Blue ink signature ('Maria Meneghini Callas') at the head of an oblong folio page removed from a visitor's book, also signed by twelve other individuals including her husband Giovanni Battista Meneghini, the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky etc. Dated February 1957 in an unidentified hand. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing Baron Hermann Flemming to be a Second Adjutant of the Life Dragoon Royal Regiment. Signed by the King at the conclusion immediately above a blind embossed paper seal. With blank integral leaf. A light circular stain appears to the first page, evidently caused by the seal, only very slightly affecting the text (which remains perfectly legible), otherwise VG

DUCKWORTH JOHN: (1748-1817) British Admiral who served during the Seven Years' War, the American War of Independence, and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. L.S., J T Duckworth, three pages, folio, Newfoundland, 20th October 1810, to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury. The manuscript letter is marked Duplicate, and Duckworth writes to inform his correspondents of some Bills which have been drawn for the purpose of paying the salaries due to the Officers of the Supreme Court and Surrogates of Newfoundland, continuing to list thirteen individuals and the amounts that they have received. Duckworth also states that he has drawn a Bill in favour of James Macbraine, Captain Commandant of the Loyal Volunteers of St. John's, in payment of rations for the corps and another to John Bland, High Sheriff of Newfoundland. Some small tears to the edges and a few long, neat splits at the folds, and some light, minor staining, only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature, G Duckworth served as Commodore Governor of Newfoundland from 1810-12.

The manuscript document is addressed to Louis Druault and is a military commission appointing him to be a Major Commandant of the Principal Corps of Guadaloupe Rangers and Captain of a Company in the same Corps. The manuscript document is addressed to the Bishop of London and is a warrant for a Collection for the Poor, stating, in part, 'Being informed that the Poorer sort of Our Subjects in & about Our City of London do suffer great Hardships at this time, and being graciously disposed to do all that lies in us for their relief & support; We have thought fit heartily to recommend it to you & hereby expressly require you to take care that Publication be made in all Parish churches within Our said City….that the Church Wardens or Overseers of the Poor do the week following collect the Benevolence of Charitable & well disposed people at their respective Dwellings within each Parish for and towards the support & relief of Our said Poor Subjects….the several sums so collected to be paid immediately into the Chamber of London to be distributed to the several Parishes as the Lord Mayor….& you shall think fit & direct. And that Our own example may not be wanting, Our further Pleasure is, that you call upon Our Commissioners of Our Treasury for such sum of money as We have directed & appointed to be paid….' EMERSON WILLIAM: (1701-1782) English Mathematician. A.L.S., W Emerson, one page, folio, Hurworth, 14th March 1775, to the publisher John Nourse. Emerson informs his correspondent that he has almost finished his treatise ('It will be quite done by the time this letter reaches you') and explains 'I intended to have added some more articles, but must defer that, as I think the book will be about the usual size'. Emerson further continues 'I could wish that Everingham might print it, as he has done all the rest, and knows my manner of writing, and all circumstances, and so will make fewer mistakes. The only difficulty now is to get covers to send it back and forward….and for expedition, I have desired some Franks for Everingham, but if he does not print it, that order must be countermanded. I believe it will go off as readily as any other of the other books for there are several curious matters in it.' With address panel to the verso. Some light overall age wear and a few small file holes, tears, and minor areas of paper loss (largely caused by the original breaking of the seal to open the letter), only very slightly affecting a few words of text and not the signature, G John Nourse (1705-1780) English Publisher & Bookseller, a specialist in Scientific and Mathematical works. Emerson's A Miscellaneous Treatise containing several Mathematical Subjects was published in 1776. The present letter was most likely originally part of the William Upcott Collection of Manuscripts and Autograph Letters. Upcott (1779-1845) acquired all of the business letters of Nourse and his collection of manuscripts and letters was sold at three auctions in 1846, the British Library acquiring a proportion of the collection.

