Marca tipografica xilografica al verso dell'ultima carta. Frontespizio inquadrato da elaborata cornice architettonica con la rappresentazione di personaggi mitologici e delle condizioni umane. Testo alle cc. Aa1v e Aa2r inquadrato da cornici xilografiche, rispettivamente decorate con le personificazioni delle virtù cardinali e con motivi antropomorfi e vegetali. Incipit del Nuovo Testamento incorniciato da elaborata bordura xilografica con sottoscrizione dello stampatore entro scudo. Capilettera e testatine xilografici animati e ornati. Grande vignetta xilografica alla c. Ii1v raffigurante l'ascensione di Cristo in cielo, più piccola al recto della c. Ii2. Tavole dei Canoni xilografiche a piena pagina, impresse alle cc. Ii3r-Ii6v. Buon esemplare, gore al magine superiore ed esterno delle prime carte, fioriture, uniformi bruniture, restauro al margine inferiore della carta Aa1, con conseguente piccola mancanza alla bordura al verso, angolo inferiore esterno dell'ultima carta risarcito. Legatura secentesca in pergamena su piatti in cartone, dorso a cinque nervi, titolo impresso in oro al secondo scomparto su tassello in marocchino nocciola. Carte di guardia rinnovate. Numerose censure in inchiostro bruno, sottolineature e marginalia, nota di possesso manoscritta cassata al frontespizio. Al recto dell'ultima carta, impresso al margine inferiore, timbro raffigurante un bersaglio appeso a un nastro con motto 'OMNIBUS NON OMNIBUS', da riferire a Giacomo Francesco Arpino (1607-1684), protomedico ducale dei Savoia, bibliofilo e collezionista. Seconda edizione della traduzione latina del Nuovo Testamento di Erasmo. La peculiarità della presente copia, oltre alla illustre provenienza, risiede nei segni di ossidazione al margine esterno dell cc. O1r-O4r che riproducono la sagoma di occhiali da vista. Questo particolare, unito ai marginalia con correzioni testuali, alle sottolineature nel testo e alle puntuali censure di qualunque nome riformato, lascerebbero presupporre uno studio tanto approfondito da poter essere attribuito a una personalità coinvolta nella revisione e controllo dell'edizione. Piatti inquadrati da duplice filetto dorato, angoli sormontati da ferri floreali dorati, nello specchio rettangolare centrale fleuron impresso in oro; tracce di bindelle ai lati lunghi dei piatti anteriori. Dorsi a cinque nervi, scomparti decorati da ferro floreale impresso a secco. Dorsi restaurati, interventi di restauro anche in corrispondenza degli angoli esterni dei piatti e di una porzione del piatto posteriore del secondo volume. Al frontespizio di entrambi i volumi: nota di possesso manoscritta 'ex dono Domini Fournerij' e iscrizione manoscritta del Collegio gesuita d'Orléans, timbro della Bibliothèque Municipale d'Orléans, che ne attesta la dismissione quale duplicato. (2) Straordinario set in legatura uniforme, comprendente i due influenti commenti di Simplicio al De Anima e al De coelo di Aristotele. Del filosofo e matematico bizantino vissuto durante il VI secolo d.C, e allievo di Ammonio di Ermia ad Alessandria d'Egitto, ci sono pervenuti, oltre alle presenti opere, i commenti alla Fisica e alle Categorie di Aristotele e quello al Manuale di Epitetto. Minime bruniture e arrossature ma buon esemplare , ad ampi margini. Legatura coeva in pelle, duplice cornice a filetto impressa a secco ai piatti con cantonali floreali e fleuron romboidale in oro. Dorso restaurato con parti del dorso originale. Note di possesso "Bossuet" e "Morisot" al frontespizio, alla carta di guardia nota di acquisto dalla vendita Mirabeau, datata 1792; al contropiatto anteriore ex libris "LA". Prima edizione data alle stampe da Henri Estienne e prima edizione di un testo greco corredato di versione latina. Sebbene al frontespizio sia indicato che la versione è quella di Lorenzo Valla, in realtà la revisione operata da Estienne è tale che è possibile attribuirgliela interamente, cfr. Schrieber, p. 138: "Estienne has also included the Greek scholia, which surround the text on the page; he has been able to correct and clarify several thorny passages in Thucydides by his distinctive use of punctuation and parentheses, which was followed by later editors".

