HAMMARSKJÖLD HJALMAR: (1862-1953) Swedish politician and Scholar. Prime Minister of Sweden 1914-17. Chairman of the Nobel Foundation 1929-47. Autograph Statement Signed, H.L. Hammarskjöld, one page, folio, n.p., n.d., in Spanish, French and Latin. Hammarskjold first transcribes a popular Spanish song, `Do not call the Fortune, - you cannot order it - and it never comes - where it is called´ and further states in French `Substitute "Peace" for "Fortune" and you will understand that there are people who love peace, but stay far from pacifism. It is not the name which matters, but rather the reality, and peace could not be an immediate and independent goal, but an outcome.´ and concludes with a statement in Latin `If you want peace, prepare justice.´ A good and clean statement. EX £80-100 The statement was prepared for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on Peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.

GEORGE V & CHURCHILL: GEORGE V (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36 & CHURCHILL WINSTON S. (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. An unusual D.S. by both King George V ('George R.I.', as King, at the head) and Winston S. Churchill ('Winston S. Churchill', as Home Secretary, at the conclusion), three pages, folio, Court at Saint James's, 15th July 1911. The partially printed document is a Licence issued to Albert Cherry, Manager of the Central Railway at Venezuela, allowing him to accept and wear the Insignia of the Third Class of the Order of the Bust of Bolivar which had been conferred on Cherry by the President of the United States of Venezuela 'in recognition of valuable services rendered'. With a blind embossed seal. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG £600-800

ABDELKADER IBN MUHIEDDINE: (1808-1883) Algerian Religious and Military Leader “Sharif”. Abdelkader led the struggle against the French colonial invasion. D.S., The Loyal Abdelkader Al-Hosni, one page, folio, n.p., 1273, to an unknown recipient, in Arabic. Abdelkader sends his best regards to his correspondent and states in part `I have received your kind letter. Your explanation is clear enough, but even so, I would ask you to leave this matter related to the sheep aside, and same with all related to this affair…´ The document bears underneath Abdekader´s name a contemporary ink stamp. VG £400-600 The year 1273 in the Muslim Calendar corresponds to 1856.  Abdelkader´s regard for what would now be called human rights, including his Christian opponents, drew widespread admiration. His crucial intervention to save the Christian community of Damascus from a massacre in 1860 brought honours and awards from around the world. Within Algeria, his efforts to unite the country, and his ability to combine religious and political authority led him to be acclaimed as the `Saint among the Princes, the Prince among the Saints´.

ALEXANDER II: (1818-1881) Emperor of Russia 1855-81. Assassinated. A good D.S., Alexander, three pages, folio, Kissingen, 28th June 1857, to King Ferdinand II, in Cyrillic. Alexander II as Emperor and Autocrat of all Russias congratulates his correspondent stating `With great pleasure we have learned by Your Majesty´s letter that your sister in law, Her Royal Highness Countess Trapani, gave birth to the Prince.´ and further continues `We cordially wish that the newborn Prince and his mother enjoy the desired happiness..´ Countersigned to the bottom of the third page, beneath the Tsar´s signature, by Minister of Foreign Affairs Gorchakov. Accompanied by the original envelope, addressed to King Ferdinand II, with an extensive presentation in Cyrillic, and bearing a large paper seal affixed. Extremely small tear to the edge of the last page, not affecting the text or signature, and paper loss to the envelope as a result of the opening, otherwise VG £1000-1500 The present letter is written from Kissingen, Germany, where Alexander II went in 1857 accompanied by his foreign Minister Gorchakov, planning to meet Napoleon III, and where Kiselev was summoned to discuss the emancipation and serfs freedom law plan.  Ferdinand II (1810-1859) King of the Two Sicilies 1830-59. He succeeded his father Francis I at the early age of twenty.  Prince Francis of the Two Sicilies (1827-1892) Count of Trapani. Younger brother of King Ferdinand II. He married his niece in 1850, Archduchess Maria Isabella of Austria (1834-1901) Countess of Trapani. She gave birth in May 1857 to Prince Ferdinando of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, who will die two years after.  Alexander Gorchakov (1798-1883) Russian Statesman, one of the most influential and respected Diplomats of the nineteenth century. Chancellor of the Russian Empire 1863-83.

