First published in the Strand Magazine in 1928 and later published in book form in The Maracot Deep and Other Stories John Murray [1929]. There are a few textual changes in this manuscript the story is titled “The Story of Pedegue`s Dropper” and Richard Lancelyn Green in his letter notes that “it is curious that Sir Arthur ceased numbering the pages after 20 & spelt Sydney `Sidney`“. “`The Story of Spedegue`s Dropper` was based on the author`s own experience when bowled by a most extraordinary ball from A.P. Lucas. It was propelled into the air to about thirty feet and then fell onto the top of the bails. It was an experience which also gave him the idea for high-angle fire so that the bullets might enter enemy trenches.” - Green & Gibson. The document to the Principal Officers and Commissioners of the Navy, ordering them to enter George Wingreene as Master Cook of the Fireship “Anne & Christopher”. (Mounted on a further sheet of paper, some spotting.) Framed and glazed within a pierced gilt composition section (faults). Provenance: purchased as lot 224 at Sotheby & Co in their sale of Valuable Printed Books, Autograph Letters, Historical Documents and a Russian Manuscript on 24th June 1975, by the father of the current vendor (details verso).

Limited edition of 1500 copies, this number 1090 signed by the illustrator, folio (285 x 200mm.) 13 etched plates, etched illustrations, all by Ruth Reeves. (Some offsetting.) Original sheep, the upper cover with gilt embossed medallion, t.e.g. (slightly scuffed). Original cloth slip-case. – And one other illustrated work (2).
