Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Florida Published around the time that the Florida Territory was officially established as a possession of the United States, this fascinating map shows the territory in nice detail. Most of the settlements, including St. Augustine, are located in the northern part of the territory, while the southern portion of the peninsula, under Seminole control, is bereft of European presence. A single road connects St. Augustine to other settlements in its vicinity, and numerous forts are identified. The territory`s many waterways are delineated, with some swampland depicted. The Florida Keys are called the Martyrs, a name generated by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513, when he charted the islands. Parts of Georgia, Alabama, and Cuba are visible along with numerous smaller islands and currents off the coast. The map is on a full folio sheet (20.5 x 16.7"") with English text that details the territory`s geography, population (less than 10,000), major towns, government, history, and more. Andrew Jackson and William P. Duvall are listed as the territory`s first two governors. Drawn by Fielding Lucas, Jr. and engraved by Young & Delleker. A dark impression with original color. There are professional repairs to centerfold separations at top and bottom, a tear that enters 1"" at top, and two small chips along the neatline at top and bottom, with a minor amount of neatline replaced in facsimile. 11.6"" W x 9.5"" H Carey & Lea, 1822

Lot 235

Carte Geographique, Statistique et Historique de l`Indiana This is the French version of the first separate atlas map of Indiana. More than half the state is undeveloped with the huge Delaware and Wabash counties taking up most of central region and only thirty-five organized counties. The northern part is noted as Frontiere Indienne and occupied by the Kickapoo Indians. Fort Wayne and a fort at Prophet`s Town are shown guarding this frontier. The map is surrounded by French text on a full folio sheet (24 x 18.2""), with a table listing the population of each county (Wabash having only 147 people). A bright and clean example with original color, a hint of offsetting, and just a couple of faint spots in the text. 11.1"" W x 8.4"" H Buchon, Jean Alexandre 1825

Lot 244

Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Maine This map of the new state of Maine was beautifully engraved by J. Yeager. It shows the state with only nine counties and a population of less than 300,000. There is good detail of the extensive system of lakes and rivers. Wagon roads are limited to the southern portion, most connecting the coastal towns. Bangor and Canaan, as well as many small villages are named. A handsome map on a full folio sheet (20.4 x 16.7"") with surrounding text giving historical, physical, and political information. A table lists all governors current to Albion K. Parris, 1821; from 1652 to 1820, Maine was under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts. Original color with archivally repaired centerfold separations at top and bottom. A previous owner has attached relevant newspaper clippings to the verso, of which there is faint show-through on recto. 16.6"" W x 20.4"" H Carey & Lea, 1822

Lot 286

Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Rhode Island This map was beautifully drawn by F. Lucas and finely engraved by J. Yeager. It shows the state with a population of only 83,000 as compared to today`s number of over one million. Five counties are named, and there is an adequate network of wagon roads. Newport, Little Rest, Bristol, Warren, and Providence are shown in a block layout. All of Block Island is shown to the south. Towns and settlements include Tower Hill, Charlestown, East Greenwich, and Pocasset. Among details are a powder mill, the Great Swamp, Perry`s Iron Works, as well as turnpikes headed to Norwich, Connecticut, and Pawcatuck. On a full folio sheet (20.6 x 16.7""), the surrounding text gives historical, physical, and political information. A table lists all Governors current to William C. Gibbs, 1821. A fine impression with minor toning along the centerfold, faint soiling, and a short centerfold separation at bottom that has been archivally repaired. 11.4"" W x 8.4"" H Carey & Lea, 1822

