Raphael's Lodges [so-titled on spine], [Paris, 1825], fifty-two single-page lithos. by Gottfried Engelmann after Raphael's Vatican frescos, tissue guards, wide margins, occn. foxing, contemp. roan-backed cloth, spine worn with loss at head, covers faded and damp-mottled, folio Unusual English issue published by W.A. Read in conjunction with H.C. de Courval, with oval embossed stamp to lower margin of each plate. Engelmann (1788-1839) introduced lithography to France in 1814, having learned the technique in Munich from its inventor Senefelder. Englemann, in collaboration with his son, invented chromolithography in 1837. The engravings that comprise this important work are amongst the first lithographies of the history of art and are the first French lithographies to illustrate the Bible. (1)
