 JUXON WILLIAM: (1582-1663) Archbishop of Canterbury 1660-63, previously Lord High Treasurer 1636-41. Juxon was present on the scaffold when King Charles I was executed and offered the King his last rites. Ink signature on a folio piece evidently removed from a Treasury document and bearing the countersignatures of the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury Thomas Howard (1586-1646) 21st Earl of Arundel, Francis Cottington (1579-1652) 1st Baron Cottington and Francis Windebank (1582-1646) Secretary of State under Charles I. BOLIVAR SIMON: 1783-1830) Venezuelan-born Military and political leader. President of Gran Colombia 1819-30, President of Bolivia 1825 & President of Peru 1824-27. Bolivar played an important role in Latin America's successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire, and is today considered one of the most influential  politicians in the history of the Americas. D.S., Simon Bolivar, one page, folio, Lima, 2nd October 1823, in Spanish. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Lieutenant Leon Galindo to be a Colonel of Infantry. Signed by Bolivar in his capacity as 'Liberator President of the Republic of Colombia'. With a good red wax seal affixed, protected by seven flower paper petals. With blank integral leaf. The edges are very slightly irregularly trimmed, and with light some overall water staining, not affecting the legibility of the text, GLeon Galindo (1795-1865) Commander of the Bogota Battalion, 2nd Division,  who was victorious in the decisive battle of Ayacucho on December 1824, under Commander-in-Chief Antonio Jose Sucre.

CATHERINE II: (1729-1796) Empress of Russia 1762-96, known as Catherine the Great. Ink signature ('Ekaterina', in Cyrillic, somewhat faded although legible) on a large, slim oblong folio piece trimmed from the base of a larger vellum document, St. Petersburg, 8th October 1768. Countersigned at the foot by Paul I (1754-1801, Emperor of Russia 1796-1801, son of Catherine II) in his capacity as General-Admiral. The edges of the document feature attractively engraved borders incorporating various decorations and vignettes and a large blind embossed paper seal is affixed. Very slightly irregularly trimmed to the upper edge and with some light overall age wear, G

JAMAICA: A culturally historic D.S., Theobald Jaffe, one page, folio, n.p. (London), 30th November 1769. The manuscript document being an indenture for a land transaction between Theobald Jaaffe and Joseph Gasgoine at al for, 'a plantation commonly called or known by the name of Seven Plantations… lying and being in the parish of Clarendon in the Island of Jamaica… the whole containing by estimation five thousand acres and all ways, waters & watercourses…any person or persons in trust for their situate and being in the said parishes… and all houses, negroed outhouses, mill houses, boiling houses…' further annotated to verso, 'Memorandum that on this 21st day of March in the year of our Lord 1770 before me William Beckford Esq., Lord Mayor of the City of London appeared personally Theobald Taaffe and George Chandler Esq., in the within written Indenture named and did acknowledge before me that the same Indenture was their Act and Deed and the said Theobald Taaffe and George Chandler being both of full age and competent understanding all which I attest under my hand'. Signed by Beckford to the conclusion. With blind embossed paper seal affixed and red wax seal to the foot of the document. A document of good association. With age wear and light creasing. G Theobald Taffe (1708-1780) British Politician. Taffee had been described as 'an extraordinary adventurer' who once tried to offer three seats in two Cornish boroughs, Helston and Grampound, for £7,000, the fourth seat to be reserved for himself 'for his trouble in the management'. In the end the negotiations were broken off owing to Taaffe's insistence on receiving the money at once, instead of after the elections, and to his inability to furnish satisfactory security, his estates in Jamaica, worth about £3,000 a year, being vested for the payment of his debts in trustees, who allowed him £500 a year. William Beckford (1709 - 1770) British Politician, Lord Mayor of London, 1762 and 1769. Beckford's vast wealth came largely from his plantations in Jamaica and the large numbers of slaves working on these plantations.

