You cannot see the house from the road but the splendid woods mark the spot where it stands. The Church is within view & is very beautiful. 2 Miles further is Sir James Scarlett’s an old fashioned large fronted house but standing in a very pretty spot & with a large garden attached. Another mile brings the village of Shere at one end of which fronting the road stands Mr Bray’s house which has been built 150 years so that it is one of the old fashioned comfortable mansions with two wings...’ Thorp then describes the interior of the house in detail and the way of life which Bray and his family enjoy – then he describes Bray himself who by this time was 91 years old ! Bray was one of the leading antiquaries of his day and is known for his works on Evelyn and also the three volume ‘History and Antiquities of Surrey’ which he published between 1804 and 1814 and which form the basis for historians of the county to this day.
