D.S., W Bentinck, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Calcutta, Bengal, 1st February 1834. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing A[braham] Roberts to be a Lieutenant Colonel in the King's Army in the East Indies. With the remnants of a small red wax seal affixed by the original ribbon at the base of the document; Edward Barnes (1776-1838) British Lieutenant General who fought at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was wounded. Governor of Ceylon 1824-31. D.S., E Barnes, one page, oblong folio, Simla, Bengal, 11th October 1832. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Abraham Roberts to the a Lieutenant Colonel in the King's Army in the East Indies. With a wax seal affixed alongside the signature; George Anson (1797-1857) British Major General who fought at the Battle of Waterloo. D.S., George Anson, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Simla, Bengal, 2nd April 1857. The partially printed document is a military commission issued by Anson in his capacity as General and Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies and appoints George Ricketts Roberts to be a Captain in the Queen's Army in the East Indies. With a wax seal affixed alongside the signature. Three documents with interesting associations. Some minor, neat splitting to the edges of the folds of one document and some light age wear, generally VG, 3 Abraham Roberts (1784-1873) British General, father of Major General George Ricketts Roberts and Field Marshal Frederick Roberts (1832-1914) Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Indian Mutiny on 2nd January 1858.
VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. D.S., Victoria R I, as Queen, at the head, one page, oblong folio, Court at Saint James’s, 20th February 1895. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing John Bedward Royle to be a Second Lieutenant in the Volunteer Forces. Countersigned at the foot by the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne (1845-1927) British Politician, Secretary of State for War 1895-1900. With blind embossed pale blue paper seal affixed. Neatly laid down and with some minor age wear and light staining to the edges, very slightly affecting Lansdowne’s signature, but not that of the Queen. G
GEORGE VI: (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52. D.S., George R. I., as King, at the head, one page, large folio, Court at Saint James's, 2nd June 1943. The partially printed document grants the dignity of a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George to Anthony Hastings George. Countersigned at the foot by the Earl of Athlone (1874-1957, Governor General of Canada 1940-46) in his capacity as Grand Master and by Earl of Clarendon (1877-1955, Lord Chamberlain 1938-52) in his capacity as Chancellor. With blind embossed paper seal affixed at the head. Some light age toning to the right edge, only very slightly affecting the text and countersignatures, otherwise VG Sir Anthony Hastings George (1886-1944) British Consul-General at Boston, Massachusetts, 1943-44.

A good, early D.S., George R, just two days after becoming King, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Saville House, 27th October 1760. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing Anthony St. Legor (sic) to be a Major in the 21st Regiment of Dragoons or Royal Forresters commanded by John Manners, Marquess of Granby. Countersigned at the foot by William Pitt (1708-1778) The Elder. 1st Earl of Chatham. British Prime Minister 1766-68, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1756-57, 1757-61. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light dust staining and a few very small, extremely minor tears at the edges, not affecting the signatures. About VG Anthony St. Leger (c.1731-1786) British Army Officer and Horse Racing Enthusiast. Founder of the St. Leger Stakes horse race. Established in 1776, the St Leger is the oldest of Britain's five Classics. It is the last of the five to be run each year, and its distance is longer than any of the other four. John Manners (1721-1770) Marquess of Granby. English Lieutenant-General. Granby served in the Seven Years' War as overall commander of the British troops on the battlefield and was subsequently rewarded with the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Forces. He was popular with his troops and many public houses are still named after him today.
