Photography.- Fox Talbot (William Henry) A group of nine salt prints from paper negatives, seven by Talbot, one attributed to him and one from his circle, varying tones from very pale to good, edge-mounted within single-line borders on contemporary card leaves, each 248 x 310 mm. (9 ¾ x 12 ¼ in.), four with contemporary titles in ink (3) and pencil (1) at foot, each priced in pencil at top right corner of mount, various printed labels on versos, loose in a contemporary portfolio with ties, upper cover with a mounted landscape aquatint, small folio, c.1841-1845 The pencil prices are in the style used by Nicholaas Henneman at Reading and later at London, and are attributed to him. The manuscript titles on four mounts are typical of Talbot's and may be in his hand. In the following list of subjects, references are to Professor Larry J. Attributed here to Talbot but possibly by either Richard Calvert Jones or Nicholaas Henneman all three of whom visited the city together in July 1845. 9 "The Chess Players" (printed title label numbered 35 on verso), c.1845 215 x 155 mm. Herbal.- Gerard (John) The Herball, first edition, engraved title worn and laid down, numerous woodcut illustrations, lacking portrait and final leaf, leaves at beginning repaired and remargined with occasional loss of text, 4T3 woodcut cut out and replaced with new paper, a few woodcuts hand-coloured by an early hand, some staining and soiling, ink annotations from contemporary to 19th century, modern mottled calf, [STC 11750; Nissen 698; Henrey 154; Hunt 174], folio, 1597. ⁂ A well-loved and utilised copy of one of the great early herbals.
Birds.- Willughby (Francis) The Ornithology, first English edition, title in red and black, 80 engraved plates and 2 tables, some ink annotations, contemporary panelled calf with unusual zig-zag mottling to pale panel, extremities and joints worn, rubbed, [Wing W2880; Nissen 991; Anker 532; Wood p.629; Zimmer p.677], folio, by A. C. for John Martyn, 1678. ⁂ Greatly expanded version of Willughby's 1676 Latin text by John Ray, which includes essays on falconry and songbirds as well as additional plates. The ink annotations, in a19th century hand, give additional information on birds and on pp.361-363 give an account of a Canada Goose which befriended a dog, probably as a result of the "dog's having accidentally saved the goose from a fox."
Birds.- Hancock (John) A Fasciculus of Eight Drawings on Stone of Groups of Birds, first edition, lithograph title (torn and loose) and 8 plates, 2pp. list of subscribers at end, foxed throughout, original lithograph printed wrappers, sewn as issued, spotted and soiled, [Nissen 408; Fine Bird Books, p.80; not in Anker, Wood or Zimmer], folio, Newcastle upon Tyne, Published by the Author, 1853. ⁂ Original subscriber's copy - the name of John Wolley appearing in the list at the end alongside many from Newcastle and the surrounding area. Five of the plates are of birds of prey with one, curiously, showing a Leopard cub reposing!
Butterflies.- Doubleday (Edward) and John O. Westwood. The Genera of Diurnal Lepidoptera, 2 vol., first edition, 86 lithograph plates by William C. Hewitson, all but one hand-coloured, minor occasional foxing, contemporary green morocco, elaborately stamped in gilt, spines gilt in compartments but faded, folio, 1846-52. ⁂ A superb set of Doubleday's 'most ambitious work' (ODNB). Left unfinished at the author's early death, it was finally completed by Westwood in 1852.
Raphael.- Burnet (John, 1784-1868) The Cartoons of Raffaelle, from the Originals in Hampton Court Palace, complete with text leaf, seven mixed-method etchings and engravings, with original hand-colouring, on thick cream wove paper, platemarks approx. 520 x 785 mm. (20 1/2 x 30 7/8 in), each sheet approx. 600 x 875 mm. (23 1/2 x 34 1/2 in), occasional spotting and surface dirt, in original letterpress printed wrappers, oblong elephant folio, published by D. Bogue [circa 1838-1850]; together with five further duplicates, un-coloured, mixed-method etchings and engravings, on thick cream wove paper, platemarks approx. 520 x 785 mm. (20 1/2 x 30 7/8 in), each sheet approx. 600 x 875 mm. (23 1/2 x 34 1/2 in), occasional spotting and surface dirt, unframed, [circa 1838-1850]; and with two others including Jentzen's 'Die Kunste Am Brunnen Der Poesie' after Bendemann, and with the lithograph 'Das Schulexamen' by Mittag after Hasenclever, various sizes, 19th century, (Qty.).
America.- Johnston (Alexander Keith) The National Atlas of Historical, Commercial, and Political Geography, first edition, engraved title, 46 double-page engraved maps, hand-coloured in wash or outline, occasional foxing, finger-tabs to fore-edge, contemporary half calf, rubbed, upper joint split, g.e., folio, Edinburgh etc, 1844. ⁂ Includes five maps of Australasia with one separate and detailed map of Van Diemen's Land. Two of the American maps show Texas as an independent country.
