Sturm`s edition was the most complete German collection of Archimedes` main mathematical works. The second part is `Archimedis Sand-Rechnung oder Tiefsinnige Erfindung einer mit verwunderlicher Leichtigkeit ausprechlichen…`, which asks the questions `how many grains of sand could the entire universe hold?`.

It concerns the rumoured affair between the famous soprano Catherine Tofts and Pope Clement XI. Catherine Tofts (?1680-1756) rose to prominence as a soprano in London before retiring in 1709 and marrying Joseph Smith, later the British consul to Venice. Both Pope and Swift featured her in their writings.
