Paine (James) Plans, Elevations and Sections, of Noblemen and Gentlemen's Houses, and also of Stabling, Bridges...Temples, and other Garden Buildings; executed in the counties of Derby, Durham, Middlesex, Northumberland, Nottingham, and York, Part I only (of 2), first edition, list of subscribers, 55 engraved plates numbered 1-74, 19 double-page, one also folding, title a little soiled, some light browning and occasional foxing, contemporary half calf, rubbed, rebacked, corners repaired, spine a little faded, [Fowler 207; Harris 664; Millard II 50], folio, for the Author, 1767.⁂Featuring designs for completed buildings, mostly in the Palladian style, including Sandbeck, Axwell Park and the magnificent stables at Chatsworth. A further volume covering Nottingham, Essex, Wilts, Derby, Hertford, Suffolk, Salop, Middlesex and Surrey was published in 1783.

Clarke. Archt. for Mr Britton [John Britton, see provenance]', with an additional watercolour by R. Kitton of a church monument within the same church, and another of Wheatsheaf Inn, Tewkesbury, inscribed 'J.R. Thompson from a study by J. Britton', watercolours over graphite, various inscriptions, sizes from 40 x 105 mm. (1 1/2 x 4 1/4 x in) to 235 x 130 mm. Canon Law.- [Laurentius Puldericus (clericus Neapolitanus)] [Breviarum decreti], manuscript in Latin, on paper, 105pp., between 49-53 lines, in brown ink, in a cursive continental bookhand,some sidenotes, a few in another contemporary hand, later endpapers, 19th century boards, edges rubbed, folio, [?Germany], [c. 1450].⁂ A version of Gratian's Decretals, the great corpus of ecclesiastical law, partially based on Roman law, with additions from the Church fathers.Johannes Gratian was born probably at Chiusi, in Tuscany. He became a monk and taught at Bologna in the monastery of SS. Felix and Nabor. He compiled the Decretum in c. 1140, shortly after the Second Lateran Council held in that year. Gratian died before the Third Lateran Council (1179).

Paine (James) Plans, Elevations, Sections, and other Ornaments of the Mansion-House, belonging to the Corporation of Donacaster, first edition, engraved title-vignette incorporating portrait of the architect by Grignion after Hayman, 17 engraved plates numbered 1-21, 4 double-page, title with contemporary ink signature "Rich Allanson" at head, contemporary ink inscription "John S.Wright's Book" on front free endpaper and with his ink stamp to title, some light soiling or foxing, mostly at beginning and end, contemporary reverse calf, rubbed, rebacked, repairs to corners and edges, [Harris 668], folio, for the Author, 1751.⁂ Paine was appointed Clerk of Works at Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, in 1737 when he was only nineteen years old and he continued to supervise the building there until 1750, but Doncaster Mansion House was his first major project, from 1745-48.