The colour printed document being a certificate presented to Armando J. Valdes Arenas in recognition of participation in the '2do Curso Intensivo de Trabajadores Sociales'. Boldly signed in blue ink by Castro with his name alone, at the foot. With light dust toning and minor age wear. About VG

LUMLEY RICHARD: (1650-1721) 1st Earl of Scarborough. English Soldier and Statesman best known for his role in the Glorious Revolution. D.S., Scarborough, one page, oblong folio (vellum), n.p., 8th September 1702. The manuscript document appoints John Hilton as deputy Lieutenant for and in the County of Durham. Signed by Lumley in black ink to the conclusion. With dust toning to the edges and verso, and light age wear. G Provenance: The present document was previously contained in the Rawlins Collection and is illustrated in the collector's reference book Four Hundred Years of British Autographs (1970). The document was sold, as part of a lot containing other documents signed by 17th & 18th century British historical figures, by Sotheby's in their sale of the Rawlins Collection 2nd, 3rd, & 4th June 1980 (Lot 16)

LOUIS XVI: (1754-1793) King of France and Navarre 1774-1791, King of the French 1791-92. The only King of France to have been executed. D.S., Louis, as King, one page, folio, Versailles, 19th December 1786, in French. The manuscript document authorises the payment of 197,535 livres and 18 sols by the Royal Council of Finance. Signed by Louis to the conclusion and countersigned by the Count of Vergennes (1719-1787) French Statesman and Diplomat, Charles de Calonne (1734-1802) French Statesman, and Muree (?-?). Matted in cream cloth board, which features a colour decoupage to the foot depicting 'Veue du Thuilleries. A Prospect of the Royal Palace of Thuilleries'. Printed by Bowles & Carver, London. Framed and glazed in an ornate gold coloured frame to an overall size of 21 x 25. With minor age wear, otherwise about VGCharles de Calonne appears to have been a man with notable business abilities. In the crisis preceding the French Revolution, Calonne was summoned as Controller-General of Finances, a position he owed to the Comte de Vergennes. Calonne immediately set about remedying the fiscal crisis, and he found in Louis XVI enough support to create a vast and ambitious plan of revenue-raising whilst maintaining public confidence through building projects and spending. De Calonne presented the king with his plan on 20th August 1786. The present document may well have been drawn as part of that process.

