Spencer 'can claim to be the founder of the study of comparative religion' (Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, p.1298). The author, who was Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, proposed that Judaism was not the earliest of religions. The present work outlines the rituals and laws of the Jews and other Semitic peoples.

Cretté (Georges, binder) & Louis Jou, designer.- Ronsard (Pierre de) Sonnets pour Hélène, number 21 of 225 copies on papier vergé, from an edition limited to 258, designed and printed in red & black by Louis Jou with woodcut title-vignette portrait, decorations and initials throughout, bound in vellum, by Georges Cretté, hand-painted by Jou in red, black and gilt, title on upper cover and author's name on lower in red and black with border and swirls of vine leaves in gilt, spine titled in black, initialled by the artist on lower cover, yapp edges, t.e.g., others uncut, original wrappers printed in orange and black bound in, T.L.s. from the American bookseller W. Thomas Taylor concerning the binding loosely inserted, original board slip-case (slightly rubbed), small folio, Paris, Les Livres de Louis Jou, [1927].⁂ A typically handsome production by Louis Jou, foregoing illustration and relying solely on type and ornament, and in a wonderful decorated binding. In his letter Taylor speculates that the binding was a collaboration between Cretté & Jou with the application of the actual design being undertaken by Jou himself. As evidence of this another copy was sold in the library of Jan van der Marck in 2009 in an almost identical binding, decorated by Jou although the actual binding was executed by Adrien Lavaux.

The new book 'Delle fortificationi libro sesto, dove si tratta della difesa delle fortezze' deals principally with sieges, addressing practical problems, like how to repair breached walls, make temporary or portable defences, make the artillery mobile and protect the artillerist, all of which was based on the author's experience in the field. This edition also contains 18 new chapters to the earlier books, with 27 new woodcuts.

India.- Hodges (William) Select Views in India, drawn on the spot, in the years 1780, 1781, 1782, and 1783, 2 vol. in 1, first edition, first issue, titles, dedications and text in English and French (all double-page leaves mounted on stubs), lacking titles to vol.1 but with titles to vol.2 bound at beginning and two dedications, lists of plates single leaves and in English only, with 48 fine aquatint plates printed in bistre and engraved map of River Ganges, two plates of Gwalior with small stain (fainter on second plate), some other light spotting or soiling to plates, mostly marginal, a few with faint horizontal line at head from edge of mount of preceding leaf, contemporary diced russia, gilt, rubbed, a few stains and scratches, spine ends and corners worn, [cf. Abbey, Travel 416 & Tooley 263, both later coloured issues], folio, n.p., [1785-88].⁂ Some of the earliest views of India by an English artist and including the first printed depiction of the Taj Mahal (plate 15 'View of the Fort of Agra'). Hodges had been draughtsman on Cook's second voyage of 1772-5, and oversaw the engraving of the plates for the published account A Voyage towards the South Pole and around the World of 1777. He then travelled in India under the patronage of Warren Hastings and these views are said to have inspired Humboldt to travel. This is the earliest issue of the work, originally published in 12 parts and with the plates uncoloured.

"E Despard", manuscript, 2pp., 2 tears along folds repaired with tape, browned, folio, 25th December 1789.⁂ Entries include: "Hire & Maintainance of five negro men attending the Superintendent when visiting the different rivers and settlements".

Corsica.- Herries (Sir Robert, merchant and banker, c. 1731-1815) Observations on the Estate of Marbeuf, in the Island of Corsica, & on the plan of an Establisment of Agriculture & Commerce there; with Proposals for a loan thereon, manuscript, 3pp., folio, [1792]; and a small group of material relating to the estate, 23pp., folio & 4to (sm. qty).⁂ Includes proposals for loans to buy the property and an agreement in French for the terms under which the estate was going to be farmed. Herries had options to grow tobacco, vines, mulberry bushes for silk, soap making and olive oil. The enterprise was sanctioned by the French government but the project came to an end with the revolution.

Toulon.- Archive of papers and contemporary copies relating to a dispute between Admiral Hood and Lieutenant-General David Dundas over the capture of French vessels in Toulon in 1793, many to Colonel John Drinkwater, author of "A History of the Late Siege of Gibraltar", Dundas (11 ALs.s.), John Drinkwater (1 ALs) & 8 letters and documents by French officers, manuscripts in French and English, c. 70pp., folds, browned, folio et infra, 1804-05.⁂ After the Treaty of Amiens, Admiral Hood was granted, on the submission of a petition, prize money for himself, officers and men of the Royal Navy, for the "capture" and removal to England of ships from the French fleet during the siege of Toulon in 1793. In 1804, when the award was published, General Dundas, commander of the British army in Toulon, first heard of Hood's claim and immediately contested the matter, claiming a share of the money for himself and the other soldiers who had served at Toulon. Many of the letters are by General Dundas and attempt to show that Hood had deceived the Privy Council and presented "a varnished tale".

Wellington (Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of, army officer and prime minister, 1769-1852) Letter signed to George Dawson, 1p., folio, Headquarters, Paris, 1st October 1815, accompanying the decorations of a Knight of the Order of Maximilian Joseph, King of Bavaria, "has sent me for you in testimony of His Majesty's approbation of your Services, and conduct, particularly in the late Battles fought in the Netherlands", and Wellington writes that he has applied to the Prince Regent for the honoured officers to accept the decoration; and 3 others, comprising: (1) Printed form for a statement of Dawson-Damer's military service, printed form with autograph insertions; (2) Printed notice from George Nayler of the College of Arms, 29th January 1816, announcing the Prince Regent's nomination of Dawson-Damer to the Order of the Bath (duplicate), folds, browned (4).⁂ Colonel George Lionel Dawson-Damer (1788-1856), politician; present at the Battle of Waterloo.

Smith of Teign Villa, Teignmouth, Devon, fl. 1825) Collection of 24 Autograph Letters signed "Henry" & incomplete Autograph Letters to his fiancée Fanny Smith, of Devon, together c. 100pp. & address panels and the remains of wax seals, 4to & folio, Whitehall, Retreat South Lambeth & n.p., n.d., most 1825, affectionate letters, "I strolled into the Grape Walk for a short time to day - it is now clustered with Fruit, but Faded by the Autumn - it is not bright v green as it was at the time when I used to enjoy its retirement with you as my delightful companion", tears along folds, a few tears to edges, browned (qty).

Breviary.- Single leaf, manuscript on parchment, single column, 24/25 lines, written in a neat late Carolingian hand with a few features more angular, some capitals set out, one blank space for initial, some marginalia in a different hand, this same hand has drawn a detailed pen-portrait of a man's face, slightly scuffed and water-stained, small folio, 261 x 188 mm., possibly France, 12th century.⁂ This leaf from a twelfth-century Breviary contains part of the readings for the Dominica in Quinquagesima, and in particular the final part of Luke:18 (from 'adsumpsit Iesus duodecim discipulos suos' until the end), as well as the first part of the homily De illuminatione caecitas humanae by Gregorius Magnus. The original liturgical manuscript was probably produced in a scriptorium located at a Cistercian monastery.

"The Temple of Heaven & the Temple of Agriculture stand close together in walled Parks... . The actual walls are very solid, of earth faced with large bricks & protected by wooden tiled roofs of which the eaves project a good way. Each has two gates, opposite each other, & each gate is painted and has three arches. The buildings of the Temple of Agriculture consist of Halls with glazed gum tiles, the enclosing wall is almost perfect." - I.C. Hannah.
