[Pascaart van Europa op Wassende Graaden door Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop] This is the central portion of an extremely scarce oversized copperplate chart of Europe, extending to include the majority of the North Atlantic. The full plate was listed in an advertisement in Doncker`s Nieuw Groot Stuurmans Straetsboeck, published in 1664, and was to be printed on either vellum or paper. The advertisement explains that the chart would be fit to put in a golden frame as a ""jewel"" or prize decoration in the home. Only one example of the full chart is known to be in existence, a hand-colored vellum example at the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. As the oversized chart would not fit in a folio atlas, Doncker masked different portions of the chart in order to print the chart on paper for several of his atlases. The British Library has an example of this masked chart in a Doncker atlas published in 1696, Nieuwe Groote Vermeerderde Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Werelt. However, the chart in the British Library exemplar is shifted slightly to the west and includes a title added below the ships at bottom left: ""Pascaert van het Westerlyckste Deel van Europa."" This is the only known copy of this atlas. Another example of the masked chart exists in a 1693 Doncker atlas in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, with the chart shifted farther north.Doncker`s oversized sea chart is largely based on Jacob Aertsz. Colom`s four-sheet chart published in 1651, Der Groote Noord Zee Wassende Grade Pas Caart, which extends further north and west than Doncker`s chart (see Burden #302). The coastlines of Europe and northern Africa are filled with place names, while the coats of arms of various nations are placed within the interior. In Scandinavia is a charming depiction of horned sheep in a pasture. Along the right edge of the sheet are the beginnings of an elaborate vignette and the title cartouche.The Prime Meridian is based in the Canary Islands. Iceland, Jan Mayen Island, and the mythical Enchuyser Eylant are depicted just west of the Prime Meridian in the North Atlantic, with numerous place names and depth soundings surrounding Iceland. This chart also gives good detail of Greenland, which has a partially delineated coastline to the south and a projected coastline to the northeast. Interestingly, there are significant differences between this chart and all of Doncker`s other charts representing Greenland, Iceland, and Davis Strait, published between 1659 and his death in 1699. This chart gives two additional place names in Iceland: Lokula Haske in the south and Suer in the east. In addition, the shape of Greenland and place names along the coastline are starkly different in this map versus his other works. This map has place names concentrated on the western coast (partially truncated in this example), and depict the island with a more accurate shape. In contrast, Doncker`s other charts of Greenland show the island with a pointy southern tip that slants to the southwest, with several large islands at the southern end. These differences clearly show that this chart was based on Colom`s chart, whereas Doncker`s other maps representing Greenland were based on Pieter Goos` chart of Greenland, Iceland, and Davis Strait, first published in 1650 (Pascaerte van Groen-Landt), which itself was based on Theunis Jacobsz` chart of Greenland. Numerous small towns and rivers are noted, and the map is embellished with a stippled sea and a sailing ship. Pietro Maria Marchetti produced the second pocket atlas based on Abraham Ortelius` folio Theatrum. It is often referred to as the plagiarized version of the Epitome. Nova et Accurata Iaponiae Terrae Esonis, ac Insularum Adjacentium ex Novissima Detectione Descriptio This superb folio map is very unusual because it is based on Jansson`s small map (Iaponia et Terra Eso) from his Atlas Minor, rather than the other way around. It presents Japan on the model initiated by Dudley and then refined by Jansson with information from previously unpublished Dutch sources. The important Dutch discoveries of Marten De Vries relating to Ezo and the Kurils are shown as a huge Landt van Eso, Staten Eylant and Compagnies Land, misrepresentations that would appear on maps of the region for the next 150 years. Korea is shown as a large island with a single place name, Tauxem, at the approximate location of modern P`yongyang. Blank verso, published between 1644-58. A nice impression with a couple of printer`s creases along the centerfold and light but slightly uneven toning. [Lot of 2 - Flowers] Lot of two botanical engravings from this scarce, monumental work. The plates were produced in a combination of etching and mezzotint engraving. This complex printing process, invented by Johann Teyler in the Netherlands around 1688, made possible delicate lines and a very fine grain. The addition of hand coloring brought about unusual and subtle effects that make these beautiful plates very desirable. Includes plates 347 and 688.Weinmann’s major creation was Phytanthoza iconographia (1737-1745), a great project that comprised eight folio volumes with more than a thousand engravings of several thousand plants. One of the artists Weinmann employed was Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) who would become one of the foremost botanical illustrators of the eighteenth century. The text was written by the Regensburg physician, Dr. Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs. Phytanthoza iconographia was published in both Latin and German. Size varies slightly.A. N. 688 -- a. Morse`s General Atlas of the World. Containing Seventy Maps, Drawn and Engraved from the Latest and Best Authorities This complete atlas contains 70 cerographic maps on 66 sheets with approximately half of the maps focused on the United States. The maps of North America and the United States feature large Utah, New Mexico and Nebraska territories, with Oregon and Washington Territory extending to the Continental Divide. The map of Texas shows county development confined to the eastern half of the state, with Presido, El Paso, and a large, unnamed Staked Plain occupying the west. The map of Florida shows the extent of surveying confined north of Tampa. Several of the state maps employ red overprinting to identify counties, roads, and railroads (presumably to be the most up-to-date at the time of printing). Outside of the United States, there is a fascinating Chart Showing the Recent Search for a North-West Passage which depicts the extensive effort in locating John Franklin, who searched for a Northwest Passage in 1845 and disappeared in 1847. Decorated by an elegant frontispiece featuring an explorer and vignettes from around the world. Elephant folio, rebound with new maroon cloth over original tan cloth boards with gilt title on front cover and marbled endpapers. Maps are very good to near fine with light toning and occasional offsetting from opposing text. There is light scattered foxing on frontispiece, title page, and text. Colton`s General Atlas, Containing One Hundred and Seventy Steel Plate Maps and Plans, on One Hundred Imperial Folio Sheets... Colton`s massive single-volume General Atlas, is considered by many to be the pinnacle of American cartography in the latter part of the 19th Century. There are 89 single-page and 6 (out of 7 - missing New York State) double-page maps in all, including many highly sought-after state and regional maps. It includes the desirable Territories of New Mexico and Utah depicting the region with the largest configurations of the Utah and New Mexico territories. Other important state maps featured in this atlas are the double-page editions of Kansas and Nebraska, which shows little development in the western reaches of each state; Washington & Oregon, which shows Washington Territory encompassing the region that would become Idaho; and nice maps of Texas and California. The atlas also features several thematic maps including Mountains and Rivers and Comparative Size of Lakes and Islands. A pair of fine city plans are the single-page, uncolored Environs of London and Environs of Paris. The frontispiece features four beautiful muses gathered around the globe in a classical allegorical engraving. This is a beautiful example of a rarely offered atlas by one of America`s pre-eminent cartographers. The atlas is nearly complete with only the map of the state of New York missing. The volume includes a frontispiece, title page, list of maps, text and maps. Folio. Hardbound in original quarter calf with tips over green cloth with decorative gilt titling on front and spine. Marbled edges. The maps have bold original color and range in condition from near fine to good, with light toning, occasional spots of foxing, and faint offsetting. The double-page world map has a centerfold separation at bottom. Mitchell`s New General Atlas, Containing Maps of the Various Countries of the World, Plans of Cities, etc. Embraced in Fifty Quarto Maps, Forming a Series of Eighty Maps and Plans, Together with Valuable Statistical Tables This complete example of Mitchell`s world atlas was produced during the second year of the Civil War. It is complete with 80 maps and plans on 50 sheets, each surrounded by Mitchell`s signature floral border. There are 25 map sheets related to the United States including 34 individual states and territories, regions and city plans. There are two world maps - one hemispheric and the other drawn on Mercator`s Projection.The map of Texas shows county development to 100° longitude with the large regions of El Paso, Presidio and Bexar Territory further west. The Staked Plain is now called Young Territory. The map of the United States depicts the Confederate Territory of Arizona, Nebraska with a long panhandle, and Washington Territory in its inverted ""L"" shape. The Pony Express route is depicted as are numerous exploration routes, important trails including the Santa Fe, the Overland Mail Route to California, wagon roads and early railroads. This 1862 edition did not include a separate map of the southwest, however on the U.S. map the southern tip of Nevada is contained as part of New Mexico Territory, and Utah encroaches a full degree into Nevada. Includes full-page plans of the cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, New