POWER TYRONE: (1914-1958) American Actor. Two scrapbooks containing a good collection of vintage photographs (various sizes, many of them candid images), newspaper clippings, programmes and other printed ephemera, mostly unsigned although also including a signed card, a small 4to printed souvenir scorecard for a cricket match, Terence Rattigan’s XI vs. Sir Anthony Tichborne’s XI at Tichborne Park, 8th July 1956, signed by Power (who played for Rattigan’s XI), A.Ls.S. (2), T.Ls.S. (2) and a good signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph by Power, the collection compiled by Sue and Margot Whitworth of London during the 1950s, most of the items neatly laid down or cornermounted to the pages of the scrapbooks, and some loose items, the first oblong 4to scrapbook largely dedicated to Power’s participation in the charity cricket match and featuring newspaper reports, photographs of Power relaxing at the clubhouse, dressed in his pads alongside actor Kenneth More, signing autograph albums etc., and also including some other photographs and newspaper clippings relating to his acting career etc., the second oblong folio scrapbook largely dedicated to Power’s stage performances in The Devil’s Disciple and containing an excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of the actor in a head and shoulders pose in costume as Dick Dudgeon, signed in bold fountain pen ink across a clear area of the image, ‘Dear Margot & Sue, with all my very best – from “The Devil” himself – Tyrone Power’, photograph by Angus McBean and bearing his credit stamp to the verso, programmes for various performances at Streatham Hill Theatre, Golders Green Hippodrome, Theatre Royal Brighton etc., many candid images of Power arriving at the theatre, some alongside his car TP1, the first T.L.S., Tyrone Power, one page, 8vo, Winter Garden Theatre, London, 10th November 1956, to Miss. Sue Whitworth, thanking her for her kind letter and adding that he was delighted she enjoyed the performance, ‘….and I take this opportunity to thank you for the kind thoughts expressed in the cards I have been receiving and also for the gift of “Mr. Shaw”’, and agreeing to meet his correspondent and her sister after a future performance (accompanied by the original envelope), the second (loosely inserted) T.L.S., Tyrone, two pages, 4to, n.p. (California), 20th August 1957, to Sue and Margot Whitworth, thanking them for their news and discussing his car, TP1, ‘…just last week my sister….and I went up to Lake Arrowhead and the Gray Lady behaved herself very well. I am quite proud of her. She certainly is a traffic stopper in this part of the world’, also referring to having finished a film in Mexico and his other current work, ‘Witness [for the Prosecution] is going very well. It is, unfortunately, our last day. It has been a magnificent experience. It is most stimulating to work with Billy Wilder and the cast has been a joy. I don’t know if you know or not, but in the cast we have had Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich, Torin Thatcher, John Williams and Elsa Lanchester’ and also informing his correspondents of his travel plans to Dallas, New York and Paris which he will undertake in the coming months (accompanied by the original envelope), the first A.L.S., Tyrone Power, two pages, 8vo, Abingdon Road, London, n.d. (‘Tuesday’, 9th January 1957), to Sue and Margot Whitworth, informing them that he has just returned from ten wonderful days in Stockholm and thanking them for a Christmas gift, ‘The tray will certainly be a most welcome addition to my N.Y. apartment & will serve to remind me of your generous friendship’, also thanking them for the kindnesses to the children (accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Power) and the second A.L.S., Tyrone Power, to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting a bull fighter performing La Rebolera, n.p. (Mexico), n.d. (23rd May 1957), to Sue and Margot Whitworth, stating, in full, ‘It’s a far cry from Golders Green. Just wanted to say hello, & hope all is going well with you both. Almost finished here, then back to Paris’ etc. The collection also includes a small number of retained copies of letters to Power from the Whitworths, an 8vo notebook containing a 28 page holograph account of a meeting with Power, entitled Tea with Tyrone Power, recounting the sisters meeting the actor at the Winter Garden Theatre following a performance on 6th December 1956, a brief A.L.S. by Lynn Fontanne etc. Generally VG, Sml. WALPOLE ROBERT: (1676-1745) British Prime Minister 1721-42. D.S., R Walpole, one page, folio, n.p. (London), February 1723. The manuscript document relates to Jane, Countess of Rochester, and is a warrant to make a payment of £1000 without account to her, being one half of the annual amount due to her as granted by His Majesty 'in consideration of the loss sustained by that Family from the Fire which burnt their House at Petersham near Richmond in Surrey'. Signed by Walpole in the right margin and countersigned by Henry Pelham (1694-1754) British Prime Minister 1743-54 and George Baillie (1664-1738) Scottish Politician, Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. Signed by the Countess of Rochester and her witness individually to the verso beneath a brief manuscript note acknowledging receipt of the full payment. With a single ink line running diagonally through the text of the document. With blank integral leaf. Some light age wear and some minor creasing and a few small tears to the right border, only very slightly affecting the signatures, about VG Jane Leveson-Gower (1672-1725) Countess of Clarendon and Rochester, wife of Henry Hyde (1672-1753) 4th Earl of Clarendon and 2nd Earl of Rochester. English Nobleman and Politician.

RUSSIA: An autograph album containing three individual ink signatures by various Russian political leaders comprising Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971, First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union 1953-64; bold blue ink signature and date, 27th April 1956, in his hand), Georgy Malenkov (1901-1988, Soviet Politician & Communist Party Leader, Chairman of the Council of Ministers 1953-55; dark fountain pen ink signature and date, 30th March 1956, in his hand) and Nikolai Bulganin (1895-1975, Soviet Politician who served as Premier of the Soviet Union 1955-58 under Khrushchev; bold ink signature). Accompanied by a T.L.S. by a Secretary at the Embassy of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in London, one page, 4to, Kensington Palace Gardens, to Sydney Giles, acknowledging receipt of his letter and adding that it will be brought to the attention of Khrushchev and Bulganin's secretary when they come to London, and also including a fascinating manuscript account, unsigned, in the hand of Sydney Giles, three pages, folio, n.p. (Brighton), n.d. (March 1956), recounting in detail the experiences he had in meeting Malenkov and obtaining his signature in the present album, summarising 'I never want to go through that again, one of the worst times I've had as an autographer'. A small area of the lower right corner of the first page of the manuscript is torn away, with some loss of text, and with a few other small tears and light age wear (G), the album VG, 3

