The copy offered here appears to be 'Edition C': an unsigned board binding with a print run between 6000-8000 copies. Qianlong, Emperor of China and Isidore-Stanislas Helman. RARE. This rare series of engravings record the battles and victories the Chinese Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799). The first series of views (nos.1-16) record the many conflicts with the Zunghars between 1754-1760 and were commissioned by the Emperor Qianlong in 1765. The original scheme was ambitious and when the production of the oversized copperplates faltered, a new printer and engraver, Isidore-Stanislas Helman, took over production, producing detailed copper-engraved plates on a more manageable scale. The original series of sixteen plates proved so successful, Helman produced two further series, smaller in scope, in 1786 and 1788. All series are present here. ** Some watermarks to lower right margin, light spotting throughout, text leaf creased and soiled with lower edge torn with minor loss of engraved borders, boards with extremities worn.

(without key)Captain Edward Henry Bayly, C.B. (1849 - 1904) had a lifelong career in the Royal Navy. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in September 1873, Commander in June 1887 and Captain in January 1894, having served overseas in numerous ships, He was Captain of H.M.S. Pelorus during the Fleet Review for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, see lot for his correspondence with Rudyard Kipling. In 1899 he became Captain of the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Aurora which served on the China Station in the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, some of her crew taking part in the Battle of Tientsin, and returning to England in March 1902. He retired at his own request in February 1904.Provenance. A descendant of Capt. E. H. Bayly. ** Mixed condition throughout, night order book with damaged spine, letters and others with some foxing, pages to some albums marked and spotted, notices/posters and some loose photos tatty in places. A fine archive in the condition one might expect.