Orleans and Cincinnati. All maps carry the 1860 copyright date. Hardbound small folio, publisher`s quarter calf with tips over cloth covered boards, stamped title on front cover. Title page, list of maps, and maps and plans are followed by 26 pages of text: List of Post Offices in the United States, Table of Population, Governments. &C., Mountains of the World, and Rivers of the World. Condition code is for the maps which are generally very good with light toning and scattered foxing. The map of Ohio/Indiana has separated from the text block and chipped along the edges of the sheet. The title page and list of maps have large damp stains. Johnson`s New Illustrated Family Atlas, with Physical Geography, and with Descriptions Geographical, Statistical, and Historical... This complete atlas contains 55 beautifully rendered maps, including 47 double-page maps. There are several thematic maps and diagrams interspersed throughout the text that display the geology, weather, tides, agriculture, flags and animal kingdoms of the world. The steel-engraved frontispiece is a lovely view of the US Capitol. This atlas also features the double-page Civil War map Vicinity of Richmond.This edition includes the Southwest map depicting the original four counties of Yavapai, Mohave, Yuma, and Pima in the newly organized Arizona Territory, with Prescott as the capital. The Utah/Nevada border is now at 114° and Arizona and Nevada have their final borders. Early historical details include the Pony Express and United States Mail routes, the emigrant roads to California, and the proposed southern railroad route.The double-page map of Texas shows county development mostly in eastern Texas and only the four large counties of Young, El Paso, Presidio and Bexar in the west. The panhandle, noted as the Staked Plains … without Wood or Water, includes a large section that is unorganized. There is nice depiction of the wagon roads, many named, with several completed railroads. The inset maps are `Northern part of Texas` and `Plan of Galveston Bay.` The double-page map of `Nebraska, Dakota, Idaho and Montana` shows a very early rendering of Wyoming Territory, organized in 1868. Idaho is shown taking up the present-day Wyoming region south of Jackson Hole. With the exception of the southwestern border, Montana is correctly formed which, along with Wyoming, was previously contained in a large Idaho territory. Dakota Territory, from which Wyoming was formed, remains undivided. There is excellent detail throughout with scores of place names, roads, watershed, topography, the Emigrant Road, forts, springs, routes of exploration and proposed railroads. The route of the Pony Express & U.S. Mail Route through Utah, Wyoming and Nebraska is delineated.Folio. 137 pp., frontispiece, 55 maps, and 5 charts depicting mountains and rivers of the world, flags, universal time, and coats of arms. Hardbound in original quarter leather with tips and green cloth, embossed covers with gilt titles on cover and spine, marbled pastedowns. The maps are all in very good to near fine condition with bright original color, light toning around sheet edges, occasional spots of foxing, and minor offsetting on a few maps. Four double-page maps have long centerfold separations that have been closed on verso with archival tape, and the map of New York State has a 4"" tear along the centerfold that has also been closed on verso with archival tape. The binding is sound. The front and back free-endpapers have been removed, and the last page in the atlas is partially detached. Tunison`s Peerless Universal Atlas of the World This is a lovely and unusual atlas complete with over 80 wax engraved, hand colored maps and diagrams, most with decorative borders and some with vignettes. Nearly half of the maps relate to the United States. Most of the maps are printed on both sides. The map of California, Oregon, and Nevada is particularly nice with insets of Yosemite and the Redwoods. Also featured are two pages of presidential portraits and numerous engravings showing the diverse civilizations and cultures of the world. The last map is ""Map of the Regions about the Unknown North Polar Sea Showing the Latest Exploring Expeditions."" These maps are uncommon for their late hand coloring, a laborious process that was largely abandoned two decades earlier. Small folio, 208 pp. Hardbound in original, embossed brown cloth boards. A very lovely example of this increasingly difficult to find atlas. Maps are very good to near fine with light pleasant toning. Title page has minor soiling and foxing mostly in the blank margins. [On 2 Sheets] Typus Cosmographicus Universalis [with book] Novus Orbis Regionum ac Insularum Veteribus Incognitarum... This striking oval woodcut map of the world was first published in the 1532 edition of Novus Orbis Regionum, an anthology of travel reports published by Simon Grynaeus and Johann Huttich. The work includes a commentary by Sebastian Munster, to whom the map is often attributed due to a statement within his commentary: ""We have found it impossible to indicate the position of all of the regions and all of the islands, because the narrowness of our map did not allow