Six volumes (330x263 mm). [2], 183, [5]; [2], 189, [3]; [2], 182, [4]; [2], 204, [12]; [2], 188, [8]; [2], 193, [9] pages. With 100 woodcut stamped in colour, after Salvador Dalì. Original publisher's binding. Untrimmed loose leaves contained in original cloth-covered boards, and slipcases decorated with abstract motifs with different colouring (Inferno gold and red, Purgatory in purple, Paradise in blue). An excellent copy, no. 3614 on vélin pur chiffon de Rives. The first edition of the celebrated deluxe Commedia illustrated by the Catalan artist Salvador Dalí. (1904-1989). The publication was first commissioned to him by the Italian government in 1950, in celebration of the 700th anniversary of Dante's birth. Between 1951 and 1960 Dalí created a set of 101 watercolours, which however was not considered appropriate for a publication financed by the Italian State. These watercolours were finally exhibited in Paris in 1960, at the Musée Galliera, and then issued by the publisher Les Heures Claires. The 'Maestro Stampatore' Raymond Jacquet spent five years for cutting the ca. 3,500 woodblocks necessary for transfer Dalí's watercolours to engravings in thirty-five different colours. These woodblocks were destroyed after the printing. The Commedia is generally considered the most relevant and impressive graphic work realized by Dalí.

CHOISEUL-GOUFFIER, Marie Gabriel August Florent. Voyage pittoresque de la Grece.Paris, [J.J. Blaise], 1782-1809-1824. Very good example of the first edition of one of the most celebrated Voyages pittoresques. Choiseul-Gouffier's masterpiece is the first publication of a travel voyage that is composed mainly of illustrations of places which are complementary to a narrative and descriptive text. This work established the model for later "Voyages pittoresques" not only in format but also by the employment of different artists. Notable artists used in this work include Saint-Aubin and Moreau le Jeune. Volume 1 contains a discourse on Greek history and the struggle for liberty. Primarily, though, it is an account of the author's travels through Greece and is heavily illustrated with maps, views of natural wonders and classical ruins. The first part of the second volume is a reconstruction of the Troad, that area of the Mediterranean associated with the "Iliad". It reflects the author's reduced circumstances and is sparsely illustrated. The second part, published after Choiseul-Gouffier's death by his friends from notes left by him, is a much more luxurious effort, probably as the result of subsidy, and is again heavily illustrated. First edition, third issue of first volume, 2 volumes in 3, large folio. Portrait, 3 engraved titles, 2 maps, 285 engraved plates, table, contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, vellum tips, rebacked, scattered light foxing, a very good set. HOWARD, Luke. Essay on the Modification of Clouds.London, John Churchill and Sons, 1865 The 'student of clouds' or 'father of meteorology' Luke Howard (1772-1864) was by profession an industrial chemist, but his great interest in meteorology led to his studies on clouds, and his devising of the system of Latin cloud names which was adopted internationally and is still in use. He introduced the three basic cloud names: cirus, cumulus and stratus. As a young man Luke Howard was one of a circle who in March, 1796, formed themselves into an Association called the Askesian Society, for the discussion of scientific questions. Among the Members were William Allen, William Phillips, Alexander Tilloch, and H. Pepys. The Society was merged into the Geological Society in 1806. He possessed a registering clock by which the variations of the barometer were recorded on the outer portion of the dial, which made one revolution in the twelve months. These diagrams were afterwards published, at great expense, under the name of Barometrographia. In Barometrographia, he noted down the atmospheric pressure readings from 1815 to 1834 at his homes in Tottenham, London, and Ackworth, Yorkshire, alongside accounts of the weather. "Howard's contributions to meteorology over half a century were profound. He had not limited himself to clouds but had looked at radiation, urban heat islands and wind flow. Fifty years before, at a lecture in Tottenham, he had even suggested that the rotation of the earth might deflect winds off course. He had explained to an audience that as the air travels north or south the earth is forever 'slipping away under it'." Peter Moore, The Weather Experiment, Chatto and Windus, 2015. Alfred Waterhouse was an English architect, famous in particular for designing the Natural History Museum of London. Willughby, Francis; John Ray (ed.). Ornithologiæ libri tres.London, John Martyn, 1676 "Ornithologiæ libri tres (referred to as the Ornithology) is one of the first truly scientific ornithological texts. It was published four years after the death of Francis Willughby (1635-1672) by his friend and collaborator John Ray (1627-1705). These two natural historians had met at Trinity College Cambridge in the 1650s and spent time travelling around Britain and Europe collecting and observing nature. Previous works concerning birds typically contained information gleaned from earlier sources such as Aristotle and Pliny with extra comments by the author. These works would usually describe the birds, where they might be found, whether they were edible, if they had any medicinal value, and what their human traits and characteristics were (for example Wrens are viewed as brave while Finches are dim-witted). It was also not uncommon to find mythical and fabled birds such as the phoenix and griffin amongst the pages of such works. As the study of natural history progressed the standards of ornithological works improved but they still lacked sensible and coherent organisation. Birds tended to be grouped together by habitat and then by their actions. Walter Charleton's (1619-1707) system, explained in his Onomasticon zoicon (London, 1668), involved looking at the birds' diets, whether they bathed (and in what water/sand) or sang. The way birds were ordered changed with the publication of the Ornithology. Firstly, they are classed here as land or water birds. The land birds are then divided into those with crooked beaks and claws and then those with straight beaks. The water birds are divided into those 'that wade in the waters, or frequent watery places, but swim not; The second, such as are of a middle nature between swimmers and waders, or rather that partake of both kinds, some whereof are cloven-footed, and yet swim; others whole-footed, but yet very long-leg'd like the waders: The third is of whole-footed, or fin-toed Birds, that swim in the water'. This is thought to be the first attempt to rationally classify birds. The 77 illustrations contained in the Ornithology come from various sources. Some are copies made from the collection of pictures and specimens owned by Willughby, others Ray had commissioned. The quality of the illustrations varies greatly; some are very lifelike and easily identified while others are not. Many of the birds have unusual postures for their species while those drawn from specimens (dead or alive) tend to be the more accurate. Ray himself puts the lack of quality down to the fact that he was unable to fully oversee the engravers' work as he was away from London and had to send instructions by letter. The illustrations credited to Thomas Browne (1605-1682) are of the best quality. These are thought to include the illustrations of the Shearwater, Little Auk, Razorbill, and Great Northern Diver" (Dawn Moutrey, University of Cambridge, Whipple Library). First edition. Folio (36.3 x 22.5 cm.), 2 folding letterpress tables, 77 engraved plates, lacking initial imprimatur leaf, browning to text leaves, title-leaf slightly frayed at fore-edge and with very small hole in centre, three plates with tears repaired, later vellum with arms tooled in blind on covers, a good example. Provenance: Sacchetti, armorial bookplate and stamp on title-page. Anker 532 (variant); Nissen IVB 991; Wing W2879 (with title-page variant recorded as ESTC R471002).
