Jacobites An Act against Corresponding with the late King James and his Adherents Printed Act of Parliament dated 1697 7pp folio plus title disbound. Despite the victory of William III against his father in law James II at the Battle of the Boyne the Jacobite threat remained as strong as ever and of course was to continue until the draconian suppression of the Highlands in the wake of the Battle of Culloden 50 years later. This Act made it an offence of High Treason to have anything to do with the exiled King James.

Lot 157

Crime and Punishment – ‘The Staines Tragedy’ remarkable hand written account identified as in the hand of W H Bailey detailing the entire case of the abduction and subsequent death of Edith Neale aged five whose body was found in a cornfield near Staines in 1911. The account written in a neat hand on 43pp large folio also contains contemporaneous press cuttings relating to the tragedy. Edith Neale was abducted while walking along a country lane by an unidentified man. Her body was eventually found after more than 2000 local people joined Police in searching for her. William Standing was subsequently arrested and picked out of an identity parade by three witnesses. However the Police could not provide enough evidence to convict him of murder and he was eventually convicted on a manslaughter charge for being responsible for the girl wandering off into the field. He was sentenced to 12 years hard labour but enraged everyone by his jocular greeting of the sentence. The account also contains two original witness summonses issued to a housemaid named Sarah Bailey – and it is logical to assume that the writer of this account was connected to her.

The diary is particularly notable for his observations in the USA – he witnesses the building work on the tomb of U S Grant for example. He then comments extensively on the celebrations on the election of President MacKinlay ‘...ladies and gentlemen all dressed out in evening dress & low necked dresses seemed to have crowed to the hall of this hotel armed with all the most objectionable sounding musical instruments to hear the result of the Presidential election... returns came in every few minutes from all over the states...about 11 o’clock there came the returns from one of the large cities. Never have I heard the like to the din after that was given out. The whole hall was raving for two or three minutes... this continued until 1 am when the gentleman who read out the results said ‘gentlemen I mean ladies & gentlemen I will keep you no longer MacKinlay is undoubtedly elected.’ The brought a blast & rattle that would far surpass the one that knocked down the wall of Jericho...’ President MacKinlay was one of the four US Presidents to be assassinated in office.

Autographs – Paul Valery – League of Nations The Palace of the League of Nations by Louis Cheronnet Paris: L’Illustration 1938. Folio. 72 pages. First edition. An illustrated book on the Palace of the League of Nations in Geneva. Sections of the large beaux art building were designed by many different architects emblematic of the good and bad points of the League itself. Included are several proposed designs which were not used. Illustrated in colour and black and white. This was a souvenir presentation to Miss K J Stafford who served the League of Nations from 1919-1939 and inside the front cover is tipped in six folio leaves bearing a considerable number of signatures of the League’s Secretariat. Included is an autograph sentiment by the French writer and philosopher Paul Valery who was a French Representative at the League. This volume thus provides a unique compilation of signatures of the people who were operating the League at its very end. Formed in 1919 as an attempt to ensure that the world never again fell into a World War the League became defunct in December 1939 after the activities of Hitler and Mussolini rendered its high ideals totally irrelevant. Its failure however led to the eventual establishment of the United Nations.

Autograph – Maritime – Cuthbert Collingwood Admiral assumed command at Trafalgar after the death of Nelson autograph letter signed to Admiral Sir Charles Cotton dated Ocean at Malta January 24th 1809 commenting on the ‘unhappy people’ of Portugal ‘who are captive at Algier... no people at Algier suffer so much as the Portuguese from the total want of relief by their Government the affairs of Portugal have been so deranged of late that it accounts for their omission but I hope in the present state the Ministers may be at leisure to advent to a subject in which the national character is involved...’ 1p folio. The salutation and signature of this letter were cut from the letter at some stage in the past and mounted with a print of Collingwood as a display item.
