Ɵ Euclid, Kitab Tahrir Usul li'Uqlidis (Elementorum Geometricorum), in Arabic recension by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, first printed edition, by the Medici Oriental Press (Typographia Medicea) [Rome, 1594] single volume, textually complete (paginated 1-400), title printed in Arabic and Latin, ornamental woodcut head- and tail-pieces, many woodcut geometrical diagrams and tables printed throughout, text framed within double-ruled border, first and final leaves with very skilfully repaired borders (neither affecting text) and a small repair to tiny hole on p. 397, some very faint scattered spotting to a few leaves, else exceptionally clean and near-fine condition, folio, 310 by 230 mm.; nineteenth-century grained russet morocco, covers with small diamond-shapes to centre in gilt, also ruled in gilt, spine gilt in compartments, a little scuffed, some soiling to bottom edge of lower board, else bright and attractive, paper labels pasted to spine with manuscript title and date of text inscribed in Arabic A fine copy of one of the "very earliest books printed in Arabic by means of moveable type" (Jones, p. 89), comprising perhaps the most important mathematical treatise in the Arabic language Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (d. 1274) was a celebrated Persian astronomer and polymath, best known for identifying geometry as an independent mathematical discipline, as well as for his translation of the definitive Arabic edition of Euclid's Elements. He was a prolific author and compiled a number of authoritative texts over a range of disciplines during his lifetime, however his legacy is firmly founded in this recension of Euclid's Elements - a text of such influence by the sixteenth century that it was among the very first works produced by the Medici Oriental Press. The output of the Medici Oriental Press, and its lavishly produced editions, each printed at substantial expense and under the patronage of Cardinal Ferdinando dei Medici, has been extensively studied by Robert Jones ('The Medici Oriental Press (Rome 1584-1614) And The Impact Of Its Arabic Publications On Northern Europe', in The 'Arabick' Interest of the Natural Philosophers in Seventeenth-Century England (1993).The work is one of only 7 texts printed by the press, printed after the Gospels (1590/1), two medieval Arabic tracts on grammar (1592), another on geography, and Ibn Sina's, Qanun fi al-Tibb (1593). It is thus, one of the earliest printed works in the Arabic language. The text was produced in three variants: that here with 400 pages, and others with an extra chapter covering a further 54 pages, often including an English title and a firman by Sultan Murad III.

Bilolium from a fine Mamluk Qur'an, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on buff paper [Mamluk Egypt or possibly Syria, thirteenth century] single bifolium, containing consecutive text from Surah al-Fajr 89:24 to the Surah al-Shams 91:6, single column, 6 lines of black naskh, two large gilt surah headings in kufic (close to Eastern kufic) script, 6 marginal decorations marking the important divisions throughout the text, each of these either teardrop or circular in shape, gilt and decorated with red and blue flourishes, verses marked with floral roundels throughout, leaves with margins trimmed, causing slight loss to marginal illumination, a little surface soiling, else clean condition, 194 by 295 mm. (each folio, c. 195 by 145 mm.) There are many stylistic similarities between the illumination of the present manuscript and Qur'ans illuminated by master illuminator Abu Bakr, also known as "Sandal". The famous Baybars al-Jashnagir Qur'an (British Library MS 59874) carries the Sandal attribution as well as a Qur'an illuminated by him in the Chester Beatty Library (see David James, Qur'ans of the Mamluks, London, 1988, cat. no.3).