LOUIS XV: (1710-1774) King of France 1715-74. D.S., Louis, as King, at the foot, one page, folio, Versailles, 8th April 1745, in French. The manuscript document is addressed to Monsieur de la Marche in Dijon and is a warrant for him to appoint various inspectors and controllers to a council, including officers to be affiliated to the water and forestry commission. With a few neat slits to both edges, only very slightly affecting the text, but not the King’s signature, otherwise VG

 HOGARTH WILLIAM: (1697-1764) English Painter, Printmaker and Pictorial Satirist. A good, rare D.S., Wm. Hogarth, one page, folio, n.p., 13th April 1744. The partially printed document is illustrated with a fine series of caricatures of men's heads, each in profile and at the base appears a number of slightly larger caricatures, a printed caption beneath explaining '3 Characters 4 Caricatures' and adding 'For a farther explanation of the Difference Betwixt Character & Caricature see ye. Preface to Jon. Andrews'. The printed base serves as a receipt issued by Hogarth acknowledging the sum of half a guinea received from the Rt. Hon. Lord Andover, 'being the first payment for six prints called Marriage a la Mode which I promise to deliver when finish'd on Receiving half a guinea more'. Signed by Hogarth at the conclusion (his signature a little light in places although perfectly legible) alongside the remnants of a small red wax seal. Neatly mounted and with slight wear to folds. A most attractive form of Hogarth's autograph. G.   In 1743-45 Hogarth painted the six pictures of Marriage a la Mode which are now housed in the National Gallery, London. They showed a pointed skewering of upper class 18th century society and Hogarth's moralistic warning shows the miserable tragedy of an ill considered marriage for money. They are regarded by many as his finest project and certainly the best example of his serially planned short cycles. These admirable pictures were at first poorly received by the public to the great disappointment of Hogarth.   William Howard, Lord Andover (1714-1756)

A good, large D.S., Henriette Marie R, as Queen Consort, at the head, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, n.p., 7th December 1640. The manuscript document being an indenture for the lease of the manor of Rosedale, Yorkshire, to Matthew Harrowe. Countersigned at the foot by Lord Finch (1584-1660) English Judge, Speaker of the House of Commons 1628-29, Earl of Holland (1590-1649) English Courtier, Earl of Dorset (1591-1652) English Courtier, Richard Wynn (1588-1649) English Courtier, Thomas Hatton (c.1583-1658) English Politician. With fragmentary remnants from the three remaining seals, and lacking the Queen's seal. With slight traces of former mounting and a very small hole in the vellum to the upper right corner of the verso. With minor age wear. G Provenance: The present document bears the small circular label of the Rawlins Collection neatly affixed to the verso and was previously sold by Sotheby's in their sale of the Rawlins Collection 2nd, 3rd, & 4th June 1980 (Lot 88, estimate £100-150, hammer price £110, purchased by Maggs Bros.)

