Shakespeare (William) Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies, [edited by Edward Capell], 10 vol., upper margin to first two leaves of vol. 1 repaired, 19th century red morocco, gilt, g.e., very slightly rubbed but a handsome set overall, 8vo, for J. & R.Tonson, 1767.⁂The first edition edited by Capell, the first person to work up a wholly new edition from all the quarto & folio editions (Johnson had largely followed Pope's edition, who in turn had utilised Rowe's edition derived from the fourth folio). Despite such scholarly and noble ambitions, Johnson said of Capell's preface "if the man would have come to me, I would have endeavoured to endow his purposes with words; for as it is, he doth gabble monstrously."
