Three interesting historical oak relic fragmentsComprising: a fragment of oak from Shakespeare’s birth place mounted in a glazed frame with a reproduction of the portrait by Droeshout from the first folio and the original paper that the fragment was wrapped in, written on the wood itself is Shakepeare’s House 1857, on the paper in which the wood was originally wrapped in is written, Autumn 1857 Stratford on Avon-piece of the beam supporting the bedroom in wh(ich) Shakespeare is said to have been born at Stratford Apl, 23, 1564 died 1616 - The house was in the hands of restorers and a labourer had driven his pick into the beam leaving this bit hanging by a fibre-23cm wide, together with ’A piece of floorboard from the Whitehead house in Southampton County in southeastern Virginia where the only successful, American Negro slave rising occurred, in August 1831 led by the infamous Nat Turner. The floorboard is stained with the blood of a victim of that rising which claimed the lives of fifty-five Whites’, 19cm wide and a bullet encased within a piece of wood inscribed, ‘Gettysburg’, 12cm wide. 1906 to 1910 Elections in Hastings and Ducross: four bronze figures by Elkington & Co depicting running newspaper boys holding a folio (originally to contain the calendar cards) and a poster being a framed silver plaque engraved with the results for the general elections of 1906 and the two of 1910 also the by-election of 1908, the octagonal bases with maker’s name, 151mm together with a framed poster of Harvey Ducross (5) * In each of these elections a member of the Ducross family was returned for Hastings for the Conservatives. In that of 1906 it was Harvey who was Chairman of the Dunlop Tyre Company. He was succeeded by his son Arthur who held the seat until 1918 and who became Life President of Dunlop. Peach's Motor Annual 1905. Published by Messer's Frank Peach & Co, a folio with 66 illustrated editorial pages, and full-page advertisements. A promotional book covering all forms of road transport, including motor launches, with alphabetical specifications, prices and delightful monochrome illustrations of named vehicles from Albion to Wolseley. With a red card cover, some damage to the spine and sticky tape, but will respond to repair.
Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith. A 1953 folio-size brochure in magnificent condition, with 12pp of well-defined images of component parts, gilt embellishments and specification text, with an opening rear pocket with a price card and five double-sided coachbuilders style cards (the James Young card is missing). Slight bumping to the lower corner. Also, a 1949 12pp, wire-spined brochure retaining its laminated card cover; a 1955 linear style 8pp book with eight style cards and a price card; 'Abridged Particulars' dating c1952, and a black laminated folder with style booklets for James Young, Mulliner, Hooper, Park Ward and specification booklet, the cover a little creased on the top corner. SIR T. FOWELL BUXTON BART. BYT THE OFFICERS NON COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF THE 2ND TOWER HAMLETS RIFLE VOLUNTEERS AS A MEMENTO OF THEIR REGARD & ESTEEM ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE COMMAND AFTER NEARLY 25 YEARS SERVICE AND SUBSEQUENTLY BECOMING THEIR HONY' COLONEL 9TH FEBY 1884, regulation hallmarked silver Gothic hilt profusely chased with acanthus scrolls and incorporating the owner's crest, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its hallmarked silver scabbard with finely chased acanthus mounts and scroll engraved to match. Educated at Harrow Sir Thomas served as Captains Commandant 1860, Major 1863, Lt. Col 1864 and Honorary Colonel 1884. Sold with a small folio of research and images.
AN EAST NORFOLK REGIMENT OF MILITIA OFFICER'S PRESENTATION SWORD, 81.5cm blade by Thurkle, profusely and finely etched with scrolling foliage, crowned VR cypher, a laurel spray, owner's crest and initials and the inscription PRESENTED TO W.M.R. HAGGARD OF WEST BRADENHAM HALL IN THE COUNTY OF NORFOLK ESQR BY HIS FELLOW PARISHIONERS AS A MARK OF ESTEEM AND AFFECTION ON THE OCCASION OF HIS JOINING THE EAST NORFOLK REGT OF MILITIA WHEN EMBODIED DECR. 27TH 1854 IN CONSEQUENCE OF THE WAR WITH RUSSIA FOR PERMAMENT AND ACTIVE SERVICE, characteristic gilt brass Gothic hilt incorporating a crowned VR cypher and profusely chased over all with oak leaves and scrolling foliage, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its steel scabbard. Sold with a folio of research and photographs. It is interesting to note that one element of the inscription mentions the sword was presented in consequence of the war with Russia, given that Haggard was born in St Petersburg in Russia.
