Lot 936

BYNG JOHN: (1704-1757) British Admiral, remembered for the loss of Minorca in 1756 at the beginning of the Seven Years` War. Byng was court-martialled and found guilty of failing to `do his utmost` to prevent Minorca falling to the French following the Battle of Minorca. He was sentenced to death and shot by firing squad on 14th March 1757. Rare D.S., J Byng, one page, folio, Port Mahon, 5th February 1734/5. The manuscript document is a demand from the Gunners Stores on board HMS Falmouth for various supplies including sheets of cartridge paper and musquet rods. Lightly mounted above a small printed description from an old autograph catalogue, the document also annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand at the base, `the rarest English naval autograph`. HOWE RICHARD: (1726-1799) 1st Earl Howe. British Admiral of the Fleet, noted for his service during the American War of Independence and French Revolutionary Wars. L.S., Howe, one page, folio, The Charlotte, Torbay, 21st August 1793, to Commissioner [Robert] Fanshawe at Plymouth. Howe informs his correspondent `The Royal George not having been able to have her Hammock Cloths painted before the Ship sailed from Portsmouth, I am to request that you will be pleased to give directions for their being painted at Plymouth, and when dry, reserved until there may be an opportunity of conveying them to that Ship.` In a postscript the Admiral adds that the Hammock Cloths will be sent by the Orestes or `such other Ship as may be appointed to convoy the Victuallers back to Plymouth`. DUCKWORTH JOHN THOMAS: (1747-1817) British Admiral, served during the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. D.S., John Thos. Duckworth, one page, folio, n.p., 2nd June 1794. The partially printed document relates to George Graham, an Able Seaman of 28 years of age, discharged from HMS Orion as a result of being killed in action on 1st June 1794. The discharge is addressed to the Treasurer of His Majesty`s Navy and is signed by Duckworth in his capacity as Captain of HMS Orion. Countersigned by the ship`s Master, Purser and Boatswain and with three further countersignatures at the foot and various official ink annotations in the left margin. Two areas of the document have been neatly excised and the whole has been laid down. Some light overall age wear, G George Graham, Captain of the 4th Gun on board HMS Orion, was one of the victims of The Glorious First of June of 1794, the first and largest fleet action of the naval conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the First French Republic during the French Revolutionary Wars.

COLPOYS JOHN: (c.1742-1821) British Admiral. L.S., Jno. Colpoys, one page, folio, on board HMS London at sea, 29th October 1796, to H. D. Darby, Captain of HMS Bellerophon. The manuscript letter requires Darby to place himself under Colpoy`s command `and follow all such Orders as you may from time to time receive from me for His Majesty`s Service` following directions from the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty. Countersigned at the foot by John Scott (d.1805) Royal Navy Warrant Officer, a friend and confidant to Nelson who served as his secretary in HMS Victory. Scott was present at the Battle of Trafalgar during which he was killed in the opening exchanges. VG

[NELSON HORATIO]: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. A highly unusual D.S. by Izzet Mehmed Pasha, Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, one page, large folio, 29th July 1798, issued to Lord Nelson by the Grand Vizier on the orders of Selim III, Sultan of Turkey, and bearing his seal. A contemporary docket to the verso, in English, provides a summary of the Ottoman Turkish document, in part, `Mandate (in epistolary form) from the Supreme Vezir addressed to all Pashas on the coasts and in the Islands of the White Sea….recommending the English Fleet to a most friendly reception and to being readily supplied with provisions, water and other necessaries at the current prices, directing on the other hand that if any French ships appear, the latter are….to be refused admittance and driven off. 29th July 1798* This document issued at the instance of Mr. Smith, H.M`s Charge d`Affaires at Constantinople and by him transmitted to Rear Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson. *NB The Battle of the Nile 1st August 1798`. A couple of small holes at the intersection of some folds, G The Battle of the Nile was a major naval battle fought between British and French fleets at Aboukir Bay on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt from 1st-3rd August 1798. The battle was the climax of a naval campaign that had ranged across the Mediterranean during the previous three months, as a large French convoy sailed from Toulon to Alexandria, carrying an expeditionary force under Napoleon Bonaparte. The French were defeated by the British forces led by Sir Horatio Nelson.

