Edwards (Sir Fleetwood Isham, 1842-1910) exercises drawn at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in geometry and perspective, sections, elevations and plans of various fortification and means of attack, 8 pen and ink drawings with various coloured or monochrome washes, 5 each c.300 x 465mm., 3 folding out to 465 x 670mm., all signed and dated, original cloth boards, worn, upper board gilt-lettered Fortification Plates, R.M.A., F. Edwards, detached, folio, 1861-62. ***Sir Fleetwood Isham Edwards (1842-1910) left Harrow School for Sandhurst in 1861. He received a commission in the Royal Engineers in 1863. In the 1870s he was inspector of works at Woolwich Arsenal, then aide-de-camp to General Sir John Lintorn Simmons, inspector-general of fortifications. Following his contributions to the Berlin Congress, in 1878, he was appointed assistant privy purse and assistant private secretary to Queen Victoria. He later became head of the queen`s personal household, a privy councillor, and a close personal advisor. He was an executor of her will in 1901.
A George IV rosewood folio cabinet, the top with a moulded edge, fitted with sliding shelves with reeded edged fronts, between split baluster column stiles, fitted with a drawer at the base, having panelled sides on castors, 87cm (2ft 10 1/4in) width, 64cm (2ft 1 1/4in) depth, 77.5cm (2ft 6 1/2in) high.
During the 1930’s & 1940’s Lydia Craven ran a bookshop at Wilmington House, East Grinstead, Sussex. The printed books that follow are from her collection and it would appear also from her stock-in-trade as there are, in a few cases, duplicate copies. Many published in the 1930’s & 1940’s retain their d.w’s and the condition is generally very good.Lot 53. VERVE: Vol. 1, Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 4 1937-1938, with Vol.2, Nos. 5 & 6 (a double number) 1939.