DAVIDSON JOHN: (1857-1909) Scottish Poet, known for his ballads. Autograph Poem Signed, John Davidson, one page, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1896/7). The manuscript poem is entitled Sunset and is a sestet of four stanzas of six lines each, beginning 'By down and shore the Southwest bore/ The scent of hay, an airy load:/ As if at fault it seemed to halt/ Then, softly whispering, took the road/ To haunt the evening like a ghost/ Or some belated pilgrim lost' and concluding 'Where shadow fell in glade and dell/ Uncovered shoulders nestled deep/ And here and there the braided hair/ Of rosy goddesses asleep:/ For in a moment clouds may be/ Dead, and instinct with deity'. Signed by Davidson at the foot. Autograph manuscripts of Davidson are scarce, not least due to his suicide at the age of 50. The page has at one stage been torn horizontally at the centre (not affecting the text) and is repaired to the verso. Some light creasing, age wear and a few minor tears at the edges, not affecting the text or signature, about G The present manuscript poem differs very slightly to the version in New Ballads (published by John Lane, The Bodley Head, London, 1897), a photocopy of which is included in the lot.

GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. A fine D.S., George R, as King, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at St. James's, 20th May 1761. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Charles Watson to be an ensign in the 25th Regiment of Foot, Commanded by William, Earl of Home. Countersigned at the foot by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792) British Prime Minister 1762-63, Secretary of State for the Northern Department 1761-62. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, overall a clean and attractive document, VG The signature of the Earl of Bute is amongst the rarest of all British Prime Ministers.

GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. D.S., George R, (a bold example), as King, at the head, two pages, folio, Court at Carlton House, 21st May 1822. The manuscript document is addressed to the Chairman, Justices of the Peace and High Sheriff for the County of Stafford and is a warrant granting a remission of a sentence to William James ('tried and convicted of stealing fowls') who was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, stating, in part, '…in consideration of some favourable circumstances humbly represented unto us…[we]…Remit unto him such part of his said sentence as remains yet to be undergone and performed. Our Will and Pleasure therefore is that you cause him…to be forthwith discharged out of Custody'. Countersigned at the conclusion by Robert Peel (1788-1850) British Statesman, Home Secretary 1822-27, 1828-30 and Prime Minister 1834-35, 1841-46. With a blind embossed paper seal affixed. With blank integral leaf. Some very slight age wear and a couple of minor, neat splits at the edges of the folds. Some slight staining caused by the seal only very slightly affects Peel's signature. HORSERACING: An unusual multiple signed 12 x 9.5 photograph by the jockeys Lester Piggott, Willie Carson, Frankie Dettori, Pat Eddery and Walter Swinburn individually, the image depicting the five jockeys standing together in a row in three quarter length poses, each wearing their racing colours, at Nottingham Racecourse, Colwick, on the occasion of Piggott's final race, 29th October 1985. Signed by each jockey with their names alone to clear areas of the image. Piggott's signature is very scratchy and only partially legible. Together with a blue ink signature ('Lester Piggott') by Piggott on a white card and also accompanied by an unsigned folio printed newspaper supplement issued by the Nottingham Evening Post in recognition of Piggott's career and final race. GODERICH VISCOUNT: (1782-1859) British Prime Minister August 1827 - January 1828. L.S., Goderich, two pages, folio, Downing Street, 16th August 1832, to General Sir James Campbell. The manuscript letter is marked Duplicate and No 40 and states that Campbell's despatch of 22nd May has been received, Goderich continuing 'I have to request that you will express to the Slaves Joseph & Philip Davies, my regret that it is not in the power of His Majesty's Govt. to direct their enfranchisement, in as much as they were sold by the Receiver of Escheated Property, at a time when such sale was not contrary to the instructions of His Majesty's Government'. A small tear to the left edge, causing a small amount of irregular paper loss, and with some slight traces of former mounting to the verso, none of which affect the text or signature, G