FREDERICK II: (1712-1786) King of Prussia 1740-86. Known as Frederick the Great and remembered for his military victories. D.S., Fr, with a flourish, three pages, folio, Berlin, 14th March 1786. The untranslated manuscript document grants a patent to the Company of the Romberg Regiment under the command of Captain Carl Friderich von Hamberger. Signed by Frederick at the conclusion. The document has undergone extensive professional restoration and is now neatly inlaid to a large folio sheet and with irregular edges to the surving parts of the original document, slightly affecting the conclusions of some words of text, but not the signature, FR

DANTON GEORGES: (1759-1794) French Politician, one of the leading figures in the early stages of the French Revolution. Danton served as the first president of the Committee of Public Safety and has been described by historians as 'the chief force in the overthrow of the French monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic'. Guillotined at the age of 34. A good, large D.S., Danton, at the foot, one page, oblong folio, Paris, 11th September 1792. The partially printed document, in French, is issued by the Department of Public Contributions in the name of the Executive Provisional Council and relates to a pension to be granted to Jean Gerard for merit, giving details of the amount he will receive and also recording the date of his birth and baptism in Paris etc. Rare. Some very light, minor overall age wear and a few small, neat tears at the edges of the folds, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG

VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland 1837-1901. D.S., Victoria R I, as Queen, at the head, one page, oblong folio, Court at Saint James's, 11th March 1895. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing C[harles] F[rederick] H[astings] Medhurst to be a Paymaster in the Army Pay Department from the 14th March 1890. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice (1845-1927) 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, British Statesman who served as Governor General of Canada 1883-88, Viceroy of India 1888-94, Secretary of State for War 1895-1900 and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1900-05. With a pale blue blind embossed seal affixed. Together with a second D.S. by both Prince George, Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904) Commander-in-Chief of the Forces 1856-95, grandson of King George III and cousin of Queen Victoria, and Gathorne Hardy (1814-1906) British Politician, Secretary of State for War 1874-78, one page, oblong folio, n.p. (London), 2nd February 1876. The partially printed document was issued under the Royal Sign Manual of Queen Victoria and is a military commission appointing Charles Frederick Hastings Medhurst to be a Sub-Lieutenant in the Land Forces with the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot from 12th February 1876. With a pale blue blind embossed seal affixed. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG, 2  Charles Frederick Hastings Medhurst was born in 1856 and rose to the rank of Major in the East Lancashire Regiment, which had merged with the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot in 1881.

KRUGER PAUL: (1825-1904) South African President 1883-1900. Kruger gained international renown as the face of Boer resistance against the British during the Second Boer War, 1899-1902. D.S., S J P Kruger, one page, folio, Pretoria, 30th August 1898. The partially printed document, in Afrikaans (untranslated), relates to Daniel Jansen van Vuren and appears to be a land registry document. Signed by Kruger at the foot. A purple rubber stamp, affecting the first two initials of Kruger's signature, indicates that the land was transferred on 20th July 1903 into the name of Vuren's wife, Maria. Very light, minor age wear, VG

CROMWELL OLIVER: (1599-1658) Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland & Ireland 1653-58. A good D.S., Oliver P, a fine, bold example as Lord Protector, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Whitehall, 28th May 1655. The manuscript document is addressed to William Clare and appoints him to be a Cornet in a Troop of Horses Captained by Peter Backhouse in the county of Stafford, and requiring him to enlist one hundred 'well afforded Persons as shall voluntarily Lift themselves' whom Clare will have charge over and diligently exercise 'good order and discipline, Commanding the inferior officers and Soulders of the said Troope to obey you as their Cornett'. With a blind embossed paper seal at the foot. Some very light overall wrinkling, two very small holes at folds in the centre of the document and a small, neat tear to a fold at the head, none of which affect the text or signature. Overall, a clean and handsome document, VG

ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. D.S., Albert, as Steward for his son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, two pages, folio, n.p., 6th May 1842. The manuscript document appoints George Freeth of Lincolns Inn Fields to be a Deputy Steward for the Duchy of Cornwall and authorises and empowers him 'to do all things belonging and appertaining to the Office of Steward....in as full and ample a manner as I myself could do if personally present at the doing thereof.....' Boldly signed by Prince Albert at the conclusion alongside a small red wax seal. With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor age wear and some slight splitting at the folds (neatly and professionally strengthened in a few places). About VG Queen Victoria had given birth to Prince Albert Edward on 9th November 1841. Being her first son, he became the Prince of Wales, Duke of Saxony and Duke of Cornwall. His father, Prince Albert, as illustrated by the present document, was Steward of the affairs of the Duchy of Cornwall until his son became of age. The young Prince would have only been six months old when his father signed the present document.