it, and that was not our object."" However, the map bears little resemblance to Munster`s maps of the world and western hemisphere published in 1540. The nomenclature, distribution of land, and geographical depictions are starkly different between this world map and Munster`s other work. It is more likely that Munster`s commentary used the terms ""we"" and ""our"" to reference the collaborative effort of putting together Typus Cosmographicus Universalis, rather than admission of his own efforts related to it. The highly decorative nature of this map is quite unusual for the early 16th century. The masterful engraving of the embellishments has led scholars to believe that the map was designed by Hans Holbein the Younger, who engraved vignettes for Munster and others in Basel between 1528-32.Although the authorship of this map is debatable, its rich artistry is undeniable. The oval projection is surrounded by vignettes depicting various people and fauna from around the world, both real and mythical. At bottom left are the cannibals of South America, with body parts roasting on a spit and hanging from a teepee-like structure. At top left are the Ubangi people of Africa displaying lip plates, a hunted elephant who appears to have captured a human of his own, and winged dragons devouring a horned sheep. At top right is an additional hunting scene along with depictions of several plants. And at bottom right is Lodovico de Varthema, an Italian adventurer, returning to a European seaport to tell of his travels in the Middle East and Asia.However the most fascinating, and revolutionary, decorative elements are the two angels hovering at the north and south poles, turning crank handles to rotate the world on its axis. This concept of keeping the world in motion was innovative in the early 16th century, when it was still believed that the universe revolved around the earth. In fact, Copernicus` ground-breaking and controversial theory of heliocentrism wasn`t published until 1543 in his De Revolutionibus Coelestium. It is possible that the map`s author was aware of Copernicus` principles either by word of mouth or from a brief manuscript edition of Copernicus` Commentariolus, which began circulating around 1529.Within the oval itself are additional embellishments, including a galleon, several dolphin-like sea monsters, and a siren off the eastern coast of Asia.Geographically, the map is antiquated. There are no signs of a southern continent, despite reports from the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522, led by Magellan. The map generally follows the models of Waldseemuller`s world map of 1507 and Apianus` world map of 1520, showing America as a separate continent between two distinct oceans. However, the map`s author tries to reconcile between Waldseemuller`s map and Columbus` claim that Cuba was not an island by depicting North America with an elongated shape and named Terra de Cuba, and showing only one (rather than two) large islands to the east, yet labeled as both Isabella (Cuba) and Spagnolla (Hispaniola). To the north is Terra Cortesia, a representation of Newfoundland. Another interesting aspect is the representation of Japan, Zipangri, which is shown closer to North America than to Asia.The map is accompanied by the 1537 edition of the Novus Orbis Regionum, in which the map was originally published but has since been removed. The work includes accounts of the expeditions of Columbus, Vespuccio, Marco Polo, and Varthema, among others. Small folio, 598 pp. Bound in full vellum (not original) with title stamped on spine and new endpapers. The map is clean and bright with wide, original margins. The left-hand sheet has professional repairs to one small and three tiny worm holes along the centerfold, with a minute amount of image replaced in facsimile. The right-hand sheet has a centerfold separation that enters 1/2"" into image at left and has been professionally repaired. The text is also clean and bright with very minor soiling. Sebastian Munster`s name has been blacked out in old manuscript ink in the table of contents and his commentary section, causing a hole in the title page at top. The title page has several old ink notations. The hinges are starting and the covers are heavily worn, with the vellum beginning to detach from the covers. A magnificent copy of the Ninth German Bible. The only printed German Bible edition by Koberger, one of the most beautifully illustrated bibles of the 15th century. The series of fine woodcuts influenced later Bible illustration, including those by Dürer for Koberger`s 1498 Apocalypse. They had first appeared in two Low-German Bible editions printed at Cologne in 1478/79 and are attributed to the eponymous `Master of the Cologne Bibles`. For his Bible Kobeger commissioned two new German types and is said to have run 24 presses to print it. It was available in 3 forms: completely uncolored, rubricated and colored simply in green, ochre and purple, or rubricated and colored in a wide variety of colors and gold leaf. The second part of our copy has the deluxe illumination while the first part of the present copy is uncolored but with painted lombards, 2 large initials in gold and 21 contemp. mounted handcolored woodcut Maiblumen initials (cf. the copy sold at Christie`s, 14 Dec. 2001 which has also this contemp. mounted initials) at the beginning of each biblical book. Altogether with 109 woodcuts (of which the 21 of the 2nd part are colored), numerous painted lombards in red or blue and 2 large initials in gold with tendrils. 