BRITISH ROYALTY: A large D.S. by both Prince Henry (1900-1974) Duke of Gloucester, brother of King George VI and Mary, Princess Royal (1897-1965) Countess of Harewood, sister of King George VI, individually, on behalf of King George VI, one page, large oblong folio, Court of Saint James's, 5th March 1947. The partially printed document appoints Thomas Wikeley to be a Consul General for the Prefectures of Attica-Boeotia, Phthiolis-Phocis, Euboea, Chios, Samos and the Cyclades (except Cerigo), the Province of Argolis and the Island of Mytilene, and to reside at Athens, with effect from 28th December 1946, following a decision 'for the encouragement of Our Subjects trading to Greece'. Countersigned at the foot by Clement Attlee (1883-1967) British Prime Minister 1945-51 (unusually signing with his complete name Clement Richard Attlee). With blind embossed seal. ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. D.S., Albert, as Steward for his son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, two pages, folio, n.p., 6th May 1842. The manuscript document appoints George Freeth of Lincolns Inn Fields to be a Deputy Steward for the Duchy of Cornwall and authorises and empowers him 'to do all things belonging and appertaining to the Office of Steward....in as full and ample a manner as I myself could do if personally present at the doing thereof.....' Boldly signed by Prince Albert at the conclusion alongside a small red wax seal. With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor age wear and some slight splitting at the folds (neatly and professionally strengthened in a few places). About VG Queen Victoria had given birth to Prince Albert Edward on 9th November 1841. Being her first son, he became the Prince of Wales, Duke of Saxony and Duke of Cornwall. His father, Prince Albert, as illustrated by the present document, was Steward of the affairs of the Duchy of Cornwall until his son became of age. The young Prince would have only been six months old when his father signed the present document.

Gowrie (relative of Bruce Gowrie 1918-1943 Canadian Warrant Officer, Wireless Operator of Lancaster ED936/G AJ-H of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943) Two A.Ls.S., Mrs Gowrie and Mrs M A Gowrie, each one page, 4to and 8vo, Saskatoon, 5th October 1977 & 5th October 1978, both to [Alan Cooper], stating that Gowrie was born on the 15th April 1918 and never worked for any one, 'Just finished his Radio course when he joined the army forces', also reporting that she can not locate Gowrie's log book ('I must have destroyed it at some time') and that she received $900 from the Government at the time of his death, 'He had not spent any of his pay'; May Hopkinson (sister of Donald Hopkinson 1920-1943 British Flight Officer, Bomb aimer of Lancaster ED864/G AJ-B of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943. Hopkinson was killed in action on the raid) A.L.S., May Hopkinson, two pages, 8vo, Oldham, Lancashire, 29th September 1977, to [Alan] Cooper, explaining that she is Hopkinson's youngest sister, 'I was only 16 when he was killed, but I would like to help in any way I can....', and with an 8vo page of holograph biographical notes confirming Hopkinson's date of birth, education and employment before joining the RAF in 1941; Edward McFadden (pupil of Kenneth Earnshaw 1918-1943 British Flight Officer, Navigator of Lancaster ED925/G AJ-M of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943. Earnshaw was killed in action on the raid) Lengthy A.L.S., Edward McFadden, seven pages, folio, William's Lake, Canada, 10th July 1977, to [Alan] Cooper, discussing at length his experiences of being taught by Earnshaw in Canada, in part, 'He was our teacher for only two short terms, but he has left an impression exceeding that of all the others...He pitched for the village baseball team...it was wonderful to have a person like this, a baseball player, and a man of the world, within reach - he was our boss, our leader, but always remained on our level. Ken Earnshaw was not only athletic and strong, but was physically tough as well...(he)...had a volatile side to his nature, and was known to erupt violently from time to time.....To my knowledge Ken Earnshaw never attended church....On the day of Ken's death, May 16, 1943, my mother also passed away. The shock and sorrow of those distant days was deepened by the word of Ken's untimely end. We had received word some time before that his tour of duty was complete and that he would soon be back in Canada. The loss of our greatly respected teacher was a bitter disappointment'. ARLINGTON EARL OF: (1618-1685) English Statesman, a member of the Cabal Ministry. Lord Chamberlain 1674-85. A.L.S., Arlington, two pages, folio, Whitehall, 13th June 1676, to 'My Lorde' (annotated in pencil as being Sir Horatio, 1st Viscount Townshend). Arlington writes concerning preparations for the reassembling of Parliament and the differences between his correspondent and the monarch, King Charles II, in part, '...Wee are making as great preparations for the reassembling againe of the old Parlomont as if it were to come sooner than its time, though noe such thing is yet talked off but it is only to confront those who seeme to live in a beliefe still that the old one will bee disolved and a new called speedily but I confess it be but little probability of it...'. With blank integral leaf. Some extremely minor, very light age wear, VG Horatio Townshend (1630-1687) 1st Viscount Townshend. English Politician, a supporter of King Charles II who played an important role in the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