ENGLAND FOOTBALL: A small, slim oblong 8vo printed envelope sent from the Red Lion hotel in Clovelly to a lady in Broadstairs, Kent, individually signed to the plain verso by six England footballers, most of them members of the England World Cup winning squad of 1966, and many of them also associated with West Ham United, comprising Alf Ramsey, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Ron Springett and Johnny Byrne. All have signed with their names alone in bold blue inks. Together with an unsigned printed 8vo souvenir programme for the Almer Hall Benefit Match, Margate FC vs. West Ham Utd, on 11th November 1968 and a small folio sheet of facsimile signatures by a West Ham Utd team of the period including Moore, Hurst, Peters, Brooking, Redknapp, Lampard etc. A few small tears to the upper edge of the envelope where originally opened, not affecting the signatures, and some light creasing and age wear to the programme and facsimile sheet (largely affecting the latter). GORING HERMANN: (1893-1946) German Political and Military leader, a prominent member of the Nazi Party. Commander of the Luftwaffe during World War II. D.S., Herman Goring, one page, folio, Berlin, 30th January 1939, being an Award Certificate, also bearing the facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler. The partially printed document, completed in type script, being an award of the title Professor to Dr. Ernst Bastanier. With a blind embossed seal featuring the Nazi Eagle and swastika. Signed by Goring in bold black fountain pen ink to the foot. Together with a typed letter, signed by an unknown official, which accompanied the Award Certificate, sent from the office of the Police Chief in Berlin, 27th February 1939, to Dr. Ernst Bastanier, and stating, in full, 'In the attachment I present to you the certificate of assignment made by the Führer on your appointment as professor. I may at the same time express my congratulations to you.' Also including a small selection of unsigned 9 x 6½ photographs (2), a periodical, and magazine cutting, each relating to Dr. Ernst Bastanier. With a very small professional repair to the right edge of the certificate and minor age wear, otherwise VG, 6 Ernst Bastanier (1870-1953) German Homeopath, the first homeopath to hold a Chair of Homeopathy in the Berlin University where he taught from 1928-39.

The manuscript document names the Marquis de Lignovac as bailiff  of the Upper Auvergne. Signed by Louis to the conclusion and further containing several other annotations by officials to the peripheries. With a quarter remnant of the original wax seal retained. With creasing to the right and left edges, age toning and age wear. G

BREZHNEV LEONID: (1906-1982) General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union 1964-82. D.S., L Brezhnev, in Cyrillic, at the conclusion, one page, folio, n.p., 4th April 1947, on the printed letterhead of a committee, in Cyrillic. The typed document is untranslated and bears a couple of official ink stamps at the foot and a brown indelible pencil annotation in an unidentified hand across the upper half of the page. Very slightly neatly trimmed to the left edge and with a few small tears to the lower edge, none of which affect the text or signature, about VG Brezhnev worked on reconstruction projects in the Ukraine in the immediate aftermath of World War II and served as First Secretary of the Zaporizhia Regional Committee from 1946-47 and then as First Secretary of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Committee from 1947-50.

