Hanway (Jonas, merchant and politician, bap. 1712, d. 1786) Autograph Letter signed to Sir Joseph Banks, 1p., folio, Red Lion Square, London, 3rd April 1782, hailing Banks "as a friend to Mankind", probably in response to information received from Banks on Hanway's, Proposal for County Naval Free Schools to be built on waste lands, folds, browned, left hand margin slightly torn affecting a few letters.⁂ Sir Joseph Banks, baronet (1743-1820), naturalist and patron of science.Provenance: The Banks Letter, p. 394, recording the copy in the Dawson Turner Collection.
Castiglione (Baldassare) Il Libro del Cortegiano, second Aldine edition, collation: *4, a-o8, p6, woodcut printer's device on title and verso of otherwise blank final leaf, initial spaces with guide-letters, title and final leaf a little soiled and stained, one or two other leaves with light marginal staining, overall a good crisp and clean copy, old vellum, morocco label, lower cover soiled, spine lacking small portion at head (repaired), folio in 8s, Venice, sons of Aldus [Paulus Manutius], 1545.⁂ Second Aldine edition of a cornerstone of courtesy literature and one of the most celebrated and influential Italian 16th century texts, the perfect definition of a gentleman. Translated into most European languages, over one hundred editions appeared between the first Aldine edition (1528) and 1616. This second edition, a reprint of the first, is uncommon.Literature: Adams C931, EDIT 16 CNCE 10073; Renouard 131.4, cf. PMM 59, first edition.
Erotic poem.- [Mulgrave (John Sheffield, Earl of)] The Enjoyment, first edition, [traditionally attributed to John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester], drop-head title, contemporary manuscript correction "nor" for "for" 12 lines from the end, disbound, preserved in modern board folder, [Wing B5336A], folio, 1679.⁂ Rare erotic poem describing a night of passion which ends with the lovers lying "like Fish left gasping on the shore." There are two issues, this being the first cited by Wing, and located in 5 copies. The other issue [Wing B5336B] does not give London as the place of printing or the date.Provenance: John Brett-Smith with pencil note reading "ex Bute vol."
Americas.- Palafox Y Mendoza (Juan) Obras..de los Supremos Consejos de Indias, y Aragón, Obispo de la Puebla de los Angeles, y de Osma, Arzobispo electo de Megico, Virrey, y Capitan General de Nueva Espãna, 13 vol, in 15, engraved portrait of Palafox by Palomino after Velasquez, engraved portrait of Carlos III by Gil, further engraved portrait of Plafox by Anton Rosende, woodcut head- and tail-piece and initials, some spotting or foxing, some staining, contemporary mottled calf, some spine ends and corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, [Palau 209561; Medina 4001; Sabin 58299], folio Madrid, Gabriel Ramirez, 1762.⁂ Rare large paper copy (c.342 x 234mm.). This second edition is textually more accurate and far more appealing typographically than the first edition. Palafox was the Bishop of Puebla (1640−1655), and the interim Archbishop of Mexico (1640−1642). He also held the post of the Viceroy of New Spain from 10th June, 1642 to 23rd November, 1642.
Miller (John Frederick) Cimelia Physica: Figures of Rare and Curious Quadrupeds, Birds, &c ... with descriptions by George Shaw, 67 hand-coloured etched plates, 60 by or after Miller and 7 of floral subjects, bookplate of Thomas Philip Earl de Grey, ink stamp of Biblioteca di Pierpaolo Vaccarino, contemporary calf, rebacked with original spine laid down, red morocco spine label, gilt, folio, [Nissen IVB 638; Bird Books p.94; Stafleu & Cowan 6033; Wood p.465; Zimmer p.585], 1796.⁂ Miller was the son of the well-known botanical artist Johann Sebastian Müller. Miller and his brother James produced paintings from the sketches made by Sydney Parkinson on James Cook's first voyage. He went on to accompany Sir Joseph Banks (president of the Royal Society), as draughtsman, on his 1772 voyage to Iceland.

Lake District.- Letter in verse to Walter Cowperthwaite, parish-clerk of Cartmel, 1p., folio, n.p., n.d. [c. 1760s], complaining that the new priest will not cross the beck in Cartmel to give services at the writer's local church, tear along first line slightly obscuring text, folds, browned; and a small quantity of ephemera, including a pen and ink map of Piel Castle, or as titled here as the Pile of Fouldray, v.s., v.d. (sm. qty).
Virgilius Maro (Publius) Georgica Publii Virgilii Maronis Hexaglotta, presentation copy from the English translator, ink inscription to half title, related letter tipped-in, occasional faint marginal spotting, ink stamp to front pastedown, cracked hinges, later half morocco, rubbed, bumping to corners and extremities, folio, Gulielmi Nicol, 1827.⁂ The presentation inscription reads "For the Library of the Royal Institution from William Sotheby" and is dated February 1833.
Western Caribbean, Mosquito Coast.- [An account of the Miskito Kingdom (Mosquito Coast)], manuscript, 13pp., part only, incomplete at beginning and end, folds, browned, a few small tears to edges, folio, dated in text 1761.⁂ "6 July 1761 to Messes Hutchinson Moon & Co to satisfie a bill of exchange drawn by Henry Moon Esq Lieut: Governor of Jamaica for the service of the Mosquito shore - the inhabitants of that country are reckond independant of Spain & the kings does Homage to the Govr - the late king story of that Homage to the Duke of Portland, is that the Duke & Dutchess being to dine above stairs they pujt a full bottom perwig on him but having never gone up a pair of stairs he jumped up them as a cock does he talked plain bawdy to her so much that she did not know what to do... ."
Dictionaries.- Johnson (Samuel) A Dictionary of the English Language, seventh edition, engraved frontispiece portrait (some minor fraying and light damp-staining to margins, contemporary calf, gilt, wear to spine ends, joints splitting at head and foot, folio, for J.F. and C. Rivington, 1785.⁂ The first unabridged one-volume edition, printed immediately following Johnson's death in 1784.
Ireland.- Kavanagh (Arthur Macmorrough, politician, 1831-89) [Speech against the Irish Nationalist League], lithographed duplicated speech signed, 10pp., folds, slightly browned, folio, [c. 1885].⁂ The Irish National League was a nationalist political party in Ireland. It was founded on 17 October 1882 by Charles Stewart Parnell as the successor to the Irish National Land League after this was suppressed. Whereas the Land League had agitated for land reform, the National League also campaigned for self-government or Irish Home Rule, further enfranchisement and economic reforms.
Macclesfield copy.- Rymer (Thomas) Foedera Conventiones, Literae, et cujuscunque generis Acta Publica, Inter Reges Angliae, et alios quosuis Imperatores, Reges, Pontifices, Principes, vel Communitates..., 20 vol., first edition, 16 engraved plates, vol.1 gatherings 4O and 4N transposed, Index chronologicus in vol.10 misbound, very occasional light damp-staining to foot, occasional spotting or browning, bookplate of The Earls of Macclesfield, contemporary calf, gilt, spines gilt in compartments, spines rubbing, some straining to foot, some splitting to joints, folio, 1704-35.⁂ A handsome set. The printing of the first edition was convoluted and as such complete sets are rare at auction.