Macchia di umidità al centro del piatto posteriore. Legatura seicentesca in pergamena rigida, dorso istoriato in oro con titolo in oro su tassello parzialmente abraso in pelle marrone. Tagli azzurri. Al contropiatto anteriore ex libris Pier Luca Bencini. Seconda edizione di Estienne - con il testo corretto e l'inserimento degli scholia - considerata «the best 16th-century edition of the greatest historian of Athens» (Schreiber, p. 176). Altra novità è la disposizione della versione latina, ora stampata nella stessa pagina del testo greco, in colonne parallele. Sono inoltre inserite annotazioni latine agli scholia dei primi due libri, e la Chronologia Thucydididis dell'allievo di Melanchthon David Chytraeus (1531-1600), per la prima volta date alle stampe a Rostock tra il 1562 e il 1567, e in cui si mettono in rapporto gli eventi riportati da Erodoto e Tucidide con quelli riportati nella Bibbia e nella storia dell'Egitto e della Persia. Vengono inoltre inseriti gli argumenta di ogni singolo libro.

Lievi arrossature della carta lungo l'intero volume; macchie di inchiostro alla pagina 161 che non impediscono la lettura del testo, ma nel complesso copia in buono stato. Legatura coeva in pelle bianca scamosciata, con fregi a losanga. Dorso del XVIII secolo in pergamena, tassello in pelle recante titolo in oro. Nota di possesso al frontespizio di Aloisio Marsuzzi, ex libris dello stesso al contropiatto; altro ex libris Pier Luca Bencini al contropiatto. Al foglio di guardia anteriore, nota di possesso di Filippo Verri Mancini, Roma 1870. Alla parte inferiore del frontespizio una più antica nota "M. Io. Petris huius versionis vetus ... DD." Lunga nota in caratteri greci al foglio di guardia posteriore. Edizione dell'opera a cura di Iohannes Petri, come appare nella prefazione al frontespizio. Le singole opere di Senofonte sono curate da Filelfo, Bessarione, Leonardo Bruni Aretino ed Erasmo da Rotterdam.

Legatura coeva in pelle, duplice cornice a filetti in oro e a secco ai dorsi, al centro dei piatti grande fleuron ad arabeschi con aquila impresso in oro. Sguardie rinnovate nel settecento con carta marmorizzata. Al contropiatto anteriore ex libris Chatsworth ed ex libris 'Perran Wood'. Seconda edizione di Estienne, con il testo completamente rivisto rispetto all'edizione del 1561. Renouard, Estienne, 149.6: "Moins belle que l'edition de 1561, celle-ci (...) lui est de beaucoup superieure"; Dibdin II, 567: "The edition of 1581 has more intrinsic value than the preceding one. (...) The Latin version was published sep- arately, and is not always to be found with the Greek text". Hoffmann III, 577.