KHRUSHCHEV NIKITA: (1894-1971) Russian Leader, First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union 1953-64 and Premier of the Soviet Union 1958-64 & KAGANOVICH LAZAR: (1893-1991) Soviet Politician, one of the main associates of Joseph Stalin. D.S. by both Khrushchev and Kaganovich individually, at the conclusion, in their respective capacities as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Ukraine and Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine, three pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (1947), in Cyrillic. The typed document is addressed to Oblispolcom Tereschenko and Partyobcom Kirilenko and expresses the Council of Ministers of Ukraine’s (CMU) and Party Central Committee of Ukraine’s (PCCU) absolute dissatisfaction with the stock breading and fodder accumulation achieved following the September resolution, remarking that it is ‘absolutely perilous’ in some regions and that straw has not been stacked or stored correctly after being harvested. The document further sets out a number of demands to rectify the situation, stating that activists should be sent to each kolkhoz [a collective farm in the Soviet Union] and reports submitted, and that special attention should be paid to the corn stalks [stems], ‘All the cases when corn stalks remain on fields as well as negligence during harvesting and keeping of straw must be considered as fodder damage and those persons who are guilty must be punished immediately. Because of a lack of time, the fodder accumulation brigades personnel must be increased in order to complete the established plans’. With a few brief pencil and ink annotations in the margins and with several file holes to the left edge of each page, not affecting the text or signatures, otherwise VG Khrushchev served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR from 1944-47 and Kaganovich served as 1st Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine in 1947.

NICHOLAS II: (1868-1918) Emperor of Russia 1894-1917. Assassinated. A good D.S., Nicholas, in Cyrillic, two pages, folio, Livadia Palace, 13th November 1913, in Cyrillic. The partially printed document is addressed to [Ismael Montes] the President of the Republic of Bolivia and the Emperor acknowledges receipt of the President’s letter announcing his election and the intention to maintain good relationships between the two countries, and Nicholas II reciprocates the President’s intentions by sending assurances that he will contribute all he can to consolidate the good relations of friendship between Russia and Bolivia and concludes by offering his prayers that God will protect the President and keep him in good health. Countersigned by Sergey Sazonov (1860-1927) Russian Statesman, Foreign Minister of Russia 1910-16. Accompanied by an official French translation of the document. Some very small, minor file holes to the left edge of each document and both with small areas of paper loss to the lower left edge, only very slightly affecting one word of text and the conclusion of Sazonov’s signature, otherwise VG, 2 Ismael Montes (1861-1933) Bolivian General and President of Bolivia 1904-09 & 1913-17.

The partially printed document is a naval commission appointing First Lieutenant George Bond Puddicombe to be a Quarter Master in the Corps of Royal Marines. Countersigned at the foot by Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839) British Naval officer, Flag Captain to Admiral Lord Nelson. Hardy commanded HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, George Barrington (1794-1835) British Royal Naval officer and Politician, and John Barrow (1764-1848) British Statesman, Second Secretary to the Admiralty. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the extreme edges and vertical folds, otherwise a handsome example. VG

The partially printed document, completed in typescript, promotes various German army officers to different ranks, with effect from the 1st May 1929, listing the individual officers including von Platen, Strauss, Bulius, Haeseler, Long etc., and their new ranks within their regiments. Dresses from the Collection of Diana, Princess of Wales, A charity sale conducted by Christies..., New York, 25 June 1997, signed and numbered by Princess Diana in ink to the fly-title, colour illustrations throughout, many full-page, original purple morocco, folio (43 x 30.5cm/17 x 12ins), together with associated ephemera, comprising a private view invitation and rsvp card, a catalogue prospectus card, Admission to View card, two sale admission tickets, a paddle number registration folding card and bidding paddle (number 15), and printed Auction Results sheet and accompanying letter, housed together in a custom-made red cloth solander box, with gilt lettered red morocco label on spine, spine and part of covers faded Limited edition, 3/250 copies, signed and numbered by Princess Diana. The earliest available printing of this iconic catalogue, the first two of the 250 copies printed being retained by the Royal Family, and with the addition of ephemeral items associated with the sale. Signed by Diana just weeks before her death, this sumptuous catalogue was produced to accompany the sensational sale of 79 dresses which were surplus to the Princess's requirements. The mostly elaborately embellished formal gowns and dresses had been part of her working wardrobe during her marriage, and the idea to sell them for charity came from her eldest son, Prince William. The auction in New York was one of the biggest social events of the year, raising $3.26 million for various AIDS and health-related charities. The highlight of the sale was Princess Diana's off-the shoulder, midnight-blue velvet dress designed by Victor Edelstein, famously worn during a dance with John Travolta at the White House in 1985, which fetched $222,500.