WALPOLE ROBERT: (1676-1745) British Prime Minister 1721-42. D.S., R Walpole, one page, folio, Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, January 1730. The manuscript document is an order for a payment of two hundred and fifty pounds to be made to Hugh, Lord Clinton, being one quarter of his annuity of one thousand pounds due to him as a Gentleman of His Majesty's Bedchamber. Signed by Walpole in the right margin and also bearing various countersignatures including Sir George Oxenden (1694-1775) English Politician, Lord of the Treasury and Sir William Yonge (c.1693-1755) English Politician, Lord of the Treasury. Also signed by Lord Clinton to the verso, acknowledging receipt of the contents of the order on 5th February 1730. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a couple of small, neat splits to the edges, one only very slightly affecting one letter of Walpole's signature, otherwise VG

Some overall age wear and minor rubbing (resulting in a few areas of illegible text) and a few circular stains, some affecting the text. The King's signature is a little light, although legible. A 19th Century scrapbook of Heraldic Crests including many plates from "Blason ou Art Heraldique", together with further engraved or hand-drawn / painted crests, marbled paper board bound with tooled and gilded spine, together with one volume of photographic plates of "Scenes of Woburn", together with two illuminated panels inscribed "St. Mary's Woburn Parish Church ..... Presented to The Reverend Charles Russell Dickinson (MA TCD) by The Undersigned Inhabitants of Woburn and other friends.... , January 1913", tooled and gilded red leather bound and a letter / typed note by H J Rooke dated November 1974 written from Middlesex Hospital London describing ".... What Wobun was like in the Good Old Days ...." (3) CONDITION REPORTS There are three separate items in this lot: - the red leather covered book St Marys Woburn Parish Church, the second item is a black book Blason ou art heraldique, and the third item is a typewritten letter by Rooke. The Blason has the individual plates are separate by hand stuck scrap book style pieces of related interested, present are plates 1 to 15 and then plate 19, plate 24, plate 26, plate 27, plate 28, plate 29, plate 30, and plate 31, the pages are interspersed with various paper cuttings and other sections of books, plates, a limited number of watercolours, etc. Paper is tatty around the edges, some small rips, some yellowing, some foxing, etc. The red leather book - pages are coming out of the binding, some yellowing and signs of foxing throughout. The typewritten stapled folio has some rips, yellowed paper, tatty paper, etc.

Interior with discolouration and yellowing throughout. Various areas of staining throughout.

CIRCLE OF TINGQUA (JUAN) LIANCHANG (c. 1809-1870) "Conchological studies", 12 pages, depicting 64 studies of sea shells, watercolours on rice paper, bears inscription "Tingqua" to inside leaf, housed in a woven fabric covered folio, 23 cm x 32 cm CONDITION REPORTS The cover is of woven fabric (not embroidered). The blue fabric ribbon edging which holds the rice paper pictures in place is creased and faded and ribbon is separating from backing pages in most cases. The rice paper pictures have some wear and a few stains, some splits and holes, and some areas of loss. The rice paper does not appear to be stuck down - it appears to be held in place to the backing pages by the blue ribbon surrounds. Colours of paintings generally appear quite good. The ribbon surrounds appear to have protected the edges of the rice paper from the worst of the wear. Some of the rice paper paintings have some quite large areas of holes and losses and splits (please see photos). The folio / album itself is in very poor and disintegrating condition with the edges of the backing pages / leaves of the folio very worn, discoloured, with tears, losses and fragility to the edges.