WAYNE JOHN: (1907-1979) American Actor, Academy Award winner. A large folio printed cover for a menu from Maxim's restaurant in the Sony Building, Tokyo, featuring a typically Belle Epoque printed colour image of diners and waiters by the French caricaturist Georges Goursat (Sem), signed and inscribed by Wayne in black ink to the verso, 'Eddie, Good Luck, John Wayne' and dated 23rd March 1974 in another hand, and again signed and inscribed by Wayne in black ink to the recto, 'Ed - Day after tomorrow, Good Luck, again, John Wayne' and dated 25th March 1974 in another hand. A third signature and inscription by Wayne appears at the head of the recto, although was written with a pen running out of ink and is barely visible. The menu also bears a few other signatures by other individuals including the opera singer Anna Moffo, most dated between 1972-74. Some areas of light staining and some age wear, largely at the folds, G £150-200

COLTRANE JOHN: (1926-1967) American Saxophonist and Composer. An influential jazz musician figure. Autograph Musical Manuscript, unsigned, two pages, folio, n.p., n.d., in pencil. The manuscript comprises two musical quotations in Coltrane´s hand. To the front page, the first quote of three bars, on two staves, and the second of nine bars on two staves also. Coltrane has added some dynamics and musical notes at various points in the piece. To the verso a few series of draft musical notes, and to the heading few small annotations with letter notes and arrows. Coltrane died at the early age of fourty one. Irregularly torn at the base and to the left bottom corner, with some light creasing, about G £200-300

HONEGGER ARTHUR: (1892-1955) Swiss Composer, a member of Les Six. An original signed autograph musical manuscript (`A.Honegger´), one page, oblong folio, n.p., January 1954. The manuscript in the hand of Honegger is entitled and underlined in red `Eine Weihnach Kantate´, (Christmas Cantata) by the German Composer, who has carefully penned a 21 bars on two staves musical quote. Honegger has added some dynamics, some musical choir voices text, etc.. at various points in the piece (`Eine Kinderstimme., Baritono solo., Adagio., Chor., Gloria in excel-sis De.o.´). A bold black fountain pen ink manuscript with long inscription in German (`To Dr. Willy Schuh, with my best regards and thanks for the many and good words dedicated to me, with my sincere friendhip, A. Honegger - January 54´). Some very small overall age wear, and an extremely small tear to the lower edge not affecting any word or quote. Scarce. VG £400-600

DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish Surrealist Painter. A very good A.L.S., Salvador Dali, an excellent signature example, one page, folio, lined paper, n.p., 1943, to an unidentified friend, in French. To the head of the letter Dali has drawn a sketch of a sun shining, he writes in a French full of spelling mistakes, and states `My very dear friend, I am sorry to say that I do not have time to work on your drawing, I am late with my novel, and I can´t spend time in anything else now.´ further saying `As I told you, I have already made a Spanish ballet, therefore we will have to look for something different..´ Dali then suggests `I would be ready to create a sensational decor and at the same time very simple for a work organized by Nijinska, who has a great choreographic talent.´ and further and before concluding `Naturally ancient music, the more classical the best, VERY VERY SHORT, BUT PERFECT´. Dali adds beneath his signature the year 1943 in his hand. A bold and in full large signature example. Very small ink stain to the last word of his name, and extremely small creasing, otherwise VG £2500-3500 Bronislava Nijinska (1891-1972) Polish Dancer and Choreographer. A pioneer in the change from classicism to neo-classicism.

