* West Indies Trade. Manuscript report by Andrew Symmer, King's agent for the Turks Islands, circa 1767, 2 pp., old fold, paperclip residue mark, one or two closed tears, a little light soiling, 4to, together with: Trade Treaty with the Duchy of Savoy. Manuscript titled 'A Project or Draught of Articles of Commerce with his R.H. esse of Savoy', for Sir William Morice (1628-1690, Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1660-1668) circa 1661, 8 pp., a few corrections in another hand, old folds and small closed tears, light dust soiling, folio (Qty: 2)NOTESFirst manuscript is written by the newly appointed King's agent for the Turks Islands on the dislocation of trade caused by the British government closing West Indies ports to French and Spanish ships. He argues this policy is damaging British colonies who rely on the trade of supplying these vessels and fears that this trade will go to the Dutch colonies as a result. He suggests allowing some ports to trade with ships only of a certain tonnage and sets out the costs and requirements of constructing a fort in the colony; the second manuscript is addressed 'For the Right Honble Sir William Morice Knt & Bart His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State', and sets out 16 articles as the basis of negotiation of a trade treaty with His Royal Highness of the Duchy of Savoy. The document appears to have been hastily written, with ammendments in a different hand would indicate that this was the final draft for use of the negotiators. The Duchy of Savoy was an important Palatinate covering what is today part of South East France and North West Italy, including Turin and the port of Nice.