Ɵ Two Qur'anic Juz', copied for Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Sheikh Qabilah Beni Yas, in Arabic, decorated manuscript on paper ["in the town of Al-Dhafra" probably from the north-western regions of the Arabian peninsula, dated Safar 1170 AH (1757 AD)]  single folio, containing two Juz' from the Qur'an, containing continuous text from Surah Yusuf (12: 53) to An-Nahl (16:128), complete, single column, 7 lines of black informal naskh, key words in red, vocalisation and diacritics in red and black, opening two sections of text within borders formed of overlapping circles forming geometric patterns, coloured in green, orange and yellow, verses marked by small yellow circles outlined in black and decorated with red dots, text-block framed within a double-ruling of red, some scattered foxing and staining, overall clean and presentable condition internally, 245 by 170 mm.; modern red morocco, with central blind-stamped medallion to covers, framed by geometric ruling, also in blind to covers, a little darkened in places The colophon of this two-Juz' volume explains that the text was copied for Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Sheikh Qabilah Beni Yas. This is a remarkably early reference to the Beni Yas tribal confederation, whose descendants from the leading six families currently form the United Arab Emirates. The Sheikh mentioned here is likely a member of the Al-Nahyan branch of the Beni Yas, who were residents of the al-Dhafra region before moving to Abu Dhabi in the eighteenth century. Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa Al Nahyan was the first ruler of the Liwa Oasis (Abu Dhabi Emarate) from 1761, and was known to have a Bahraini born cousin called Hazza of the Al Bu Falah family, this perhaps being the Sheik to which the present volume is dedicated. The informal calligraphy and use of bold decorations in this manuscript have influences from Eastern African and neighbouring Arabian regions. The circular devices are very reminiscent of sub-Saharan Qur'an illumination and the vivid colours likely an Indian influence as well as a North African one, with trade routes between South India, Eastern Arabia (Oman and Yemen) and North-Eastern Africa (Ethiopia and Sudan) well established by the eighteenth century. The lack of illumination, and use of yellow, is also common for this area, as gold manuscript illumination was not usual practice for the region.

Opus astrolabii, first and only edition, collation: [1-210], 19 of [20] leaves, lacking final blank leaf, text in single column, 40 lines, type: 1:101G, first page decorated with a five-line vinestem initial 'S', illuminated in red and blue on a silver background with extension in half the margin, 69 three-line initials alternately in red or blue, rubricated throughout, fol. [2]/8v one initial lost and a few words of text retouched in ink, portion of right side of final leaf missing and skilfully laid on an ancient leaf, on right side of text block words of 21 lines neatly supplied in brown ink, water-stain to lower right corner, heavier in last quire, not affecting the text apart from final two leaves, some other water-stains or spots, old repairs to penultimate leaf, 18th-century speckled boards, possibly recased, a tall copy, small folio (281 x 218 mm.), Ferrara, Johann Picardus, de Hamell, 1475.⁂ One of the earliest printed astronomical texts, and one of the rarest scientific incunables issued in Ferrara. Only ten copies of this edition are recorded in institutional libraries (four in Italy and two in the United States). The famous astronomer and traveller from Genoa, Andalo de Nigro, succeeded Cecco d'Ascoli to the chair in Florence and, in about 1330, became Giovanni Boccaccio's teacher. Geoffrey Chaucer (who, some seventy years later, wrote the first work in English on a scientific instrument - the Treatise on the Astrolabe - and was inspired by Boccaccio for his Canterbury Tales) may have known Andalo's Opus astrolabii through either the Genealogiae Deorum, which first appeared in 1472 or the De casibus virorum illustrium, printed in 1474-1475. In the latter, Boccaccio calls Andalo a 'venerable' man, and compliments him on his vast knowledge of the stars, gained 'by direct vision' during his travels around the world. In 1314 Andalo had been appointed ambassador to the Emperor of Trebisonda (Trabzon), and Giovanni Battista Ramusio, in his preface to the Viaggi di Messer Marco Polo (which opens the second volume of his Navigationi et viaggi of 1559), identified Andalo, not the Pisan Rustichello, as the prisoner to whom Marco Polo had dictated his memoirs. The Opus astrolabii was edited by the physician and astrologer Pietro Bono Avogario (d. 1506) who was active, as the colophon states, 'in foelici gymnasio ferrariensi', and it was printed by the Frenchman Jean Picard de Hamell who "is not known to have issued at Ferrara any book besides the Nigro" (BMC vi, 608). The first work takes historical naval battles as a basis for the study, including Lepanto (1571).

Ireland.- Account book, manuscript, 28pp. excluding blanks, reverse entries, a few ff. with remains of newspaper cuttings, browned, original vellum, rubbed and worn, folio, 1756-79.⁂ An account book for a large country house in Ireland identified from the manuscript as originating in the Corkbeg and Lisquinlan area in County Cork. Accounts include paying Horace Boate and later, David Bourke to teach music to his daughters, and for large quantities of cider, beer, poultry, beef etc..

