Lot 295

A rare folder of twenty-four individual illustrations, given to a German officer during his training at Potsdam Propaganda School in 1942 titled 'Aus Der Heimat Des PK-MANNES', with a foreword in German from the Lieutenant Colonel and District Commander, explaining that there was to be a significant change in the nature of wartime propaganda. The enclosed illustrations were produced after three years of war and show a marked attempt to minimise focus on the militarised elements of warfare and troop recruitment by, instead, documenting daily life and activities at the Potsdam Barracks and on Bornstedter Field. Such illustrations were created as an incentive to further achievements and inspire 'joyful commitment' in the service and act of what was meant to be a reminder of 'a busy and enjoyable time'. This original folio contains twenty-four individually titled printed illustrations, all in very good condition, illustrating daily life and aspects of potential training for recruits and those engaged in the service, each signed 'PK (Propaganda Kompanien): Schubert' and dated 1942, 12cm wide x 16cm high. Sold together with a wartime copy of Deutschen Apotheke. Provenance: Acquired by Herr Wiedler during his service as a Propaganda Training Officer at Potsdam Barracks, 1942. Wiedler would ultimately end up fighting on the Russian front and did not get back home until three years after the end of the war, after walking most of the way back to his home in Rheine in Nord Rhein Westfailia. In the absence of any form of communication, over such a long time, his wife had assumed he had died on the Russian Front. Notes: Potsdam Barracks housed two batteries dedicated to Propaganda. The Depot Battalion was housed in the Propaganda Kompanien Barracks and acted as a pool for trained propagandists awaiting assignment, in addition to the training centre. The battalion consisted of four companies: 1st company, journalists: 2nd company, photographers and war artists; 3rd company, war reporters and 4th company, depot company, which included administrative personnel, and personnel who have returned to the depot after completing a tour of duty. In addition, there was also a section for radio propaganda experts. Recruits were mainly men who in civil life were journalists, press photographers or film cameramen. They received normal infantry training and frequently were sent on courses of 4-6 weeks duration at the Ministry of Propaganda. The Propaganda Service Battalion likewise had its HQ in the same barracks. It consisted of two companies: 1st company, a pool of linguists and 2nd company, called the Propaganda Liaison Company (Propaganda Verbindungskompanie), which provided personnel for ensuring the transit of propaganda material (including periodicals and daily papers), to and from the various branches of the propaganda organization throughout the occupied countries and the theatres of war. Its strength was about 400 men.

HENRY HARWOOD REPORT ON BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE (1888 - 1950) British admiral, commanded a squadron consisting of the heavy cruisers HMS CUMBERLAND and HMS EXETER, and the light cruisers HMS ACHILLES and HMS AJAX, his flagship. He correctly anticipated the location of the pocket battleship ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE and successfully engaged her in the Battle of the River Plate on December 13, 1939. Important contemporary document (unsigned), not naming Harwood but undoubtedly prepared by him, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d., ca.1940], a brief self-typed account of the Battle of the River Plate. In small part: '...I knew a German Raider, probably a Pocket Battleship, was out and had been in the South Atlantic at the beginning of December. I thought she might next attack British trade on the South American Coast, and so I concentrated 3 Cruisers, Ajax, ACHILLES, and Exeter of the mouth of the Plate on December 12th...On the morning of the 13th, we were about 200 miles East of Punta del Esta. Smoke was sighted at 0610...[coming] from a Pocket Battleship. She came towards us and opened fire...All ships went on to full speed and went in to attack at once...Exeter on one flank and AJAX and ACHILLES on the other. Exeter was hit early, her bridge wrecked, and some of her guns were put out of action, but she went on closing the range, the Captain conning the ship from aft...We must have done the GRAF SPEE serious damage...she turned round under a smoke screen and made off...AJAX and ACHILLES closed in to 4 miles, frequently hitting GRAF SPEE, and fires were seen to break out...Both ships got slightly damaged, and AJAX had two turrets put out of action...GRAF SPEE made no attempt to close us...She did very accurate shooting, but got no hits...' The report also mentions the GRAF SPEE twice turning broadside to her attackers and unleashing salvoes which failed to find their marks before the battleship finally turned to make way for harbor. These pages are clearly not modern copies, and there is some fading, scattered foxing and edge wear commensurate with age. Only Harwood could have written this document, as only he held the position to order the vessels and observe the actions so reported.