CADIR BEY (d.1804) Turkish High Admiral, a favourite of Sultan Selim III. Manuscript Letter, most likely in the hand of a secretary, signed with Cadir Bey`s small Arabic seal at the conclusion, two pages, small folio, Alexandria, 23rd July 1802, to Lord Nelson, in French. The Admiral remarks that his last five letters to Nelson have gone unanswered although continues to enquire about the health of Nelson and his officers. With blank integral leaf. VG

CODRINGTON EDWARD: (1770-1851) British Admiral, a hero of the Battle of Trafalgar where he captained HMS Orion. A.L.S., Edwd. Codrington, one page, folio, 43 Charles Street, Berkeley Square, 16th June 1813, to George Harrison of the Treasury. Codrington informs his correspondent that `I brought to England in the Blake a cask of wine and a slab of marble directed for Mrs. Pellew, Plymouth, which I sent to the Custom House at Portsmouth in consequence of the Blake being paid off` and continues to request that Harrison gives directions that the wine and marble be permitted to be re-shipped and landed at the Custom House at Plymouth. VILLENEUVE PIERRE-CHARLES: (1763-1806) French Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, commanded the French and Spanish Fleets defeated by Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. A.L.S., Villeneuve, one page, folio, Paris, 8 Vendemiaire Year 12 (1st October 1803), to Citizen Minister, in French. Villeneuve requests the authorisation of an advance payment of 3000 francs and safe passage for his travel to Rochefort, `from Valensolles, Basses Alpes, the place where I received the order to betake myself to this destination` and concludes `I shall then set out on Monday evening without further delay.` In the left margin Louis-Alexandre Berthier has approved the payment, adding his initials beneath. At the base of the letter appear some official manuscript calculations of the distances involved in the various stages of the journey, and of travel expenses. [NELSON HORATIO]: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. An interesting nine page folio manuscript letter in French outlining the preparations and considerations for 1805 planned Napoleonic invasion of England by the Boulogne Flotilla. Referring to various past naval failures due to lack of organization and backing, it sets out the details for supplies and men. It also covers consideration on how to raise the moral of the sailors and hence increase the chance of successful enlistment, advocating a maritime advisory council to Decres Naval Ministry. Some wear to edge of the pages, FR.

CARACCIOLO FRANCESCO: (1752-1799) Neapolitan Admiral and Revolutionist. Caracciolo was the subject of a Court Martial on board Nelson`s flagship HMS Foudroyant where he was charged with high treason and condemned to death. D.S., Fran:co Caracciolo, two pages, folio, Fasano, Martina and Mottola, 18th & 24th November 1724. The manuscript document, in Italian and Latin, begins with the supplication of Giovanni Majollare of Arborebello and states, in part, `about the 10th of the present November 1724, when the Country Wardens of Your Excellency`s house came unexpectedly….finding the suppliant with certain acorns and fruit, the property of the same Your Excellency`s house, collected in the cottage, they by way of penalty took captive two ploughing oxen, and brought them here to the Tower at Martina. And because….the suppliant is a poor day-labourer and in need, and the theft of the produce short lived, he begs you in charity….to be pleased to show him mercy, meanwhile may God show him likewise.` With Majollare`s mark at the conclusion and the signatures of three witnesses, attested in Latin at Fasano by the notary Pietro Antonio Mileti with his device. Caracciolo`s pardon follows, `We remit the penalty incurred by the suppliant, and accordingly the Court at Mottola is to restore the animals free to him, saving the rights of the Wardens and of this Court….` Boldly signed by Caracciolo and countersigned by Cippoluni. With a good armorial paper seal with shaped fold-downs affixed. The lower half of the second page features a record of the document`s production before the Deputy Master at Mottola who ordered the animals to be returned. With blank integral leaf. A small area of paper loss to the upper inner margin not affecting the text or signatures. VG

HAMILTON EMMA: (1765-1815) Wife of Sir William Hamilton and mistress of Lord Nelson. A signed folio edition of Musical Relicks of the Welsh Bards…. by Edward Jones, Second Part containing the Music of the First Volume, Second Edition, printed for the author, London, 1800. Bearing Emma Hamilton`s ownership signature (`Emma Hamilton`, a large example) and date, 1805, in her hand at the head of the title page. Incomplete and disbound. About G Provenance: Originally part of the Ray Rawlins Collection of Historical Documents and bearing his small circular sticker. Sold as part of the Rawlin`s Collection by Sotheby`s, 4th June 1980 (Lot 837, Estimate £40-60).

