A large French Royal leather portfolio, late 18th c., diced russia, some staining, extrems. worn, remnants of ties, spine divided by gilt scalloped flower roll between double and single rules, compartments with alternating star and rectangular designs, both composed of a profusion of gilt fleurons, and flower, roundel, and volute tools, covers with wide gilt border composed of dolphin and coronet roll, fleur-de-lys and star roll, and fleur-de-lys and fleuron roll, all with double and single fillets between, large central lozenge composed of fleurons, volutes, and stars, with the number 3 within a small decorative lozenge above and below, lower cover with early ms. paper label detailing previous contents, marbled endpapers, folio, 61 x 48cm (24 x 19ins). The 1st Marquess of NorthamptonÕs residences included Castle Ashby, Northamptonshire and also Compton Wynyates, Warwickshire. Castle Ashby is illustrated in volume 3 of this work (plate 8/9). (3)