Houel Jean. Voyage Pittoresque des Isles de Sicile, de Malte et de Lipari... A Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Monsieur, 1782. 4 volumi in-folio (mm 510x325). I. vii, 138 con 72 carte di tavole incise in rame fuori testo e numerate I-LXXII; II. [4], 148 con 72 carte di tavole di cui una a doppia pagina, incise in rame fuori testo e numerate LXXIII-CXLIV; III. [4], 126 con 60 carte di tavole incise in rame fuori testo e numerate CXLV-CCIV; IV. [4], 124 con 60 carte di tavole di cui una a doppia pagina, incise in rame fuori testo e numerate CCV-CCLXIV (la tavola a doppia pagina è numerata CCXLV e CCXLVI). Splendido esemplare con la maggior parte delle tavole stampate su carta azzurra e tutte protette protette dalle veline dell'epoca. Minime macchie di ossido a poche carte. Esemplare praticamente privo delle usuali fioriture. Legatura coeva in marocchino rosso, tripla cornice in oro a cerchi, a greche e a motivi floreali in oro ai piatti, risguardi in carta marmorizzata, dentelles. Minimi restauri ai piatti posteriori del terzo e quarto volume. Al verso della carta di guardia del primo volume ex libris 'Ex Musaeo Hans Furstenberg'. (4) Esemplare Furstenberg-Schaefer di quella che è considerata la più bella opera di viaggio in Italia. Il testo è composto dal commento alle 264 incisioni all'acquatinta, molte delle quali con due soggetti (due su doppia pagina: mappa di Messina e mappa della Sicilia, numerate 245-246). L'uso dell'acquatinta nei toni del seppia ha inoltre consentito ad Houel di ottenere incisioni con effetti chiaroscurali molto più vicini alla sua sensibilità di pittore. L'artista, durante il secondo viaggio in Sicilia, iniziato nel 1776, impiegò un periodo di oltre tre anni per disegnare, dipingere e descrivere le antichità, i costumi e i diversi aspetti della natura (voleva infatti realizzare un'opera migliore e più approfondita di quelle redatte prima di lui). Per poter pubblicare l'opera tuttavia, Houel necessitò di un ulteriore finanziamento, oltre a quello già ricevuto dal governo francese, così vendette a Caterina II di Russia oltre cinquecento disegni e dipinti realizzati in Sicilia, parte dei quali si custodiscono all'Herrmitage di San Pietroburgo. Lavorerà poi senza sosta per otto anni ed inciderà le 264 lastre di rame. L'opera di Houel, per il rigore scientifico con cui l'autore realizza piante, sezioni e proiezioni ortogonali degli antichi monumenti, e per le informazioni che offre sugli aspetti antropologici ed etnologici dell'isola, costituisce una preziosa ed ineguagliabile testimonianza della Sicilia del Settecento ed è considerata uno dei migliori e più affascinanti esempi di libro di viaggio della storia della stampa. Testo di Ovidio circondato dal commento. Prima carta con antico restauro, forti bruniture e strappo centrale senza perdita, qualche macchia ed alone marginale, ma nel complesso bella copia genuina. Legatura in pergamena su cartone di fine Cinquecento con titolo manoscritto al dorso e al taglio inferiore. Piatto superiore staccato, dorso lacunoso. Esemplare fittamente postillato sul margine e in interlinea, forse da più mani, con presenza di maniculae e note in greco. Ristampa dell'edizione De Tortis 1482 dei Fasti di Ovidio accompagnati dall'esteso commento di Paolo Marsi. Molto interessanti le numerose postille manoscritte che corredano l'esemplare. Cinque volumi in-folio (mm 490x320). I. Pagine [6], xiii, [3], 252 con 2 mappe a doppia pagina, 1 veduta a doppia pagina, 1 veduta a piena pagina nel testo e 48 tavole incise in rame fuori testo; II. Pagine [6], xxviii, 1-108, [6], 109-283, [1] con 84 carte di tavole incise in rame fuori testo di cui una più volte ripiegata. III. Lievi bruniture e fioriture ma buon esemplare, con le 305 tavole protette dalle veline originali. Esemplare completo della celebre tavola del Phallus, spesso mancante. Legatura coeva in vitello biondo, cerniere dei volumi deboli, lacune alle cuffie. (5) Ricercata e splendida prima edizione del più importante e monumentale libro di viaggi illustrato di tutto il Settecento, dedicato ai Regni di Napoli e di Sicilia. Di assoluto rilievo l'apparato iconografico che consta di alcune carte geografiche e mappe topografiche a doppia pagina e quasi 300 tavole calcografiche con vedute di città e monumenti, dettagli edilizio-architettonici degli edifici descritti nel testo, oggetti d'arte e reperti archeologici tra cui qualli dei siti di Pompei. Questa opera preziosa, che fornisce quindi importanti testimonianze dei monumenti e dei ritrovamenti archeologici fatti al tempo, fu stampata "aux frais de l'auteur, l'abbé de Saint-Non, qui se ruina dans cette entreprise. Beaucoup des culs-de-lampe représentant des antiquités sont gravé par lui" (Cohen-Ricci, 928-930). Blackmer, 1473: "One of the monuments of french eighteenth-century book production"; Millard, French 148: "the completed work is one of the most beautiful that a private person has ever produced, and it is unparalleled among the sumptuous voyage pittoresque publications".

