A Victorian walnut cased Britannia table top upright polyphon, with 19 9" discs. 54 cm x 42.5 cm x 25 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are two combs to the interior, the right hand one of which is intact, however the left hand comb has five teeth missing. The cast plate is earmarked for the Britannia Ste Croix Switzerland, Star Silver Depot, London. There is a Phillips head screw to the bracket holding the retaining bar. The mechanism does work and is in playing order. There are 19 discs some of which are slightly warped but all appear to be intact. The cabinet is in rather tired condition. The right hand door has a full length split with losses to the veneer. The left hand door is missing a piece of moulding which leaves an 11 cm gap between the two doors. The left hand door has small chips to the edge and small pieces of veneer missing. The lithographs to each door are intact but rather tired. The top of the cabinet looks like it has been painted at some time in its life and is a light chocolate brown colour. There are scuff marks throughout the ebonised base with small losses throughout. All in all a rather tired example, but one which works.
A George III oak chest of drawers, with two short and three long graduated drawers with brass drop handles and lock escutcheons and raised on bracket feet. Width 95 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Height 87 cm, depth 51 cm, width 95 cm. The chest is structurally sound. The colour is uniform. The top is manufactured from two planks and there is a slight shrinkage gap and minor nibbles between the two sections. There are other minor stress fractures, numerous old marks and small timber losses. None in our opinion are particularly significant. The left hand side of the piece has a loss in the timber to the bottom rear corner. The right hand side has a similar loss to the bottom rear corner. Drawers 2, 3 and 4 all have stress fractures along the bottom left hand edge. There is no movement however. All drawer fronts have scuffs, marks and minor scratches. The handles are not original but the back plates do cover the previous set of handle holes on all drawers but the bottom drawer. The right hand bottom drawer handle is missing its backplate. Two of the locks are missing. We have no keys. The lock escutcheons are probably later. All bracket feet are present and in good order.
An Edwardian walnut cased bracket clock, with three-train striking movement, with silvered brass dial, advance and retard and chime silent mechanisms, the case raised on brass bun feet. Width 33.5 cm, height 41 cm, depth 24 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This clock is in first class condition. The movement winds on all trains. It is currently ticking away and striking when advanced. The case is in exceptionally good order with only very minor blemishes.
William Dixon, Whitehaven, an 18th century longcase clock, the arched brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, inscribed W.M. Dixon Whithaven (sic), with cherub mask spandrels all beneath the arched painted dial with a seated female looking towards the sea, with eight day movement chiming on a bell, in oak case crossbanded with mahogany. Height 206 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains. The clock is currently ticking away. We have both weights and pendulum. The movement appears to strike when advanced. The upper half of the case backboards are later. There are some scratches and losses to the paintwork in the arched dial. The case is in reasonable condition. There are some timber fractures to the hood and slightly open corner joints. There are some stress fractures to the crossbanding around the door. The trunk door is not warped. The sides of the case and base are in generally good condition. The clock may at some point have had bracket feet but only the base moulding is currently present. There are three small pieces of dentil moulding missing beneath the clock hood.
A 19th century mahogany chest of drawers, with two short and three long drawers with wooden knob handles and cockbeading to each drawer front and raised on bracket feet. Width 118 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The top is in generally good order with no splits. There are some minor old ring marks and slight stress fractures to the veneers but no real problems. The crossbanded edge has a small loss to the left hand front corner. There is a similar small loss to the right hand rear corner. The left hand side has a full height stress fracture to the timber. The right hand side has some minor stress marks to the veneers but no real issues. The drawer fronts are all in good condition with no losses to the cockbeading. All handles are original. All locks are present. We have no keys. The bracket feet are in good condition at the front. The rear right hand bracket foot has a small timber loss to the rear top edge. The backboards are original and in good order.
A walnut cased grandmother clock, with three-train spring driven movement, with long trunk door and all raised on bracket feet. Height 171 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on all three trains. We do not have the pendulum so cannot tell if it is ticking away. It strikes when advanced but the movement seems sluggish. It is very dirty. The movement has eight hammers but only six gongs. Two appear to be missing. The face is in good condition. The case is in very good order with only very minor blemishes. The hood has no condition issues. The door is not warped and the sides and base of the case are in very good condition with only very minor surface marks.
A German carved wooden owl form clock, the eyes indicating the time, height 19 cm, and a wooden bracket (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock ticks when wound. The colour of the wood is uniform throughout. There is a small nick to the rear of the head. It is stamped to the rear base GES. GESCH Germany. When looking directly at it there are white marks around the dial on the left eye. This would appear to be the fixing adhesive for the dial (Plaster of Paris) has been damaged in some way. There is a small slightly large than pinhead size white mark to the front body just below the beak where it would appear the stained varnish has been rubbed or knocked off but overall the item is in nice condition. The accompanying bracket has had the right hand corner frieze glued back on. The centre right supporting bracket has a top to bottom split. There is an ink mark to the centre of the shelf. The centre left and extreme left supporting brackets appear to have been off sometime in their life as there are traces of glue but both appear to be free from any chips or cracks.
A Chinese silver plate on copper spirit kettle, late 19th century, in two sections, each of square form, the upper section with split bale handle with rectangular knopped lid and pierced strainer, the body decorated with panels of calligraphy, bamboo and peony, above a pierced base with further calligraphy and floral decoration with carrying handles to the side (replacement tap), overall height including handles 26 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The body is tarnished through age and wear. But there are no obvious visible splits or cracks. There are some question marks over the tap, there is lots of soldier where it joins the body. On one side of the handle it is struck secure the other side it is indistinctly struck with Western letters all above what appears to be a Chinese seal mark. One of the clasps that lock the bracket on the base to the top is missing its catch. The body is almost a uniform colour throughout. Other than the faults mentioned there are no faults beyond what you would expect of wear to the polish from age and use.
An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock by J. Spittall of Whitehaven, the case with swans neck pediment, with Verre Eglomise above the glazed door enclosing the eight day striking movement, the case with three quarter trunk door and conforming base raised on bracket feet. Height 232 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock winds on both trains. We have both weights and the pendulum. The clock is currently ticking away and appears to be striking as it should. The seconds hand is detached but we have it. There is a very small crack to the door glass in the top left hand corner below the arch. The case is in extremely good condition. It is of good colour and the door is not warped. The bracket feet are original. We have the key for the case door.
A George III mahogany longcase clock, with circular dial and two-train striking movement, the long trunk door with applied moulded edge flanked by canted angles and all raised on a plinth base. Height including finial 220 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains. The movement is very dirty. When weight is applied to the going train the clock appears to tick. We do not have the pendulum or key. The movement appears to strike when manually advanced. The silver dial is a little tarnished in places. We have both weights. The hood has a small loss to the unfinished timber at the top of the arch. All of the polished mahogany is in good order all round and the door is not warped. The trunk is in generally in good condition. The door is not warped and well figured. All mouldings appear to be present. The bracket feet are original. The right hand metal bracket that would hold the top open is missing. The interior is generally tired. The frieze is in reasonably good condition all round. The front right hand corner of the moulded edge has a small loss as has the rear left hand corner. The piece is structurally sound and the centre column in generally good condition. The quatreform base has some nibbles to the sharp edges as well has rubbing to the gilding. All four feet are in generally good condition but again with rubbing to the lacquered finish.
