Document signed dated October 1 1588 1pp. folio affirming the assessed rate of £5 in fee to Thomas Norris one of the Messengers of Her Majesty’s Chamber signed by Hunsdon and Sir Thomas Heneage Vice Chamberlain fragment of seal one or two tiny holes at the flourishes of Heneage’s signature. Hunsdon’s whose power had initially been enhanced by victory at Naworth in 1570 was then active as courtier and administrator became Privy Councillor and was appointed as Lord Chamberlain in 1585. The office gave him an even more significant strategic political role since it was to him that petitions for audience to the Queen must turn.

Castell (Robert) The Villas of the Ancients Illustrated, first trade edition, large paper copy, 13 engraved plates and plans, 9 double-page, engraved head- & tail-pieces and 5 illustrations in text, without the list of subscribers as issued, title lightly foxed, occasional light spotting or soiling, one leaf with short tear at lower margin, original boards, uncut, worn, spine defective, folio, for the author, 1728. *** Castell was jailed in Fleet Prison as a debtor on 18 June 1728. Three months later the prison governor, Thomas Bambridge, moved him under protest to a sponging house where there was a case of smallpox, which he contracted and from which he died before the end of the same year. As a result of this and other cases of abuse a House of Commons committee was set up to investigate the current state of prisons. Their report, delivered to the House on 20 March 1729 included details of Castell`s death, and as a result Bambridge was charged with murder. He was tried and acquitted; Castell`s widow lodged an appeal and Bambridge was re-tried and once more acquitted. The Villas of the Ancients was published in July 1729, making the most of the publicity Castell was receiving from his widow`s appeal.
