The grandeur, beauty and romance of the English Lakes is perfectly captured by Pyne's illustrations.

Lacauchie, heightened with gum arabic, plate-guards, browning to text and endpapers, original pictorial cloth with decoration in gilt, green, red and blue, sunning to spine and margins, spine ends repaired, g.e., [Bobins 1218; Gumuchian 900; Not in Colas], folio, Paris, Martinet, [c.1845].⁂ Showing the regional dress of various peoples including Native American, Chinese, Mexican, Russian, Turkish, Spanish and Scottish.

[Goddard (T.)] The Military Costume of Europe, 2 vol., first edition, 96 hand-coloured engraved plates, some light offsetting and foxing, handsome contemporary olive green straight-grain morocco, stamped in gilt and blind, g.e., a little rubbed, [Tooley 236; Bobins 353], folio, T. Goddard and J. Booth, 1812.⁂ A handsome set. The Bobins catalogue states that this copy has plate 9 in duplicate (making a total of 97 plates), but the duplicate has either been removed or the counting was erroneous.Provenance: Viscount Boyne (bookplate).

Smith (Charles Lorraine) [The Pychely Hunt], the complete set of 8 hand-coloured aquatints by Jukes after Smith, each trimmed and mounted, captions present (though occasionally just trimmed) but without imprints, some light spotting, later green straight-grain morocco, gilt, by Zaehnsdorf (1902), [Bobins 1401; Schwerdt III, p.89], oblong folio, [H. Humphrey, 1791].⁂ Very rare complete set of what Siltzer says are the only prints to depict the Pytchley Hunt. "Charles Lorraine Smith ... was himself a great hunter and a friend of the famous Hugo Meynell. He was also an amateur artist and his pictures show the result of the happy combination of his hunting experience and artistic temperament" (Schwerdt). "Dick Knight was huntsman to Lord Spencer, the Master of the Pytchely, during whose mastership there was great rivalry between the followers of the Pytchely and those of the Quorn hunts. Dick Knight's feat was the result of a wager that he would be beaten that day by one of the Quornites, and Plate 3 [here bound as plate 6] "Now Contract ..." shows how he got over an apparently unjumpable place, where the Quornites failed to follow him. To achieve his end he had to ride three different horses, the last one being the leader of a ploughing team"(Schwerdt).The last copy at auction was the Schwerdt-Duke of Gloucester copy in 2006 (£16,000).Provenance: Clarence S. Verzameling van Verschillende Gekleede Mans- en Vrouwen-Standen..., first collected edition, engraved title-vignette by H.Kobell and 33 finely hand-coloured plates by Sallieth after Jakob Perkois and Johannes Huibert Prins, most stipple-engraved, one or two with aquatint, contemporary ink manuscript note of acquisition "acheté 20fr. le 28 Juillet [?]1825" to rear pastedown, a superb clean copy in contemporary glazed blue boards with decorative gilt roll border, slightly rubbed and marked, rebacked, small tear to spine, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, morocco label to spine, [Bobins 429; Colas 2311; Landwehr, Dutch Books with Coloured Plates 389], folio, Rotterdam, J.Immerzeel, Jr., 1818.⁂ Rare coloured first edition of this artist's manual depicting street vendors and other workers, by Perkois (1756-1804), a teacher from the Drawing Academy in Middleburg, and Prins (1757-1806), secretary of the art society Pictura in The Hague. The engraver, Sallieth (1749-91), from Rotterdam, is known mostly for his maritime views. A few copies have appeared at auction but mostly of the later 1833 edition and all uncoloured, as is the only copy listed on Library Hub (V & A).

Ackermann, Jun., [1829].⁂ A fine copy of what Schwerdt calls "one of Alken's most charming sets of its kind. The style of drawing is very minute and the colouring exquisite."Provenance: Joel Spitz (bookplate, this no.458 in his collection).

Ackermann, 1836.⁂ A delightful series, scarce and rarely seen at auction.

Stackelberg (Otto Magnus von) Costumes et Usages des Peuples de la Grece Moderne, first edition, engraved title and 30 hand-coloured engraved plates, occasional spotting, original red cloth, stamped in blind and lettered in gilt, rebacked in red morocco, corners worn, covers a little stained, [see Blackmer 1591 note; Bobins 164 (erroneously calling for 40 plates)], small folio, Rome, 1825.⁂ The rare first edition with engraved plates rather than the lithographed versions which appeared in contemporaneous pirated copies. "The plates of costumes constitute Stackelberg's first published work on Greece, where he travelled from 1810-14. He was in Athens with Byron and travelled and worked with Cockerell, Haller von Hallerstein, Gropius, Linckh...and Foster in excavating various archaeological sites, particularly Bassae." (Bobins).Provenance: P.G. Skinos (bookplate).

Provenance: Marshall Field's, Chicago (pencil inscription dated 10/1/30); Maxine and Joel Spitz (bookplate and ink stamp, sold their sale, Christie's, 27th May, 2015, lot 85).

Sachse & Co., 1843-45.⁂ Rare first and only edition of this attractive series of plates depicting the uniforms and arms of the Prussian army.

Mestchersky's Vues d'Espagne], list of plates in Russian, French and English, 35 fine chromolithographed plates, each c. 480 x 350mm., all mounted on heavy paper, modern morocco-backed boards, spine gilt, [Bobins 1687], large folio, Moscow [but Berlin], Storch & Kramer, [1867].⁂ A superb series of views taken from a tour around Spain taken by Eibner and Mestchersky in 1860-61, generally regarded as Eibner's finest work. Rare, we can trace no other complete series at auction.

MANUSCRITO.- PONTE DE LIMA.- [Traslado do foral manuelino de Terra de S. Martinho e Burral do Lima].- Século XVII (1624).- [26] f.; 28 cm., Authentic copy of the Manueline charter of Terra de S. Martinho and Burral de Lima (today Beiral do Lima), originally granted on May 1, 1515. The two settlements, located on the left bank of the river Lima, are today part, respectively, of the municipalities of Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima. On the front of the first folio, the first three lines bear the following title: «Treslado do foral da Villa de ponte de Lima e seu termo E primeiramente se segue a tauoada delle Tauoada da terra de são martinho e Regemguos dela». This title was added by the notary responsible for the copy and does not appear in the original manuscript of the charter, which is today in the Municipal Archive of Ponte de Lima. At the end of the transfer (fol. 27v), it includes a registration certificate with an autograph signature by the notary Francisco Rebelo de Sá and the signature of a second notary who verified the fidelity of the copy with the original. Paper section, sewn to the thread, with 34 sheets (eight blank); some moisture (tidal) stains and deep wormholes confined to outer margin. Transcription (of the charter) apparently in one hand, in linked cursive Gothic handwriting, fully legible. Certificate dated June 30, 1624., Dim. - 28 cm

CHARLES KINGSLEY (1819-1875) A FOLIO OF CARIACTURE DRAWINGS, along with an envelope addressed to Mr Kingsley in Biarritz from Spain, two botanical pressings of seaweed, masonic interest rules, receipt, church letters and more.The caricatures have strong social-political symbolism. Charles Kingsley was anti-slavery, and wrote at lengths on the subject. One of the caricatures in this lot perhaps depicts an African American man, with the caption below 'the gentleman who has been discovered to be as good as a yankee'.