HAMILTON EMMA: (1765-1815) Wife of Sir William Hamilton and mistress of Lord Nelson. Good D.S., Emma Hamilton, twice, one page, folio, n.p. (London), 14th May 1811. The partially printed document is addressed to Thomas Dixon and William Leake, Attorneys of His Majesty`s Court of Kings Bench at Westminster, and is a Warrant of Attorney authorising them to appear on Hamilton`s behalf in an action for a debt of £600. Signed by Hamilton at the foot alongside a red wax seal and again signed in the left margin beneath the manuscript text `This Warrant of Attorney is given to secure the payment of two Bills of Exchange for One hundred and Fifty pounds each dated the thirteenth and fourteenth days of May instant drawn by Carlo Revedino upon the said Lady Hamilton at two months after date.` With blank integral leaf. VG Two years after the present document was signed, in the summer of 1813, Emma Hamilton was arrested for debt and consigned to the Kings Bench prison where she remained for a year with her daughter Horatia.

[HAMILTON EMMA]: (1765-1815) Wife of Sir William Hamilton and mistress of Lord Nelson. A.L.S. by Eliza Graefer, widow of the botanist John Graefer, two pages, folio, Bronte, 27th August 1809, to Lady Hamilton. Graefer states that she hopes her correspondent has received her packet of letters providing `the exact state of the Dutchy (sic) of Bronte` and further commenting on her health, `the Docters (sic) as (sic) ordered me Viper Broth…I am afraid I am on my last leggs (sic) but my Dr. Lady Hamilton we must all die of some Disorder, & if this is to be my Death, I must resign myself to the will of the almighty….but let me beg it as a favor you will not acquaint any one that I am so ill, particularly my Uncle, not even if you was to hear of my being Dead, for he woud (sic) be capable of altering his Will & not think of my Dr. Caroline` as well as mutual acquaintances, the possibility of obtaining a pension from the Queen (`but can I expect justice from the Court of Palermo. I don`t like to tell you my reasons, but don`t write to her any more, she`s an ungratefull wretch`) and also enquiring about Horatia, `now I long to know how your dear Horatia comes on in her Education, wether (sic) she is good & loves her Dr. Mother & Grandmother if she is pray give her a thousand kisses for me` Lightly mounted at the left edge of the integral leaf to a slightly larger sheet, a pencil annotation in an unidentified hand indicating that the letter may have been previously contained in the Alfred Morrison collection. NELSON HORATIO: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. A very fine, rare D.S., Nelson & Bronte, one page, folio, given on board HMS Victory, 10th June 1804. The attractively penned manuscript document is addressed to Sir Richard Bickerton, Rear Admiral of the White, on board the Royal Sovereign, and is headed Order of Battle and of Sailing. The document outlines Nelson’s plans for the formation of ships for the Blockade of Toulon, listing eleven vessels including the Victory, Superb, Renown, Triumph and Bickerton’s own Royal Sovereign, along with the names of the Captains of each ship including Nelson himself. The list of ships are split into three sections, Van Squadron, Centre Squadron and Rear Squadron. Boldly signed by Nelson at the foot. With blank integral leaf. A later, small red ink stamp appears in the upper right corner. The text is illegible although is presumably that of a collector. Some slight discoloration to the extreme edges of the document, caused by previous framing, not affecting the text or signature. VG

The manuscript letter seeks clarification of the claims made by a labourer working for the King and states, in full, `Wee have seene your certification at yr. bottome of a peticon of Danl. Bowtroolls the Kings MarCaulker at Chatham, and having good reason to doubt that his pretence to yr. Joyners house is grounded upon a designe of yr. late Joyners to prejudice him that who succeede him. Wee desire you to informe us what you can learne touching yr. grounds of yr. said Joyner no earlyer declaring yr. Caulkers right to his house.` Countersigned by three Commissioners of the Navy, William Brouncker, 2nd Viscount Brouncker (1620-1684) English Mathematician, first President of the Royal Society, Sir John Mennes (1599-1671) English Vice Admiral, Controller of the Navy and Colonel Thomas Middleton (d.1672) Surveyor of the Navy 1667-72. Some very light, minor overall foxing and some slight chipping to the left edge. About VG The letter dates from the period of Pepys` Diaries and as such is scarce and desirable. Indeed, Pepys makes references to the three countersignatories in his diaries, expressing his disgust at Brouncker for living out of wedlock with the actress Abigail Williams and describing Mennes as being `ill at ease` in his role as a Commissioner of the Navy.
