FREDERICK HANKINSON.Reverend Hankinson came from a family dedicated to Unitarianism and belief in the equality of men and women, so was naturally drawn to the suffrage movement. He was a friend of Frederick Pethick Lawrence and his wife and joined the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in 1907, becoming a prison visitor in his capacity as a Unitarian minister in 1908. He visited suffragettes incarcerated in Holloway, Brixton and Aylesbury, reading them letters from home and bringing comfort from the outside world, as our letters of appreciation attest. Amongst those he visited were Edmée Manning, Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Muriel Matters and Katherine Gatty but, although she requested to see him (at the request of Emmeline Pankhurst), a visit to the first hunger striker Marion Wallace-Dunlop was not to be (see a group of her letters in this collection below). In a letter now held in the Fawcett Library, Dr Alice Ker wrote to her daughter: '...[he] sees Unitarians... Theosophists and all the queer sects. As he is our spiritual advisor, the wardress sits outside the glass door during his visit. He is the brickiest of brick of anybody yet – gives any amount of time and trouble to us...' (Crawford, E., The Women's Suffrage Movement, A Reference Guide 1866-1928, 1999, p.268).A portion of these papers are concerned with his dispute with the Prison Commission, who removed him from his duties after accusations that he had broken prison regulations by whispering to two prisoners, Violet Bland and Charlotte Marsh. He strenuously denied he was passing on political information but, nonetheless, a Mr Gow was appointed in his place, and Hankinson never returned. As a memento of his visits he retained a list of all prisoners visited by him between 1907 and 1913 and the present autograph album. Hankinson joined the United Suffragists in 1914 and during the First World War worked in Hungary for the Society of Friends. In the 1920's he returned to Hungary as a delegate of the American Unitarian Women's League and was an active committee member until his death in 1960.These papers were bequeathed to Reginald Couzens, the grandfather of the present owners whom he had met through the Unitarian church.Provenance: The Rev. Frederick Hankinson (1875-1960); Reginald Andrew Couzens (b.1904); thence by descent to the present owner. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

MARRIED WOMEN'S PROPERTY ACT 1882Manuscript petition presented by Harriet and George Grote 'To the Right Honorable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament Assembled, The Humble Petition of the undersigned Inhabitants of the Western Postal District of London. Sheweth that the law concerning the property of married women is unjust in principle', signed ('H: Grote' and Geo: Grote') at foot, one page, written in brown ink on vellum, small stain at head, slight dust-staining at edges, tall folio (380 x 202mm.) [c.1860-1870]Footnotes:EARLY PETITION FOR GENDER EQUALITY, presented by Harriet and George Grote in support of what would become the Married Women's Property Act of 1882. The first attempt at legislation, the similarly-named 1870 Act, allowed for married women to keep their wages and investments independent of their husbands, inherit small sums, and to hold property. But it was seen by many as a feeble compromise and the Married Women's Property Committee campaigned for further reform, eventually leading to the 1882 Act whereby women were allowed to own, buy and sell property, keep any income from the property or an occupation, and keep any inheritance. At the same time they would be liable for their own debts.Harriet Grote, host to the Philosophical Radicals and writer, was married to the co-signatory, the politician George Grote. Her wide social circle included John Stuart Mill, Helen Taylor, Barbara Bodichon, Harriet Martineau, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Mendelssohn and Jenny Lind. She was one of the signatories of the 1866 Petition (see previous lot), and spoke at the first public meeting of the Millicent Fawcett's London National Society for Women's Suffrage in 1869.The date of the present petition is unclear. It demands 'that property, personal or otherwise, belonging to the woman at marriage, or which she might subsequently acquire... should be under her control...' and that 'the earnings of a married woman obtained by separate occupation or trade should legally belong to her...', and, as George was to die in June 1871, may predate the 1870 Act. Whilst Harriet remained active until her death in 1878, she did not live to see the reforms fully enacted. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Official Organ of the Women's Social and Political Union, 98 issues comprising: nos. 1-95 (vol. 1-3 complete), plus duplicates of nos. 2, 28 and 46, most with large illustration on p.1, some illustrations in the text, foxing and browning, a few issues split at spine, some frayed at edges (3 or 4 with some loss), folio and small folio, 18 October 1912-7 August 1914, sold as a periodical not subject to return (98)Footnotes:Complete run of the first three volumes of Christabel Pankhurst's The Suffragette, covering the period October 1912 to August 1914.The Suffragette came into being in 1912 following the split between the Pethick Lawrences and Christabel Pankhurst, who assumed editorship of the new weekly journal of the WSPU. The following year she fled to France to avoid arrest, and although Annie Kenney filled her shoes in London, the newspaper's circulation of about 17,000 copies at its peak never matched that of its predecessor Votes for Women. This was partly due to the war, but also to governmental suppression of the newspaper and the arrests of some of the publishers and printers. The issue for 2 May 1913 features the single word 'Raided!!' in the otherwise blank cover space. The Police had raided the WSPU headquarters and tried to prevent printing from going ahead. Grace Roe, before escaping to Paris, arranged for this issue to appear the next day. Although there are a number of runs of The Suffragette in libraries and institutions, auction records list only a group of 7 issues sold in these rooms in 2008, and a significant run sold at Sotheby's in 1975.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

TRIAL OF 1909The Trial of the Suffragette Leaders, 48pp., portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, stapled in publisher's printed wrappers, front cover with photographic illustration depicting 'Inspector Jarvis reading the Warrant', some soiling, chip to edge of lower cover and foot of spine, 8vo, The Woman's Press, [1909]; together with a sheet of draft notes by the magistrate, Curtis Bennett, possibly for the summing up in the trial, with deletions and amendments, 2 pages, on embossed 'Police Court Bow Street' paper, creased, folio (332 x 206mm.), [October 1908]Footnotes:Extremely scarce pamphlet containing a full account of the 1908 trial of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond, which took place on October 14-24. It includes statements from those involved (beginning with a long speech by Christabel Pankhurst), the evidence of the witnesses, Christabel's cross-examination of David Lloyd George, and the final summing up and sentencing by the Magistrate, Curtis Bennett. His notes sold with the lot indicate he was in no doubt that the handbill published by the WSPU had served to incite large crowds 'to assemble in public to commit a 'wrongful and illegal act' by 'rushing' the House of Commons, thus causing breach of the peace. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

VOTES FOR WOMENVotes for Women. Edited by Frederick & Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, vol. IV. October 1910, to September 1911 [nos. 135-186], 5 page index at front, numerous illustrations throughout, slight browning as usual, original purple half sheep, rebacked preserving most of original backstrip, decorative white buckram-covered boards lettered in gilt, upper cover with the WSPU 'angel of freedom' logo designed by Sylvia Pankhurst in purple and green, rather rubbed and soiled, folio, [Printed by St Clements Press, Ltd, for the Women's Social & Political Union], 1910-1911Footnotes:Complete fourth volume of the Pethick Lawrence's official organ of the WSPU, covering the the period October 1910 to September 1911, and including the events of 'Black Friday'. Copies in this original volume form are rare, only a handful, either singly or in runs, appearing in auction records. In October 1910 the suffragists and militant suffragettes appeared to be on the verge of a breakthrough. Parliament was considering the Conciliation Bill, which would have given some privileged women the vote, and there had been a suspension of militant action. But when Asquith called an election in November, the bill was dropped, leading to the events of the notorious 'Black Friday' demonstration in London on 18 November. 300 women marched to the Houses of Parliament to protest, and when a WSPU deputation was sent away by Asquith, events took a violent turn, women being viciously assaulted, sometimes sexually, by the police and hostile male bystanders. The article in Votes for Women on November 25, titled 'The End of the Truce', contains eye-witness accounts from Evelyn Sharp and Sylvia Pankhurst, and also reports that charges against the women 114 women arrested were dropped in an 'electioneering dodge of Mr. Churchill', the Home Secretary. The events of 'Black Friday' influenced suffragettes in different directions in the new year. Some were unwilling to risk being assaulted and used guerilla-style tactics, whilst others were emboldened and became more militant, the WSUP officially adopting window-smashing as a campaign weapon in November that year.Provenance: The Suffragette Club, inscription on front free endpaper. The Club was founded by Edith How Martyn in 1926, and their archives now form now the Suffrage Fellowship Collection held by the Museum of London. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Her father was a tinman and brazier and, as one of eleven children, she grew up acutely aware of the marginalisation of the lower classes. She naturally gravitated towards the Chartist movement, of which she was an active sympathiser, and is believed to have coined the phrase 'levelling up' in her weekly miscellany Eliza Cook's Journal: '...The number of self-risen men, sprung up from the ranks, is increasing and must increase... And the mass too is advancing with education and knowledge, and they too must gradually become leveled up' she wrote (quoted in Chakrabarty, D., The Chartist Poetry of Eliza Cook: A Study, 30 March 2015, theconfidentialclerk.com website). She was a prolific contributor to the weeklies and periodicals of the day including the Literary Gazette and her simplicity of form and subject matter was enormously popular with the public both in Britain and America, leading to comparisons to Robert Burns, whom she greatly admired. Her poem The Old Armchair of 1838 made her a household name. As well as encouraging education for all, she was a proponent of political and sexual freedom for women: '...The sentiments expressed in Cook's poetry and prose reflect her efforts to break free from the societal limitations imposed on her class and gender... Cook dressed in unconventionally masculine attire and wore her hair short... She never married, and from 1845 to 1849 she was closely linked with the American actress Charlotte Cushman (1816–1876), to whom she wrote passionate poetic tributes...' (Solveig C. Robinson, ODNB). Our poem 'Master Onny', written for her nieces about the arrival of a cat called Master Johnny, appears to be unpublished. 'Time's Changes', also included here, was widely published in a longer form, in her Journal (16 April 1853, no.207, p.393) and in Poems by Eliza Cook, London, 1861.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

GREENAWAY - PRINTING BLOCKSA key block and 5 colour blocks for 'Marigold Garden', engraved by Edmund Evans for the illustration of three children on a bridge on p.54, key block with metal type attached, the pink block split down centre and lacking a small blank section of corner, key block 170 x 135mm., the others smaller, contained in large morocco-backed solander box together with mounted copies of title page and p.54, spine soiled, oblong folio, [c.1885]Footnotes:Evans used a woodblock printing technique known as chromoxylography, which was used primarily for inexpensive children's books requiring few colours. Then they held my head back and forced this Nasal tube, which was most agonising... I did not know how to breathe... What I went through all that night I cannot tell... pains in my head, pains in my ears, and my nose was pouring all night through and I was vomiting all night through... I simply felt mad to think that anybody could be so cruel... 'Now take my advice and take the cup' [the Doctor said] 'I tell you I won't; you shall carry me out a corpse first'... With that the gag was put in my mouth. The same performance gone through... She was imprisoned several times, notably in February 1909 when she served six weeks in Holloway. It is there she met Constance Lytton, who makes mention of her in Prison and Prisoners and later, as seen here, wrote to her reminiscing about their time together: '...I wish people who scoff at our imprisonments could know more of what you have had to suffer in Holloway...' she writes. In 1911 Emily rejoined the WSPU, preferring their more militant stance, and threw herself into their campaign of window smashing and was arrested and imprisoned several times. On 26 March 1912 she began a six month's sentence at Winson Green Prison in Birmingham. At the end of four months in prison she joined in the hunger strike and was forcibly fed. Her harrowing account of this ordeal is included here and she received an illuminated scroll in recognition (see lot....). Amongst her papers is a letter dated 1924 from Emmeline Pethick Lawrence who gives news of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst and writes in gratitude '...I think of Lady Constance & Emily Davidson & of you & many others... whose lives have helped to make our present work possible...'.Her husband Ernest and children Victor, Elsie, Norah, Laura, Winifred and Barbara were all involved in the cause, some also going to prison, their names included in the Roll of Honour. Also included in the lot is a photograph of three of the Duval sisters reading a copy of Votes for Women and a newspaper cutting from the Daily Sketch of 1912 reporting on the wedding of Una Dugdale and Victor Duval in which the caption speculates controversially on whether the bride agreed to 'obey' her husband. Tragically, three of the Duval daughters – Winifred, Elsie and Barbara - did not live long enough to see the vote (see Crawford, E., The Women's Suffrage Movement: A Reference Guide 1866-1928, 1999, for detailed information on the Duval family). Melly introduced the pioneering late night live jazz programme on the BBC, with these two scripts introducing Bob Wallis and his Storyville Jazzmen, and The Tommy Whittle Quartet. Presumably inspired by his interest in Surrealist spontaneity Melly's rapid sketches - taking in a cast of sailors, prisoners, royalty, etc. - are prompted by the titles of the jazz tunes in the programme; 'Everybody Loves Saturday Night' (group sex), 'Duke's in Bed' (involving a figure in a crown), 'We'll be together again' (under the table activity during a prison visit), 'Combined Effort' (group sex), 'So Do It' (a sailor and an eager man), 'Someday Somehow' (a nude Vanessa Redgrave and excitable Bernard Levin), etc.Provenance: George Melly; family descent. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