Gore e tracce di polvere al frontespizio e sulle carte, primo fascicolo allentato e con una carta strappata lungo il margine interno, parzialmente o totalmente staccati i fascicoli E, Cc, Dd e Ee, carte inziali con piccoli strapi lungo i bordi. Legatura coeva in pergamena su cartone, titoli manoscritti al dorso a 3 nervi. Piatto anteriore imbarcato, lacune al dorso, rotture lungo la cerniera anteriore, macchie e aloni ai piatti. Qualche sottolineatura e pochi marginalia, scheda moderna da catalogo antiquario incollata al contropiatto anteriore. Volume contenente, per la prima volta, la redazione definitiva degli Statuti cittadini risalenti al 1425 con l'aggiunta del Liber novus partium che raccoglie provvedimenti datati tra 1406 e 1565: nelle successive impressioni della raccolta normativa, questa sezione sarà progressivamente accresciuta e aggiornata (vedi lotti successivi). DAVISON, ALEXANDER AND HORATIO, LORD NELSON AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF DAVISON'S PAPERS RELATING TO PRIZE MONEY IN CONNECTION WITH NELSON'S SPANISH FRIGATES DISPUTE WITH LORD ST VINCENT comprising correspondence relating to the Spanish Prizes "Tetis" and "Santa Brigida", including Davison's retained copy of his letter of claim to the prize agents, on behalf of Lord Nelson, Commander in Chief on the Mediterranean Station, of "Two Thirds of one Eight(h)" of the prize money; with letters to Davison debating the matter by Thomas Maude, Cooke & Halford, Benjamin Tucker (Agent for the Prize Officers of the Mediterranean, several letters:... FATH CHAND (MUGHAL SCHOOL), NORTHERN INDIA circa 1750/1760Gujari Ragini, depicting a Lady seated by a tree holding a vina, signed by the artist on the lower tree trunk, and inscribed within lower part of scrolling floral bordergouache and gold on paper, unframedimage size 5 1/2 x 3 in, folio size 11 x 7 1/4 inThis painting is from a late Mughal Ragamala series, examples of which have appeared on the international art market occasionally, painted variously by Fath Chand and Faqirullah Khan circa 1750-1760 in Oudh. The artists having fled there following the Sack of Delhi. Chand executed 19 of the series of 36. There are other paintings in the series by Chand in the British Library (Ad.Or.485) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (M.2004.180) and an example painted by Khan in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2004.45)

Hill, John, Sir - The British Herbal, First edition. Large folio, original sheep boards - rebacked. Allegorical coloured engraving as frontispiece by H. Roberts after S. Wale, coloured engraved title page vignette, dedication page with coloured engraved arms of Earl of Northumberland and 75 plates of about 1500 botanical and herbal specimens. Printed for T. Osborne and J. Shipton in Gray's Inn. & c. London 1756Sir John Hill (1714-1775) was apparently from Peterborough. He was trained as an apothecary and set up a small shop in St. Martin's Lane. He travelled all over the country in search of rare herbs in order to write a herbal but this took longer than he thought. He was a prolific writer, his first publication being a translation of Theophrastuss History of Stones (1746). He edited the British Magazine (1746-1750), and for two years (1751-1753) he wrote a daily letter, The Inspector, for the London Advertiser and Literary Gazette. He also produced novels, plays and scientific works, and was a large contributor to the supplement of Ephraim Chambers's Cyciopaedia. His personal and scurrilous writings made him many enemies, including Henry Fielding, Christopher Smart and David Garrick all of whom attacked him in print. The Dictionary of National Biography attribute 76 different works the Hill but his most important are his botanical works. In addition Hannah Glasse's famous manual of cookery was generally ascribed to him (see Boswell, ed. Hill, iii. 285) as it was not readily believed that a woman could have written it. Dr Johnson said of him that he was an ingenious man, but had no veracity. The British Herbal, however, is a work of veracity and vitally important for modern botanical nomenclature in that not only did Hill attempt to name and categorize the flowers and herbs which grow in Britain but he classifed them on the forms of the corolla and gynoecium and criticised the Linnaean system.