MARSHALS OF FRANCE: Two attractive Ls.S., by two French Marshals of the former period before revolution, being Guy Michel de Durfort (1704-1773) Duke of Randan, Marshal of France. L.S., The Duke of Randan, two pages, Folio, Besançon, 6th October 1755, in French. The partially printed document, bearing a large coat of arms at the heading is a military order given to the infantry regiment of Alsace, instructing them to depart and where to go, explaining the route to follow. The document bears to the verso in multiple different hands, numerous annotations, countersigned, reporting on each arrival and departure station; Louis César Le Tellier (1695-1771) Duke d´Estrée, Marshal of France. L.S., L.C Destrées, two pages, folio, Caen, 28th August 1756, in French. The partially printed document, bearing two large coats of arms, his own one and the French army one, is a military order given to two regiments. Carefully annotated to the verso the number of officers and horses comprising the regiment. Very small overall age wear and few minor stains, otherwise VG, 2 £100-120

Maurice Talleyrand, one page, folio, Paris, 7th June 1799, on the printed stationery of the Naval and colonies Minister, to widow Nouette, in French. Talleyrand, in his capacity as Minister of Foreign affairs, and on behalf of the Naval and Colonies Minister, refers to the letter received by Mr. Nouette´s widow requesting a certificate proving the number of years that her husband did work as General Treasurer of the Naval invalids and that he did fulfil his tasks till his death, stating `You will find enclosed the certificate requested, according to your demand, containing the reference to the accountings deposited at the Naval 6th division department..´ Small overall age wear and staining, and a fold at the base of the document, otherwise G £150-200

TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD CHARLES MAURICE DE: (1754-1838) French Diplomat and Statesman. Prime Minister of France July-September 1815. L.S., Ch. Maurice Talleyrand, one page, folio, Paris, 29th November 1802, on the printed stationery of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the Minister of Interior Affairs, in French. Talleyrand, in his capacity as Minister of Foreign affairs, states `Citizen Minister, the Citizen Vianelli, commissioner to the commercial relationships at Port Mauritius, announces that the ship Viuté de la Ciotat, commanded by Jean François Abeille, with signboard not properly maintained, has arrived to Port Mauritius with flour load taken from Marseille with a value of fifteen thousand francs approximately..´ With integral address leaf, bearing a red wax seal in two pieces. Small area of paper loss to the address leaf as a result of the opening, not affecting the text or signature. Folded. VG £250-350 Jean-Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832) French Doctor, Chemist and Politician. Appointed by Napoleon I Minister of Interior 1800-04.

L.S., M.al Duc de Dalmatie, one page, 4to, Paris, 5th October 1831, on the war Minister printed stationery, to M. Dufour, in French. Soult responds to former Commandant Dufour´s request about past salaries dues and pension. With blank integral leaf. Few very small tears to the folds; OUDINOT NICOLAS (1767-1847) Marshal of France. Duc de Reggio. L.S., Le Ml Duc de reggio, one page, folio, Paris, 26th June 1811, to Count of Montesquieu, in French. Oudinot strongly recommends his `friend and compatriot, and deputy of his department´ to be awarded with the Legion d´Honneur. With blank integral leaf; CLARKE HENRI JACQUES GUILLAUME (1765-1818) Marshal of France in 1816, one of six created under King Louis XVIII from 1815-24. Duc de Feltre and Minister of War under Napoleon. L.S., Duc de Feltre, one page, folio, Paris, 2nd December 1813, on the war Minister printed stationery, to Lieutenant Conrade, in French. The partially printed document is the announcement of a decree given by the Emperor, appointing Conrade as Captain. With blank integral leaf. G, 3 £100-120

