By direct descent to the current owner From family accounts it is said that Sir William Henry Charles Wemyss Cooke moved from Wheatley Hall to Upper Hall in Ledbury, Herefordshire in 1907, then to Ranby Hall in Lincolnshire in 1910. Cooke finally settled at Wyld Court in Berkshire where his interests in animals and horticulture were pursued. A George III 'red' walnut chest on chest, circa 1770, the dentil moulded cornice above two short and four long graduated drawers to the upper section, flanked by pierced fretwork quarter columns, the lower section with three long graduated drawers, on ogee shaped bracket feet, 192cm high, 115cm wide, 62cm deepCondition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old splits and chips. some minor old repairs. The drawer fronts of the two top drawers have warped so appear curved in shape. Old splits and some division to some drawer linings as a result of warping/ shrinkage. Some other warping of drawers may require some adjustment. Some causes some gaps around edges of drawer fronts. Please refer to additional images. To the rear uppermost corner of the right side panel, the rear corner of the cornice has been crudely cut/ shaved (see image) This looks old and may even be original. A corresponding section of adjacent moulding appears to have been cut and removed, but then put back into place again with use of small nails. (see image) Handles, escutcheons and locks appear original. Lacking keys. The fittings to the interior of the drawer fronts have been papered over previously and torn away so only glued down fragments remain. One key escutcheon lacking on nail. The pierced pilasters are an unusual feature. Some replacement blocks and drawer runner to interior of carcass. Two slender later associated 19th century elements to the rear panels otherwise they are original throughout, as are the feet and drawer linings. Attractive original colour and patina. A rare South German steel and brass mounted table top book press, 17th or early 18th century, the arched frame mounted with faceted and gadrooned finials, above twin Solomonic column supports, descending to a rectangular base raised on bracket feet, 33cm high, the base 28 x 16cmThe present book press shares some stylistic similarities with examples in oak that have recently appeared on the market. See for example Christie's New York, 27 October 2015, lot 172 ($6,250), for a press with twin baluster uprights and a similarly architectural design. Y A fine Vizagapatam ivory veneered, lac-engraved and sandalwood work box, circa 1780-90, of rectangular section, the hinged cover engraved with a residence with turrets, within broad lotus borders, above conforming sides with further architectural scenes, 9cm high, 28.5cm wide, 21cm deep; and another Anglo-Indian casket, mid-19th century, of lobed square form, the gadrooned cover and sides engraved with interlaced strapwork and vine leaves; the interior with ebony banding, 7cm high, 13cm squareThe use of architectural decorative motifs is typical of later 18th century Vizagapatam engraved works. See for example Christie's South Kensington, 1 April 2014, lot 207 (£10,000) for a similar box raised on bracket feet. It is possible that the central architectural scene, with its distinctive gates and turrets, is based on print sources from England or even the Netherlands. A pair of George II walnut side chairs, circa 1750, the shaped backs centred by a pierced and scrolling vase shaped splat, above the padded and upholstered drop in seat, on tapering cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, each 105cm high, 55cm wide, 53cm deepClosely delated designs of chair can be seen in William De La Cour's First Book of Ornament, 1741, 'Designs for Chairs'. The seat covers are in clean presentable condition. Good original surface, colour and patina throughout with some fading. All timber elements including seat rails are original. The chairs are of solid useable structure. One split to the corner of one seat rail is worthwhile simple re-gluing in order to prevent further splitting. One 'ear' bracket the top of one leg may be an old replacement. No old breaks or splicing to the legs or feet. There are additional old surface knocks to the legs as expected for age and use. A William IV mahogany collector's cabinet, circa 1835, the rectangular top above a pair of arched panel doors, opening to two banks of fifteen drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 141cm high, 72cm wide, 52.5cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. The depth of the interior of the drawers is The door lock is associated. The key is present to operate itone handle is lacking. The hinges to one door all have six screw apertures, the hinges to the other door have four screw apertures, therefore the hinges to one door have likely been changed. One hinge is lacking some screws. The top element of the cabinet has been cleaned/ polished perhaps a little more than adjacent sections, but appears to be original. The top left hand interior drawer is 'sticky' and may need some minor adjustment to operate easily. Some other drawers may need similar attention. The rear panel of the lining of the top left hand drawer appears associated. This drawer may have been adapted in part. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
