MONCK, George, 1st Duke of Albemarle ... Document signed, Ms. One page, folio, 17th Aug, 1660 appointing Francis [Newport], Lord Newport to be governor of Ludlow castle.* General Monck was a major military presence from the beginning of the Civil War, whose crucial position as C in C of the parliamentary forces from November 24th, 1659 enabled Charles 11 to return to the monarchy.
MASSIE, Sir Edward ... A manuscript commission believed to be in the hand of and signed by Sir Edward Massie: Folio with integral blank, Whitehall 12th December, 1660.* In a four-line addition Massie attests to its being a copy of the original appointment. After a long career with the Parliamentarians he changed sides. Seriously wounded at Worcester, he was subsequently arrested and imprisoned in the Tower but managed to escape. In 1660 he was active in preparing for Charles' return and was rewarded with a knighthood.