18th century Navigation.- Navigation, manuscript, 174pp., partially ruled in red, 2 folding pen and ink maps hand-coloured in outline, numerous pen and ink diagrams, slightly browned, new endpapers, modern cloth, some edges slightly chipped, folio, dated in text and map at end 1791.⁂ A manual for teaching navigation. Headings include: "A Journal of a Voyage... In the Henry of Whitby... A.B. Commander... Kept by J. Breckon... November 17th 1791"; "Mercator's Sailing. The Construction & Use of the Meridional Parts"; "To work an Observation, or to find the Latitude of a Place by the Tables of the Sun, or Stars..."; "To find the Time of High Water"; "Construction of Mercator's Chart"; "Parallel Sailing" etc. Maps comprise: "A Mercator's Chart... Drawn by Joseph Wilson 1791"; "A Plane Chart" [showing the UK and Europe and its seas].

Darwin (Charles, naturalist, geologist, and originator of the theory of natural selection, 1809-82).- Rowlett (George, Royal Navy, purser on board The Beagle Voyage of 1831-36, 1797-1836).- [Last will and testament], engraved plate with manuscript insertions and signed "George Rowlett", engraved illustration of 2 ships at head, blind paper seal, folds, edges creased, folio, 30th November 1819.⁂ Rowlett's will signed and sealed as a 22 year old going to sea, with instructions to leave his worldly possessions to Mrs Lucy Sherrard, and that his body should be committed "to the Earth or Sea". Rowlett was ship's purser on The Beagle and at 38 was the oldest officer on board. He died on 27 June 1834 at 2pm, "he had for some time been sinking under a complication of diseases" (Darwin), and his body was buried at sea, some 40 miles off the north of the Island of Chiloé.

Tichborne Claimant.- [Orton (Arthur, perjuror, sentenced to prison, claimed to be Sir Roger Tichborne, of Tichborne Park, Alresford, Hampshire, 1834-98)] Archive of letters and printed works relating to the "Tichborne Claimant", including: (1). 9 Autograph Letters signed "R.C.D. Tichborne" to his legal counsel Edward Kenealy, together 34pp., 8vo, 16th April - 19th November 1873, relating to his trial for perjury, "The small slip of paper I gave you this evening was thrown into my Carriage last evening with some printed letters. Mrs Skipworth was with me at the time, but I did not open the parcel until late last night - there were several printed letters with it. I saw Gibbes of Wagga Wagga [where Orton had worked as a butcher calling himself Tomas Castro] as I left the Court but of course I did not speak to him. I am much pleased with the able manner you handled those two witnesses today, you certainly did all you could, considering that such people use every subterfuge to gain their mean ends - they do not even hesitate to belie a dead Benefactress", and an endorsement of his strategy at court, "I leave my case entirely in your hands for you to conduct to the best of your ability. I have every confidence in your judgement and I trust you will not alter your plans"; (2). Tichborne Estate. Mortgage Debenture 1871, issued by Arthur Orton to raise money for his claim, printed form signed R.C.D. Tichborne, mounted, folio, 1871; and 7 other pieces of printed matter and a folder of printed ephemera (7 pieces) on the Tichborne Claimant, including: (3). The Englishman, weekly newspaper edited by Edward Kenealy, 2 vol., nos. 1-27 & nos. 28-52, contemporary half calf, rubbed, 1874-75; (4). Lord Nugent. Ye Dole of Tichborne, second edition, illustrations by V.H. Darwin, browned, ink ownership inscription at head of title, hinges breaking, original cloth, gilt, 1871, v.s., v.d. (c. 23).⁂ Edward Kenealy (1819-80), barrister and writer; famous for his intemperate language as leading counsel for the Tichborne Claimant. In the course of his defence he employed groundless accusations against both the Catholic Church and the witnesses and after the trial was largely ostracised by the legal profession.

