Constable (John) Various Subjects of Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery, principally intended to display the phenomena of the Chiar'oscuro of Nature, signed presentation inscription from Constable to Edward Davies dated April 1836 to upper cover, 22 fine plates by David Lucas after paintings by Constable, including the frontispiece and vignette, text comprising title, list of engravings, half-title with verses, introduction and 1p. descriptive text for East Bergholt, Suffolk (frontispiece), mezzotints with etching and drypoint, excellent well inked impressions on cream laid paper, some sheets with partial watermarks of the letters 'F . D', each leaf approx. 295 x 425 mm. (11 1/2 x 16 3/4 in), the frontispiece and 'Noon' with small repairs to upper right corners, and 'A Seabeach' with lower right corner margin repaired, occasional very light finger-soiling to margins, but a remarkably clean and fresh example overall, later cloth-backed wrappers with original printed upper cover laid down, initialled 'J.C.' to lower corner, partial ring mark visible, preserved in chemise and broken slip-case, oblong folio, 1833.⁂ Presentation copy of Constable's superb set of mezzotints.Edward Davies is probably Edward Davis (1813-1878), Welsh portrait sculptor. He would have been 23 at the time of this inscription and would go on to exhibit nearly 100 works of sculpture at the Royal Academy including a bust of Constable in 1875.

Dillmann after Sonderland (another version of 1 of these from another work loosely inserted), 8 plates of hawks mounted on board, these with some browning, 'Le Tiercelet sors de l'autour' plate with section missing from upper margin, marginal tears and chips, some light browning and spotting, loose in original cloth-backed printed boards, lacking backstrip and ties, corners worn, rubbed and marked, [Harting 194; Schwerdt II, p.150; Thiebaud 833; Nissen IVB 832; Fine Bird Books, p.105; Zimmer p.554], folio, Leiden & Dusseldorf, Arnz & Co., 1844-1853.⁂ 'The finest work on falconry that has ever been produced; not only on account of the beauty of the plates, wherein the hawks are depicted life-size and of the natural colours, but also for the general accuracy of the letterpress' (Harting). This opinion is supported by Schwerdt, who found the life-size illustrations of hawks 'by far the finest ever produced in any book on falconry'.

China.- d'Anville (Jean Baptiste Bourguignon) Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, de la Tartarie Chinoise, et du Thibet, title page printed in red and black, 42 engraved maps, some double-page or folding, contemporary outline colour, some worming affecting text rather than maps, the majority of the maps with damp-stains in the upper right quadrant, the majority of the maps with areas of loss in the upper corner quadrants repaired and reinstated with pen and ink, the latter half with larger areas repaired and condition deteriorating towards end of atlas, effecting both maps and margins, three maps with margins trimmed, otherwise browning and surface dirt throughout, contemporary red morocco, gilt, rubbed and worn, re-cased preserving spine, large folio measuring approx. 530 x 385 mm., The Hague, Henri Scheurleer, 1737; sold not subject to return.⁂ The first scientific mapping of China, deriving from a triangulated survey carried out by French Jesuits, at the behest of the Emperor Kang Hsi. It forms the most important cartographic record of China from the eighteenth century.

Sir James Liege Hulett, modern half brown morocco over marbled boards, text with 10 lithographed plates, 5 tinted, 3 double-page, with 64pp. publisher's catalogue and 16pp. supplement to catalogue at end, light foxing to plates, original blind-stamped cloth, rubbed and a little faded or soiled, rebacked, corners repaired, preserved in modern half-brown morocco drop-back box, [Abbey, Travel 467], folio & 8vo, John Weale, 1845.⁂ James Fergusson (1808-86) retired a wealthy man after ten years as an indigo planter in India and was able to pursue his interest in architecture. He became a notable architectural historian and prolific author on ancient architecture, particularly that of the Indian subcontinent. This, his first work, was the first of several on the cave temples of India and is rarely found with the accompanying text volume. Fergusson used a camera-lucida to assist him in his drawings made on the spot.

(10 1/2 x 16 3/4 in), scattered surface dirt, spotting, and handling creases, original morocco with the crowned initials 'LF' on the upper cover, and with documents envelope affixed to the rear pastedown with the gilt inscription 'Gewappneter Löwe, der du bewachst Hessens Gränze; wache auch hier, und schutze vor Neugierde' and the lion of Hesse, worn and scuffed, oblong folio, [c. 1820-1880].

Blake dedicated the watercolours to Ann Flaxman who hid them to protect Blake from the authorities due to their republican overtones but they came into Paul Mellon's possession in the mid-20th century. The reproduction was a mammoth undertaking, employing eighteen artists for four years and using up to forty-two stencils per plate.

Crowley, Aleister. Hymn to Pan, London: Aeon Art Ltd., 1980, 1st ed., elephant folio Crowley's 'Hymn to Pan' was written during his visit to Moscow in the summer of 1913. It was first published in 1919 in The Equinox, Volume III, Number 1. This edition is accompanied by ten silkscreen prints by Andre Durand re-interpreted from chalk drawings he made in 1978, and is one of 75 copies plus ten artist's proofs. Durand's powerful images in the European Hermetic tradition are printed with four colour mezzotint separations with over-lays handworked by the artist, on BFK mould-made 270gsm paper. Each print is embossed with the printer's chop. The collection is contained in a handmade Solander box. Each print measures 23 x 17.5"