AMERICANS HALT THE GERMANS AFTER KASSERINE Important pair of telegrams sent from British 1st Army Headquarters to British and American units involved in repulsing Field Marshal ERWIN ROMMEL's forces north of Kasserine, transmitted the day after the near destruction of several American and French regiments and battalions defending the crucial Kasserine Pass. These historic messages, each 1p. legal folio, Feb. 20, 1943, are written in military 'shorthand' but are relatively easy to decipher. They illustrate in some part the desperate effort being made to hold back Rommel's advance following his successes of the previous day. In small part: '...TO 18 ARMY GROUP...US 2 CORPS 5 CORPS 19 CORPS 8 ARMY...12 AIR FORCE 12 BOMBER COMMAND...SECRET...ENEMY CONTINUED TO ADV NORTH AND NW FROM KASSERINE PASS DURING NIGHT 20/21 FEB...AT LEAST 40 TANKS WITH INFANTRY ATTACKED CCB [1st Armored Division] POSITIONS...FIGHTING CONTINUED THROUGHOUT DAY...CCB DEFEATED ATTACKS ENEMY WITHDRW AND DURING EVENING CCB PUSHED FORWARD TO NORTHERN SLOPES...WHERE PREPARED ANTI-TANK POSITIONS ENCOUNTERED. ENEMY LOST SIX TANKS...WHILE FIRM BASE BEING PREPARED...25 ARMD BDE HELD ENEMY ATTACK BY 40 TANKS AND INFANTRY NORTH OF KASSERINE PASS DURING MORNING...26 ARMD BDE SUBSEQUENTLY DREW ENEMY TANKS TO PREPARED POSITION AND DESTROYED FOUR TANKS. FIHGTING CONTINUES...ENEMY INFANTRY ATTACK ON JUNCTION...REPULSED...THREE OWN TANKS LOST ONE ENEMY TANK HIT. FOURTEEN ENEMY TANKS ENGAGED BY NINE CHURCHILLS...FOUR ENEMY TANKS DISABLED ONE CHURCHILL DESTROYED...ENEMY ATTACK ON J RIDGE REPULSED...BISLEY AIRCRAFT ATTACKED MTON THE LEFT...' The message then notes that bad weather had halted aerial reconnaissance so results could not be determined. More good content. These messages are wrinkled a bit with stray dockets, pencil marks, and some thinned paper in one place, both bearing heavy mounting remnants on verso. Obtained from the Chief Clerk of the British 1st Army. By February 23, the Germans were through. Overextended and with supplies dwindling, pinned down by the Allied artillery in the pass in front of Thala and now facing U.S. counterattacks along the Hatab River, Rommel realized his attack had been stopped. With little prospect of further success, Rommel judged that it would be wiser to break off to concentrate in South Tunisia and strike a blow at the Eighth Army there.

SS GENERAL ORDERS MURDER OF CAMP INMATES Important printed document, 1p. legal folio, Office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes [Nuremberg, ca. 1946] an evidentiary translation of a 'Top Secret' SS-Economic and Administrative Main Office order generated at Oranienburg, Apr. 27, 1943 and signed by RICHARD GLUCKS (1889-1945), Concentration Camps Inspector and a direct subordinate of Heinrich Himmler. Glucks was responsible for the forced labor of the camp inmates, supervised medical practices in the camps, including human experimentation, and initiated the use of Zyklon B gas. The document is directed to the commandants of all of the major concentration camps, including Dachau, Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Mauthausen, Natzwiler, etc. It specifically instructs: 'The Reichsfuhrer-SS [Heinrich Himmler] has decreed that in the future only insane prisoners can be selected for the Action 14f13 by the medical commissions appointed for this purpose. All other prisoners unfit for work (persons suffering from tuberculosis, bedridden invalids etc.) are absolutely to be excluded from this action. Bed-ridden prisoners are to be given suitable work, which can also be done in bed. The order...must be strictly observed...The requests for gasoline for this purpose [cremation of bodies in open pits] will therefore be discontinued...' Chipped at margins with some paper loss (especially at bottom), but with no loss of text, a horizontal tape repair at bottom affecting only the translator's attestation. 'Aktion 14f13' was a campaign by Nazi Germany to murder concentration camp prisoners. Also called invalid or prisoner euthanasia, the sick, elderly and those deemed no longer fit for work were separated from the rest of the prisoners in a selection process, after which they were murdered. Clearly, Himmler's only concern here was saving gasoline as the course of the war in Russia had turned. Chilling, at the very least.

