American War of Independence seven complete volumes of the Journals of the House of Lords covering the years 1765 –1787 carrying the verbatim proceedings in the House of Lords for every government measure both national and international during that period. This period was of course dominated by the events in America leading to the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the subsequent American Revolutionary War leading to the birth of the USA. These volumes which were published contemporaneously contain the verbatim information as it unfolded in the House of Lords with in many instances the actual speeches of the King and the Peers during these momentous events. The period covered by the volumes date from the introduction of the Stamp Acts through to the period when Britain finally recognised her former American colonies as an independent state. As such they provide scholars of the American War of Independence an unrivalled primary source of information on the day to day progress of events. There is for example the declaration in May 1773 of the measures on the exportation of Tea to the American colonies which led in December of that year to the famous ‘Boston Tea Party’. There is also the Quartering Act of 1765 which required the billeting of British troops and which led to rioting in New York. The actual Declaration of Independence was signed when the British Parliament had been prorogued but immediate reference to it is made in the speech of George III on the State Opening of Parliament on October 13th 1776. The Journals continue with many references to the on-going war in America such as listings of new troops lists of prizes taken and in 1782 there is a resolution: ‘...that this House will resolve itself into a committee of the whole House to enquire into the causes of the great loss which the nation has sustained by the surrender of the whole Army under the command of Lt Gen Earl Cornwallis at York Town and Gloucester in the Province of Virginia as Prisoners of War...’ Each volume is elephant folio in size and unbound. Pagination ranges from 602 to 820pp per volume. These journals had a very limited print run being produced in an edition originally intended for distribution to national and local archives. This was never carried out and as such the present volumes are extremely rare.
Palestine – the murder of the two British Intelligence Officers highly important original typed document being the statement of 5826986 SSM Radcliffe Royal Engineers 1.5 pp folio on yellow paper signed with initial at end evidence of carbon paper suggesting that this was the retained carbon copy by Radcliffe. The statement describes Radcliffe’s eye witness account of what has come to be seen as the most infamous yet decisive incident in the campaign waged by the Israeli Irgun terrorist organisation led by Menachem Begin against the British. It was this incident which finally brought the British to resolve to quite Palestine for good leading to the eventual establishment of the State of Israel. In the incident two British Intelligence Officers Sgts Pace and Martin were captured by the Irgun who announced their intention to murder them if three members of the Irgun held by the British were not released. The British authorities went ahead with the execution of the Irgun members and accordingly the two British Sergeants were hanged in woods outside the township of Natanya. Radcliffe was sent in to retrieve the bodies and this statement describes exactly what happened that day – July 31st 1947. Radcliffe describes finding the bodies and together with a Captain Galatti they tried to establish whether there were any booby trap devices. Unfortunately for Galatti when he came to cut down the bodies an undiscovered mine went off badly injuring him. Menachem Begin who led the Irgun and who subsequently became the Prime Minister of Israel and won the Nobel Peace prize for his involvement in the Camp David Agreement noted later that this incident ‘broke the back of British rule’.
India – the Kukas Copy of correspondence or extracts from correspondence relating to the Kooka Outbreak August 1st 1872 printed parliamentary briefing paper on 60pp folio. A rare and important paper in the history of India. The paper describes the events from January to July 1872 during the Kooka outbreak and in particular describes the leader Guru Ram Singh being placed under house arrest at Allahabad. Guru Ram Singh is revered by the Kooka sect as arguably the most important Guru. The outbreak was sparked by false rumours that the British were to allow the killing of sacred cows in the holy city of the Guru – leading to the beheading of four butchers at Amritsar. In the turmoil which followed more than 80 local people were executed by the British 49 of them blown up with canon fire.