Hardinges ansvveare: by perusinge whereof the discrete, and diligent reader may easily see, the weake, and vnstable groundes of the Romaine religion, whiche of late hath beene accompted Catholique, first edition, Sir Thomas Heneage's copy, mostly black letter, woodcut decorative initials and tail-pieces, final f. blank, Ee1 small section of upper corner torn away, just touching a printed side-note, occasional staining, mostly marginal, occasional spotting, 17th century calf, covers with double gilt filet borders, spine in compartments with double gilt filet borders and a red morocco label, joints splitting, but holding firm, corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, [STC 14606], small folio, in Fleetestreate, at the signe of the Blacke Oliphante, by Henry VVykes, 1565.⁂ Provenance: Sir Thomas Heneage (1532-1595), courtier of Elizabeth I, who held the post of Vice-Chamberlain of the Household and in 1590 became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. It is said that Elizabeth flirted with him, making her favourite Robert Dudley jealous. (ink signature to head of title (trimmed with loss)); Bernard Quaritch (collated complete pencil note at end).

The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romanes, Compared together by that Grave Learned Philosopher and Historiographer, Plutarke of Chaeronea, translated by Thomas North from the French of Jean Amiot, title with large metalcut printer's device, woodcut medallion portraits of the subjects within cartouches of different designs, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, lacking initial blank, title torn with some loss to lower corner and laid down, *2 repaired at foot, final f. creased, water-stained at foot, occasional staining or spotting elsewhere, the majority of a contemporary panelled calf gilt binding laid down on modern calf, arabesque centre-pieces within two sets of filet borders, one set with foliage corner-pieces, spine in compartments foliage decorations, some loss of leather, rubbed, [STC 20067; cf. Pforzheimer 801], folio, Richard Field for Bonham Norton, 1595. ⁂ Scarce second North edition of Plutarch's Parallel Lives, which 'forms the major source for the plots of Shakespeare's classical plays as well as suggestions for numerous passages in the non-Roman ones. . .some hints of A Midsummer Night's Dream are clearly derived from the Life of Theseus' (Pforzheimer).

Canada & Germany.- Gardiner (General Sir Henry Lynedoch, KCVO, CB, general in the Royal Artillery, served on the Royal Commission for the Defence of Canada in 1861, son of General Sir Robert Gardiner, equerry to Queen Victoria 1872-96, 1820-97) 62 Autograph Letters to his parents and brother, all but three signed, c. 550pp., folio, 4to & 8vo, Montreal, Gotha, Rotterdam, Amerbach and elsewhere, 1838 - 41 & n.d., extensive correspondence with his family, including: Canada: "The feeling among the [French] Canadians is worse than ever, I hear & it is well known that they drill in the mountains frequently. Ld Durham's return makes the ministers more than ever unpopular with the royalists. It was only the other night that they burnt Lords Melbourne, Glenly & Brougham in effigy after having dragged them through the streets in donkey carts, but as they at the same time burnt Hume & one or two of the rebel chiefs, an attack was expected from the Canadian rebels..."; Europe: [Germany] "We started... for Reinhartsbrunn - Hence into the Thuringer Wald... . We arrived at Fusterherzen... without fatigue, as I had varied my amusement from giving my arm to the young ladies to carrying Master Carl on my back: having seen them in safety at the village, I began to be rather alarmed at the non arrival of the other good people, and accordingly put myself in a regimental double, and trotted back alone four miles to Spiessherz on whose summit stands a hut, which had been agreed on as a rendevous; - having climbed the mountain and entered the hut, I found that the party had been there & had left it half an hour before... on my arrival... found the whole party there... . The ass of a guide, whom Ewald had hired had led them a wrong way...", some letters marked "Copy" in pencil, folds, browned; and a small quantity others including an ALs from Robert Gardiner to his son, v.s., v.d. (qty).

Shakespeare (William) The Life of King Henry the Fift, from the Second Folio, 28 pp., numbered 69-96, double column, woodcut head-piece and decorative initial, the verso of the final f. has the opening of The First Part of King Henry the Sixt, some staining, lightly browned, modern red boards, printed label to upper cover, folio (317 x 205mm.), [Printed by Thomas Cotes], 1632.⁂ Includes one of Shakespeare's most famous and oft-repeated lines (Act 2, scene 1) "Once more unto the Breach, Deare friends, once more; Or close the Wall up with our English dead" and the King's final rallying "Cry, God for Harry, England, and S. George."