Lot 427

'DER STURMER' Issue of race-baiter Julius Streicher's anti-Semitic rag: 'Der Sturmer', 12pp. sm. folio, Nuremberg, July, 1936. The headline reads: 'Fraud upon Fraud Talmudereien without End' Beneath the headline appears a cartoon of a sneering 'Jew' looming over a dead man, a woman weeping beside the corpse. A poem beneath reads: 'It doesn't matter where in the world a man falls for the commune, If only the Jew wins, He stands in the background and grins'. As always, the bottom of the front page reads: 'The Jew is our Misfortune!' Content within is also largely anti-Semitic and includes a photo of Jewish 'communist' women, cartoons mocking Jews, editorial attacks on Jews, etc.

Lot 428

'DER STURMER' Issue of race-baiter Julius Streicher's anti-Semitic rag: 'Der Sturmer', 12pp. sm. folio, Nuremberg, January, 1937. The headline reads: 'The Talmud Jews - Jew Scandal in Copenhagen' and shows the expresiion 'The Jewish Question' in the form of a question mark. As always, the bottom of the front page reads: 'The Jew is our Misfortune!' Content within is also largely anti-Semitic and includes cartoons mocking Jews, editorial attacks on Jews, etc.

Lot 430

'HITLER AS A JEW' Sensational German newspaper 'Neue Abendzeitung', 6pp. folio, July 20, 1933, the headline proclaiming: 'The pit bull straight from Polna: Hitler as a Jew The truth about Hitler's descent - genealogical treasure-hunting...' The story occupies much of the first page and is centered on a graveyard and Jewish records in the town of Polna, Poland. At the time, there were many accusations of Hitler’s descent from Jews on his grandmother’s side, printed together with facsimiles of gravestones of his Jewish ancestors who were said to have been baptized in Vienna. Comparing extracts from birth and death certificates kept by the Jewish Community in Polna with certificates from a lower Austrian parish, one newspaper claimed it had sufficient proof that Hitler's ancestors were Jewish until 1850, most carrying the surname 'Huettler'. Paper is toned and ragged along the horizontal fold, with a small loss of text. Hitler had already been chancellor for six months when this story was published!

Lot 467

A superb period photographic copy of a Hungarian 'Schutz-Pass' or travel document issued by the Swedish embassy in Budapest that acted as a passport initialed by Raoul Wallenberg (1912 - disappeared 17 January 1945), Swedish businessman, diplomat, and humanitarian who saved tens of thousands of Jews in German-occupied Hungary from German Nazis and Hungarian Fascists during the later stages of World War II. While serving as Sweden's special envoy in Budapest between July and December 1944, Wallenberg sheltered Jews in buildings designated as Swedish territory and wrote thousands of passes to get them out of Hungary. The document is 1p. legal folio, Budapest, August 26, 1944, issued to Dr. Andreas Glucksthal, a Hungarian Jew, stating that he is authorized to travel to Sweden and is under the protection of their government, with Wallenberg's photocopied initials 'W.R.' in the bottom left. The top is stamped with the Hungarian word 'Masolat' ('Copy'), and the bottom 'Hitelesites A Tuloldalun' ('Authenticated on the face'). The verso is notarized by a Hungarian notary, bearing an original certification stamp indicating the signatory has seen the original document and is signing an accurate facsimile copy. Accompanied by another related photocopied document, 1p. 4to., Budapest, August 27, 1944, written by a secretary at the Swedish embassy requesting that Dr. Gluckstahl be exempted from wearing a yellow star in transit, bearing the same copy stamps, verso certification stamp, and Wallenberg's facsimile initials. Matted and framed. Very fine condition. These are authentic contemporary copies with original and contemporary manuscript and handstamps, thus provides an affordable opportunity to own a Schutzpass at a fraction of the normal $10,000-20,000 original. These lifesaving documents granted escape from otherwise certain death for countless Jews, and were paid for dearly with the life of one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century.

Lot 480

LITZMANNSTADT VICTIM EDUARD AGULAR DOCUMENTS Pair of documents once belonging to Holocaust victim Eduard Agular, a Jewish businessman born in Hamburg in February, 1907 who later settled in Prague with his wife. Included is a copy of Agular's birth certificate, 1po. legal folio, [Prague], 1939, signed at bottom by 'Rabbi Dr. Folkmann', accompanied by his 'List Domovsky', or Residence Document, 1p. legal folio, Chrudim (east of Prague), 1931, both documents with heavy folds and edge wear. Sold with copies of Agular's signed passport photo and identity papers. On October 26, 1941 Eduard Agular was one of a thousand Jews who boarded 'Transport C' destined for the Lodz Ghetto. Of those aboard, only 65 would survive the war. Agular is recorded as a victim of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto.
