece. The left hand door is not warped and closes and locks as it should. One section of beaded moulding is a little loose but the piece is not detached. The right hand door when closed has a very small warp at the bottom approximately 2 mm gap when the door is fully closed. The lock is present but we do not have the key. There is one small quarter round section of moulding missing to the point of the top right hand corner. There are two stress fractures to the mahogany on the right hand door. These are not significant. The bracket feet are original and in good condition. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. Height 95 cm, depth 46 cm, width 118 cm. Width at feet 125.5 cm.
An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, with swans neck pediment with blind fretwork above the arched glazed door enclosing the 11.5 inch arched painted dial with moon phase and eight day striking movement by Jn. Smith Pittenweem flanked by fluted columns, with long trunk door and conforming base with bracket feet. Height 207 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in generally good condition and of good colour. There has been an old break between the swan's necks which should be visible on our image. This is minor. The trunk is in generally good order. The door is not warped and there are no problems with the sides of the case or base. The backboards are original. There is some very long gone old woodworm holes in the softwood on the backboards but these are very minor. We have both weights and pendulum. The movement appears to be complete and is striking and the movement appears to be ticking also. We have not tested the moon phase. The dial is in original untouched condition with some minor surface scratches and paint losses. The most evident damage being to points behind two of the movement pillars. We do not think that the clock is a marriage as the cheeks are not built up and the mask fits around the dial.
A George III oak housekeepers cupboard, with moulded cornice above a series of cupboards and drawers flanked by quarter column corners and all raised on bracket feet. Width 178 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Height 218 cm, width across cornice 185 cm, depth at cornice 66 cm. The cupboard is in generally good untouched original condition. The cornice is in generally good order with minor losses to the front right hand corner outer edge. The three doors to the upper section are flat with no significant warping. The left hand drawer opens to what was hanging space but is now later modern shelving. The centre door opens to original shaped shelving, the right hand door opens to modern shelving and cup hooks and was originally simply hanging space. The brass knob handles are later and two cover old lock escutcheons. Both drawers are in generally good order with minor old repairs around the lock escutcheons. The sides of the piece are in generally good condition with minor old stress fractures down the timber joins and various scuffs and marks. The base drawers are all in good condition with no significant damage to any of the cockbeading or the drawer fronts. The handles if not original go through the original handle holes. The sides of the base are in good order. The feet are all original but scuffed and marked as one would expect and there is a loss to the front bottom section of the front left leg and to the rear right hand back leg. The piece is structurally very sound and we can see no evidence of any woodworm. The timber is generally very dry and requires a good clean and wax.
An 18th century walnut tall boy, in two sections, the top half with a moulded cornice above two short and three long graduated drawers with later brass drop handles and lock escutcheons, the base fitted with three further drawers and all raised on bracket feet. Width 98 cm (see illustration).
An early 19th century oak and mahogany banded longcase clock by Carruthers of Langholm, with two-train striking movement, subsidiary date and second dials, the case raised on bracket feet (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock movement is extremely dirty and dusty. It is however ticking for approximately 1 minute before stopping and the strike mechanism does operate when advanced to the hour. The movement seems to be complete but definitely requires a clean if it is to run correctly. The case is in generally very good condition with no significant faults. Neither door is warped and the feet and plinth are original. The colour of the case is generally good. There will have been some form of pediment between the swan's necks which is missing.
A George III oak longcase clock by William Nicholson of Whitehaven, with thirty hour movement, the case with swans neck pediment, long trunk door, reeded quarter column corners and raised on bracket feet. Height 210 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This is a 30 hour clock. It has false winding apertures in order to make it appear as 8 day clocks which were much more expensive to make. The hood is in generally good condition with the exception of a cracked glass. There will also have been something between the swans necks which is missing, possibly a wheatsheaf. The remainder of the hood is in generally good order with only minor surface scratches and marks as one would expect. The brass dial is in good order but has lost much of its silvering. We have the clock weight and pendulum which is unfortunately missing the metal suspension. The clock does however tick without the pendulum and strikes as it should. The seatboard that would support the movement is missing. The movement does however fit the door aperture and we do not think that the clock is a marriage. The case is a typical Cumbrian case. The door is not warped, the sides of the case are in good order as are the base and bracket feet. The case is a little dry and could do with a good wax.
A George III mahogany gentleman's press, with moulded cornice above a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing hanging space, the base with two false above two long graduated drawers with brass drop handles with oval backplates and raised on bracket feet. Width 128.5 cm (see illustration).