Lot 330

[On 4 Sheets] A New Map of Mexico and Adjacent Provinces Compiled from Original Documents This is one of the most important maps of Texas and the Southwest from the early 19th century. Arrowsmith`s map was the first to incorporate the discoveries of both Zebulon Montgomery Pike and Alexander von Humboldt. Pike`s official account had just become available in 1810, and Humboldt`s map of New Spain was published in 1811. It is not known how Arrowsmith obtained an early copy of Humboldt`s map, and Humboldt accused him of plagiarism for neglecting to properly credit his work. However, Arrowsmith`s success came from relying on multiple sources of information. He carefully sifted through conflicting data between explorers and incorporated the most accurate cartographical information to create the most accurate, up-to-date map of the region. The California coastline was based on the explorations of Vancouver, whose track is noted in the map, as well as information provided to Arrowsmith by the Hudson`s Bay Company. The Rocky Mountain region and the Gulf Coast draw primarily on Humboldt, while present-day Texas and the Brazos and Guadalupe River regions were based on Pike`s accounts. The Dominguez-Escalante Expedition of 1776 from Santa Fe through present-day Colorado, Utah, and Arizona is also depicted. Additional notes on the mapping of the region are provided throughout the map.The eastern boundary of US and Mexico extends approximately 50 miles east of the present-day boundary of Texas at the Sabine River, to the Mermentau River in Louisiana. This was the official Spanish stance on the eastern boundary as reported by Humboldt. The boundary follows the Mermentau River to the northeast and then turns to the northwest until it passes the 32nd parallel just south of the Red River, and then begins to head southwest. Between the 99th and 100th meridians, the boundary again turns northwest up to the town of San Saba, which remains under Spanish control. The boundary then again heads southwest until it reaches the Rio del Norte. The map includes three inset maps of locations in Mexico. Below the title cartouche is the Valley of Mexico, from Mr. Humboldt`s Map showing the area surrounding Mexico City with excellent topographical detail, as well as towns, roads, and rivers. The other two insets illustrate the harbors of Veracruz and Acapulco, with numerous soundings, rocks, shoals, anchorages and navigational notes. There were several editions of the map with corrections in 1815, 1816, and 1817, with a note in the title indicating the date of the additions. A final edition was published in 1825 with further corrections, including the US-Mexico boundary reflecting the Adams Onis Treaty of 1819, although this edition is still dated 1810, and is occasionally mistakenly identified as the first edition (including by Streeter). According to Martin & Martin, Arrowsmith was able to synthesize the best information from various explorers, while omitting their errors, thereby creating a ""significantly improved depiction of the region."" Arrowsmith`s map of Texas and the southwest is a landmark map that was one of the most influential and widely copied maps for several decades.Printed on four double elephant-folio sized sheets. Size is for each sheet, which varies slightly. If joined, the map would measure approximately 62 x 50.5"". Fine impressions and bold original color on sturdy paper with ""J. Whatman 1811"" watermarks. There is light offsetting on each sheet, which are otherwise clean and bright. The bottom left sheet has a hint of toning along the centerfold and a 1/2"" centerfold separation at bottom. Please note that the image of the map as a whole is a composite image - the four sheets are not joined. 25.4"" W x 31.1"" H Arrowsmith, Aaron, Sr. 1810

Lot 331

Mexico This is the first edition of Arrowsmith`s folio-sized map of southwestern United States, Texas and Mexico, and was published four years prior to Texas gaining independence from Mexico. In Upr. or New California, there is an American Fur Co. Depot on the eastern shore of Youta or Gt. Salt L.. The Great Spanish Road is shown extending from the Red River on the US-Mexico boundary and past Santa Fe to Nutrias. A note through present-day New Mexico states that the area is ""frequented by roving bands of Indians who roam about in the quest of game."" A large inset depicts central Mexico, centered on Mexico City and showing the important ports of Acapulco, Vera Cruz and Tampico. Original color on sturdy paper with a few tiny, unobtrusive spots. 19.1"" W x 23.7"" H Arrowsmith, John 1832

Lot 386

America Meridionalis Superb folio map of the continent that was added by Jodocus Hondius for publication in his continuation of the Mercator Atlas. The interior features the large mythical Parime Lacus straddling the equator and an equally interesting river system. The huge Rio de la Plata flows south from the conjectural Eupana Lacus in Brazil, while the R. Grande flows north from the same lake to join the Amazon River. The Strait of Magellan is shown, but Tierra del Fuego is part of the large southern continent. The map is beautifully engraved with a wave pattern in the oceans, which are filled with ships, sea monsters and a native canoe. The continent is flanked by two elaborate cartouches; title to the right and a large inset plan of Cuzco incorporated into the distance scale cartouche on the left. A Native American is seen with a bow and arrow in the interior. Latin text on verso. A clean and bright example with a nice impression. There are expert repairs to several separations along the centerfold. 14.1"" W x 19.4"" H Hondius, Jodocus 1623
