Africa. Blaeu (G.), Africae nova descriptio, published Amsterdam [1621 - 1630], uncoloured engraved carte-a-figure map, one small rust mark affecting imgae, slight worming, 415 x 555 mm, no text on verso A fine example of Blaeu's folio carte-a-figure map of Africa. The map is a reduction of Blaeu's wall map of 1608, with the coastal cartography based on Portuguese sources. A decorative border surrounds three sides: above are nine birds-eye views of the principal European cities including Tunis, Algiers, Alexandria, and Tangiers; flanking the map are ten costumed figures representing the national dress of various African inhabitants.This is the third state with the name changed in the cartouche from Guil:Janssonio to Guiljelmo Blaeu, and no text on the verso. The map would be incorporated into Blaeu's first atlas the Appendix in 1630. Later states with text on the verso would appear in all Blaeu's subsequent atlases. (1)

The Platonic Theology is considered Ficino's philosophical masterpiece. Though theological in scope, the main concern of the work is to argue for the existence of an immortal human soul. Among Ficino's arguments are a revision of those made by Plato in the Phaedo. Ficino ascribes to the human soul a middle position in a five-part division of things: between God and angelic beings on the one side, and qualities and bodies on the other. A handsome example of this important edition. This edition 'has always been regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus, and is his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen' (T.B. He also wrote the music for Milton's masque Comus, at the poet's request, first performed at Ludlow Castle on September 29, 1634. (1)

Day, blind decoration to spine, folio Wing B1582. This edition includes the first folio appearance of 'The Two Noble Kinsmen', attributed to John Fletcher and William Shakespeare. The play was first published in quarto format in 1634. It was not included in the First Folio (1623) or any of the subsequent Folios of Shakespeare's works; nor was it included in the first folio of Beaumont and Fletcher's Works (1647). The dual attribution for the play is now generally accepted by scholarly consensus. This copy formerly belonged to the Rev. Ralph Sadleir, incumbent of Chelsea Old Church. The volume was damaged during WWII and later repaired by the Queen's binder at Windsor Castle. (1)