17th cent. blindstamped pigksin over wooden boards with fine brass fittings and 2 brass clasps. 582 Rom. numb. leaves (of 583). Im ersten behandelt Brunschwig Destillationsgeräte und -methoden mit Beschreibung der notwendigen Gerätschaften und detaillierten Anweisungen zum Bau verschiedener Öfen. Das zweite ist ein reich illustriertes Kräuterbuch auf Grundlage des Mainzer Gart der Gesundheit von 1485, wobei er für die heimische Flora eigene Beobachtungen anführt und so botanische Pionierarbeit leistet. Das dritte Buch beschreibt die einzelnen Krankheiten vom Kopf bis zu den Füßen und gibt Anweisung zu deren Kur mit destillierten Wassern. - Der Titelholzschnitt mit prachtvoller Darstellung eines Kräutergartens, in dem auch zwei Destillieröfen betrieben werden. Die schönen Abbildungen der Öfen und Destillen im ersten Teil erschienen hier zum ersten Mal und wurden im Großen Destillierbuch wiederverwendet. Jahrhunderts , `das wichtigste naturhistorische Werk des Mittelalters` (Choulant). Der Hortus sanitatis ist gegenüber dem vorausgegangenen Herbarius und Gart der Gesundheit so stark verändert, daß er als neues Buch anzusehen ist. Der Text dieses Hortus ist zum Teil nach dem von Johann von Cube (Johann Wonnecke aus Kaub) verfaßten Gart der Gesundheit übersetzt und mit weiteren Quellen angereichert. Einer der wichtigsten Unterschiede zu den Vorläufern besteht darin, daß die von Tieren, Steinen und Metallen herrührenden Arzneistoffe hier getrennt in besonderen Abschnitten behandelt werden und daß bei jeder Pflanze, jedem Tier und jedem Stein die ihnen zugeschriebenen Heilwirkungen zu einem besonderen Abschnitt unter der Überschrift operationes zusammengefaßt sind. Diese Neuerung fand in nachfolgender Zeit fast überall Nachahmung. Die schönen Holzschnitte wurden nach der Mainzer Ausgabe von Meydenbach 1491 gedruckt. `Daß sich Johann Prüss an die Meydenbach`sche Ausgabe .. angelehnt hat, ist ohne weiteres ersichtlich .. Freilich hat er nicht einfach die Meydenbach`schen Holzschnitte übernommen, sondern sie in etwas veränderter Größe, meist verkleinert, wiedergegeben, viel im Gegensinn` (Schramm). Drei Holzschnitte sind von Grüninger entliehen, die dieser für Brunschwigs Chirurgie angefertigt hat. Diese ganzseitigen Holzschnitte zeigen einen Magister mit vier Studenten, ein menschliches Skelett (verbesserte Kopie nach Richard Helain, Nürnberg 1493) und einen Artz, der einem Apotheker Anweisungen gibt.Zustand: Gering fleckig, tls. leicht gebräunt und vereinz. etw. wasserrandig, wenige Randeinrisse oder Randläsuren, die blauen Lombarden meist etw. verblaßt, Titel mit Knickspuren, einige alte Marginalien, Holzschnitte vereinz. mit deutscher Bezeichnung von alter Hand. Müller hatte in den 1930er bis 1960er, der Hochzeit der Luxusschiffahrt, auf den Passagierdampfern der Reederei United States Lines im Bordservice gearbeitet und war bis zum Chefsteward aufgestiegen. - Die aus einer Postschiffahrtsgesellschaft hervorgegangene amerikanische Reederei United States Lines betrieb von 1929 bis 1969 eine Transatlantiklinie (New York-Bremerhaven und New York-London) für Luxux-Passagierdampfer, die tlw. mit ehemals deutschen, als Reparationszahlungen übernommenen Passagierschiffen (America , George Washington ), später mit eigens für die Reederei gebauten Dampfern befahren wurde. Der berühmteste Dampfer, die United States , das Flaggschiff der Reederei, die auf ihrer Jungfernfahrt 1952 (unter Kapitän H. Manning) das `Blaue Band` errang. Sie hält bis heute den Rekord für die schnelleste Atlantikquerung eines Passagierschiffes in östlicher Richtung. - Hermann Müller fuhr auf unter anderem auf den Schiffen America , President Roosevelt , Leviathan , Manhattan , Washington und der United States. Als Chefsteward hatte er die Verantwortung über Küche und Vorratshaltung sowie die Reinung des Schiffs. Müllers große Umsicht und Einsatzbereitschaft für das persönliche Wohl der teils prominenten Passagiere sowie ein offensichtlich sympathisches Wesen machten ihn zum ersten Ansprechpartner und beliebten Mitglied der Bordcrew, wie zahlreiche herzliche und persönliche Widmungen auf den Fotografien wie `Wishing you as always a Happy sailing thru life` bezeugen. Die Fotografien (Formate zwischen 7 : 12 und 20 : 26 cm) stammen überwieg. von den Bordfotografen der Linie oder von privat und zeigen neben den Passagieren auch die Crew und das Küchenpersonal, Banketts, Silvester- und Geburtstagsfeiern, Bordhochzeiten, Seebestattung, seltener Details oder Gesamtaufnahmen der Passgierdampfer; sowie Familienfotos aus dem Privatleben von H. Die Kontroverse zwischen dem hermetischen Theosophen Fludd und dem materialistischen Naturphilosophen Gassendi wurde von der europäischen Intelligenz aufmerksam verfolgt, da sich die philosophische Weltsicht unter dem Einfluß der wachsenden Naturwissenschaft Anfang des 17.
