Border Counties Railway. Copy Minute Book of the meetings of the board of the Border Counties Railway from its inception 14th January 1854. until April 10th 1855, 59pp. of manuscript minutes written in a secretarial hand, contemp. qtr. roan, folio The Border Counties starting at a junction with the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway at Hexham was originally an enterprise promoted by W.H. Charlton of Hesleyside who aimed to take advantage of the Plashetts coalfield south of the border, and to connect with the North British Railway at Hawick to open up the Lowland Scottish Manufacturing area. The venture was taken over by the North British Railway in 1855. This volume covers the original planning of the railway, its inception, prospectus raising share capital, progress of the Act through Parliament, surveys, tenders, right up to the appointment of contractors for the first stage from Hexham to Bellingham and on to Belling (now Falstone). This volume would appear to have belonged to one of the directors who ceased to have an interest when the project was taken over by the North British Railway. The line was opened in 1862. and closed to passenger service in 1956. (1)

Fox (Charles James, 1749 1806, Statesman). Autograph letter signed ('C. J. Fox'), St. James's, 29th March 1782, to Sir William Hamilton, notifying him of Fox's appointment as foreign secretary and 'I am to desire that you will for the future address your Letters to me, which I shall not fail to lay regularly before the King, and to transmit to you such Orders and Instructions as His Majesty shall think proper to give for your Guidance and Direction', sl. browning, one page with integral blank, folio, loosely contained in purpose made qtr. morocco gilt folder and slipcase Fox had been instrumental in the orchestration of the fall of North's Government in March 1782. and on 25th March had been appointed Foreign Secretary in a Ministry that was jointly led by Rockingham and Shelburne 'From the start it was an unhappy experience and, although it was Rockingham's sudden death in July that formally dissolved the experiment, it was a Ministry dead in all but name long before that. Fox believed that George III had engineered its demise. He had used Thurlow, the lord chancellor, as a royal spy in the cabinet. More seriously, he had encouraged Shelburne to thwart Rockinghamite initiatives at every turn', DNB. (1)