MARSHALS OF NAPOLEON: Two A.Ls.S., by two of the most awarded French Empire Marshals, serving first in the French revolutionary wars and later in the Napoleonic wars, comprising KELLERMANN FRANÇOIS CHRISTOPHE (1735-1820) Marshal of France, Duc de Valmy. A.L.S., Kellermann, one page, folio, Mayence, 31st July 1807, to the Prince of Neuchatel, in French. Kellermann kindly asks his correspondent to authorize a brave officer, General Brigadier Picard, to go to Paris as he has important personal matters to sort out; AUGEREAU CHARLES PIERRE FRANÇOIS (1757-1816) Marshal of France, Duc de Castiglione. A.L.S., Augereau, two pages, 4to, Bromberg, 26th September 1806, to Marshal Perignon, in French. Augereau refers to the future appointments of the legislative corps by the Senate, and kindly asks his correspondent to accept his personal recommendation on Emile Dupré. A bold ink signature. The first letter being in very good condition, the second with overall, minor age wear and edges trimmed and damaged, although not affecting the signature. Accompanied by Julie Vosch van Avesaat, second wife of Marshal Victor. A.L.S., W.J. Victor, born Vosch d´Avesaat, two pages, 4to, Berlin, 6th June 1807, to M. Desaugier, Copenhagen, in French. Mrs. Victor sends his deep gratitude on behalf of her husband and herself for the many attentions received from her correspondent. With integral address leaf bearing remnants of a red wax seal; BERTHIER LOUIS-ALEXANDRE (1753-1815) Marshal of France, Prince of Wagram and Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. L.S., Ml Berthier, one page, folio, Paris, 1st March 1805, on the Minister of war printed stationery, to the Prefect of Bruges, in French. A.L.S., Le Duc de Raguse, three pages, 8vo, Amsterdam, 15th September 1830, to Countess of Nansouty, in French. Marmont states `I will remain here for a while, and after will start again with my caravans, sad travelling, hard and difficult to undertake with my age after so many other acclaimed campaigns.´ further saying `You who have always lived surrounded by your family members and in prosperity do not imagine the grief that I feel in exile and in misfortune remembering friends.´ A good letter content. With remnants of red wax seal to the address leaf; GOUVION SAINT-CYR LAURENT DE (1764-1830) Marshal of France, Marquis de Gouvion Saint-Cyr. L.S., Gouvion St Cyr, one page, folio, Paris, 11th March 1819, to Lieutenant Fribourg, in French. The partially printed document, signed by Gouvion St. Cyr in his capacity as Minister of State, is an appointment given by the King to Fribourg as Captain; MORTIER EDOUARD (1768-1835) Marshal of France, Duc de Treviso. Prime Minister of France 1834-35. D.S., Ed. Mortier, one page, oblong folio, Paris, 7th December 1800, to citizen Chebroux, in French. The partially printed document being a title given to Chebroux. MURAT JOACHIM: (1767-1815) Marshal of France, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte. King of Naples 1808-15. L.S., J Napoleone, one page, folio, Naples, 15th September 1811, in Italian. The partially printed document bearing the heading of "Gioacchino Napoleone, King of the Two Sicilies", is a decree containing three articles approved and based on the report given by the Minister of Interior. The decree refers to municipality of San Nicandro, to taxes and amounts corresponding to the previous year 1812. With a very small area of paper loss to the left border not affecting the text or signature, and two small tears to the edges, otherwise VG £100-150

