Marian Allen is best remembered for a sequence of sonnets known popularly as 'The Wind on the Downs', after the title of the small 63 page book of poems she published in 1918. The book (published by I.A. Richards) also contained the poem 'The Raiders' which describes early war-time aviation, and was written just a few days before she received news that her fiancé had been shot down and killed on a bombing raid in 1917.

Horse Racing. Presentation album of photographs of Foxhill House stables, Wanborough, Wiltshire, circa 1920, specially produced album containing 33 black & white mounted photographs by the photographer Clarence Hailey of Newmarket, comprising exterior views of the house, yard, portraits of the horses with trainers & stable hands etc., and portraits of horses from paintings, majority with printed captions to mount, all edges gilt, original black morocco with 'Foxhill' applied in gilt to upper board, oblong folio (image sizes approximately 19 x 24cm & slightly smaller), binding 30.8 x 38cm (12 x 15ins) Foxhill House formed part of the neighbouring King Edwards Place, a well known racing yard at the turn of the last century. Sir Gordon Richards (1904-1986) started his famous racing career here as a stable boy in 1919 (pictured on Kings Pirate in the album). In the same year that the yard's Ivanhoe (pictured in album) won the Cesarewitch race at Newmarket. Sir Gordon Richards was born in Shropshire and had 4,870 victories during his horse racing career. The most famous and well known horse from the Foxhill yard was Irish Elegance who won numerous races. (1)

Richmond Fox of Munby & Scott, Solicitors, 3 Blake Street, York, 14 July 1953, to Albert Pierrepoint, 303 Manchester Road, Hollinwood, near Manchester, concerning the sentence of death for Philip Henry, 'I shall be glad if you will attend the execution of the above-named on Thursday 30th July 1953 at Armley Gaol, Leeds, at the usual time. Would you kindly let me know as soon as possible that you can arrange this?', 1 page, oblong 4to, plus original typed envelope, postmarked the same day, plus a stapled contemporary photocopy bond appointing Albert Pierrepoint to act in the capacity of Executioner or Assistant Executioner, originally dated 11 January 1934, some old marginal damp stains, 3 single-sided leaves, folio Philip Henry was executed by hanging by Pierrepoint at Armley Gaol, Leeds, on 30 July 1953. He had been found guilty of the rape and murder of Flora Jane Gilligan of York in March 1953. (4)

Oriental Memoirs: Selected and Abridged from a Series of Familiar Letters Written During a Seventeen Year Residence in India: Including Observation on Parts of Africa and South America, and a Narrative of Occurrencies in Four India Voyages, 3 volumes (of four) only, 1813, half-titles present, engraved portrait to volume one, eighty-five plates (including twenty-four with fine contemporary hand colouring), some scattered spotting and damp staining (especially to volume two), lacking some initial and final blanks, contemporary calf, rubbed and worn, boards detached, 4to Abbey, Travel 436. James Forbes (1749-1819) spent the better part of twenty years in India: he is said to have filled 152 folio volumes, containing a total of 52,000 pages, with notes for this work. A re-issue, probably dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, of Van Dyck's famous Iconography, the plates without publisher's address or the initials G.H., only one plate with the publisher's name Jacobus de Man (Joannes Carolus della Faille). Hendricx erased the initials from the plates some time after 1660, allowing other publishers to make use of them, with new issues appearing subsequently from Brussels, Antwerp and Amsterdam. (1)