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. N.S., Napoleon, to the left margin of a D.S. by several officers, one page, folio, Camp de Boulogne, 20th July 1804, in French. The partially printed document from the 14th Regiment of Infantry Administration Council at the camp de Boulogne is a letter addressed to the Emperor stating `To His Majesty Napoleon First Emperor of the French´, and states `We have the honour to present to you the losses that our Officers did suffer on 2nd July 1899, at the Ceva affair in the Piedmont´, further saying `The total destitution they lived at that time made them suffer all kind of privation situations since then. We are at today´s date their representatives to you, and therefore kindly ask on their behalf your authorization to receive a compensation, that only the misfortune of your absence has made impossible to sort out earlier attending their needs.´ To the left margin, annotated in the Emperor´s personal secretary Hugues Maret´s hand `Returned to the Minister of War to make a report on the losses had by this regiment. At the Pont de Brique, 25th July 1804´. Signed below by Napoleon with his full name. The document is signed by General Rouelle, Colonel Mazas, Chiefs of Batalions Blanc and Stahl, and few more officers. An excellent document, signed in full by Napoleon. With blank integral leaf. Bearing a contemporary stamp from the personal secretary of the war Minister. Small overall, minor age wearing, with several small tears and creasing to the edges, none affecting the texts or signatures. VG £1000-1500 The present letter is dated 20th July 1804 and addressed to Napoleon as First Emperor of the French. Napoleon was enthroned only two months earlier on 18th May 1804. The Pont de Brique Castle was the Headquarter of Napoléon from 1803 to 1805 with a view to the invasion of England.  Pierre Michel Rouelle (1770-1833) French General, and Jean François Stahl ( - 1809) Chief of Batalion, both served at the Camp de Boulogne, and fought at Austerlitz, Saragosse and Tarragone.  Jean François Mazas (1765-1805) French Colonel.  Hugues Bernard Maret (1763-1839) French Politician and Diplomat. Minister of Foreign affairs 1811-13 and President of the Ministers Council 1834.

ALFONSO XIII: (1886-1941) King of Spain 1886-1931. An excellent Autograph Statement Signed, Alfonso R., one page, 4to, Fontainebleau, 1931, in French. King Alfonso states in full `Peace is a magnificent ideal, but in order to achieve it, all nations must set aside their questions of pride and work for it in good faith´. The document has been neatly affixed to a large album folio. EX £200-300 The present statement was written by King Alfonso XIII short after leaving Spain to never return. He went in exile in April 1931, when the Second Republic was proclaimed in Spain, first going to Paris.  The statement was prepared for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on Peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. CHARLES EMMANUEL III: (1701-1773) King of Sardinia 1730-1773 and Duke of Savoy. L.S., (`Buon Fratello di V.M - Emanuele´), one page, folio, Turin, 4th July 1741, to the King Charles III of Spain and of the Two Sicilies, in Italian. The King of Sardinia sends a sad message reporting on his wife´s death, the Queen consort of Sardinia. Charles Emmanuel expresses his sorrow, and explains how a very high fever after giving birth to a Prince, their third child, was the reason of his wife´s death. Queen Elisabeth was the third wife of Charles Emmanuel, the two previous Queens also died at the very early ages of nineteen and twenty-eight, the first also during childbirth. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope bearing an attractive paper seal affixed to the verso. VG £80-100 Charles III (1716-1788) King of Spain 1759-1788, and King of Naples and Sicily 1734-59.  Elisabeth Therese of Lorraine (1711-1741) Princess of Lorraine and Queen consort of Sardinia. Third wife of Charles Emmanuel III. The Queen died at the very early age of 29 when giving birth to her son Benedetto of Savoy (1741-1808)

CHARLES EMMANUEL IV: (1751-1819) King of Sardinia 1796-1802. L.S., (`Buon Fratello e Cusino di V.M - Emmanuele´), one page, folio, Naples, 10th December 1801, to the King of the Two Sicilies, in Italian. The King refers to the letter received from his correspondent, dated 22nd November, and states `Your letter awakened again the deep sorrow that the death of H.M. The Archduchess of Austria and Crown Princess of the Two Sicilies, Maria Clementina, your daughter in law, meant to me.´ Charles Emmanuel further mentions the virtues of the Royal Princess which he could appreciate in person. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope bearing a black wax seal to the verso. VG £80-100 Ferdinand I (1751-1825) King of the Two Sicilies 1816-25, after his restoration following victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Before that he had been, since 1759 Ferdinand III of the Kingdom of Sicily and Ferdinand IV of Naples. .  Maria Clementina of Austria (1777-1801) Austrian Archduchess, daughter of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Luisa of Spain. She married the Hereditary Prince Francis of Naples (1777-1830), heir of Naples and Sicily and future King of the Two Sicilies 1825-30. She died of tuberculosis, at the early age of twenty four on 15th November 1801.
