Authored by Francesco Poli and Corrado Mingardi, and published by Thames and Hudson in 2013, condition is almost ‘as new’ with only minor marks to the case.

Henry Peter Francis Ellison (1931-1965). [Author of Brother James, London: New Authors, 1960, a novel that gently satirises the art world]. Manuscript art portfolio, 62pp. illustrations & text, pen & ink with watercolour, two larger illustrations folding, two loosely-inserted packaging designs and various examination certificates for Ellison in Illustration & Arts and Crafts. The manuscript deals with five subjects: A History of Everyday Things; A History of Clothing; A History of Architecture; Lettering; Anatomy Diagrams. The illustrations are charming and evocative of the period, with some drawings and typography reminiscent of Ravilious and Bawden. Folio, quarter-cloth, stitched, block-printed boards. Contents mostly well-preserved & bright, some wear in places, some loss to one of the font/typography designs

Fabris (Salvatore). Della Vera Pratica & Scienza d'armi libri due opera di Salvator Fabris Capo Dell'Ordine di i sette Chori. (The True Practice of Weapons Science). 1624. Serious loss of approximately 4 inches to much of the contents due to rodent damage. Some plates and pages damaged less, but on all the pages some loss has occurred. 190 plates (printed back to back on most pages), as found. The work is extremely scarce so sold as found with all faults. The artistry in the plates and the swordsmen’s stances still show signs, where better preserved, of their beauty. Folio.

Sein bekanntestes Werk "Commentarii de Iure civili" ist einer der ersten Versuche, das Thema des römischen Rechts in einer logischen Reihenfolge abzuhandeln, statt sie an der Abfolge der Bücher und Titel der iustinianischen Gesetzgebung zu orientieren. In diesem epochalen Werk löste er etliche Widersprüche, auf die er in den römischen Quellen der Digesten, Institutionen und des Codex stieß. Im Interesse des Bildungsanspruchs löste er sie häufig kurzerhand im Rahmen genereller Dogmen auf, da ihm an einem rechtlichen System höchstmöglicher Allgemeingültigkeit gelegen. Jugendstil - - Ida Stauber. Album mit 29 floralen und 7 technischen Original-Zeichnungen, davon fünf farbig. Um 1900. Federzeichnungen, teils in Aquarelle und Gouache gehöht. 24 hs. numm. Bll. Quer-Folio. Lwd. d. Zt. mit goldgepr. Namen und floraler Vignette auf VDeckel (etwas berieben, untere Ecken mit Fehlstellen). Skizzenbuch mit feingliedrigen und meist floralen Darstellungen im Jugendstil einer talentierten Zeichenschülerin namens Ida Strauber. Die Blätter sind je signiert und mit Jahrgangsnummer versehen. Fünf der floralen Zeichnungen sind überaus prächtig und harmonisch koloriert. Denkbar ist eine kunstgewerbliche Bestimmung für die Entwürfe, ein Blatt stellt beispielweise eine Schnalle mit reichem Rankenwerk dar. Die technischen Zeichnungen sind mit Bezeichnungen in ungarischer Sprache versehen und zeigen u.a. Übungen zu Schneckenlinien und geometrische Formen wie Zylinder und Quader. Sie sind eingefasst in dekorativen, arabesken Bordüren. - Durchgehend etwas stockfleckig, vereinzelt stärker. Insgesamt wohl erhalten, die Farben leuchtend. Art Nouveau - Album with 29 floral and 7 technical original drawings, five of them coloured. Pen-and-ink drawings, partly heightened with watercolours and gouache. 24 hand numbered leaves. Black cont. cloth with gold-stamped name and floral vignette on front cover (somewhat rubbed, lower corners with missing parts). - Sketchbook with delicate and mostly floral depictions in Art Nouveau style by a talented drawing student named Ida Strauber. The sheets are each signed. Five of the floral drawings are extremely splendid and harmoniously coloured. It is conceivable that the designs were intended for arts and crafts; one sheet, for example, depicts a buckle with rich tendril work. The technical drawings are labelled in Hungarian and show, among other things, exercises in scroll lines and geometric forms such as cylinders and cuboids. They are framed by decorative arabesque borders. - Throughout somewhat foxed, occasionally stronger. Overall well preserved, the colors bright.

Erste Ausgabe des prachtvoll illustrierten Berichts über China und die Philippinen durch den französischen Sinologen und Lexikographen Chrétien-Louis-Joseph de Guignes. De Guignes lebte 17 Jahre lang in China, teilweise als französischer Gesandter und Konsul in Kanton. Darüber hinaus war er als Dolmetscher bei der niederländischen Botschaft in Peking (1794-1795) unter der Leitung von Titsingh und Van Braam tätig. Sein eindrucksvoller Reisebericht erzählt von seinen Erfahrungen in China, mit Illustrationen nach Skizzen, die er vor Ort gemacht hat. De Guignes' Erzählung bietet eine interessante und persönliche Perspektive auf die Botschaft in Peking. - Er war der Sohn des angesehenen Sinologen Joseph de Guignes und Korrespondent der Académie des Sciences und der Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Rare complete, and well presevered copy with text and atlas. - First edition of the beautifully illustrated report on China and the Philippines by the French sinologist and lexicographer Chrétien-Louis-Joseph de Guignes. De Guignes lived in China for 17 years, partly as a French envoy and consul in Canton. He also worked as an interpreter at the Dutch Embassy in Beijing (1794-1795) under the direction of Titsingh and Van Braam. His impressive travelogue tells of his experiences in China, with illustrations based on sketches he made on the spot. De Guignes' narrative offers an interesting and personal perspective on the embassy in Beijing. - He was the son of the distinguished sinologist Joseph de Guignes and correspondent of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He wrote an important dictionary, the "Dictionnaire Chinois-Français et Latin" (1813). The wide-margined panels show people, genre scenes, architecture, urban and rural life, views of towns and villages, clothing and religion. The maps show Canton, Macao, China, Philippines and Manila. Text volumes with stamps at the beginning. Text volumes rarely minimally browned or spotted, one atlas page in the white margin with minimal lack. Otherwise good copy with strong plates.

Moderne HLwd. mit Marmordeckeln und montiertem Deckelschild (etwas berieben). Mit Wasserzeichen (Löwe mit Schwert und Initialen C.D.L.). - Das außergewöhnliche Manuskript vereint 18 handgeschriebene Fabeln in fein leserlicher und geschwungener Schrift. Die lavierten Federzeichnungen, welche die Fabeln begleiten sind mit äußerster Sorgfalt ausgeführt und illustrieren das Werk wunderbar in ihrer minutiösen Darstellung der Tiere und Landschaften. Als Vorbild für das vorliegende Manuskript und die Zeichnungen schien eine von Sadeler illustrierte Ausgabe der Fabeln zu dienen, welche 1743 in Paris erschien: Les fables d'Ésope gravées par Sadeler, avec un discours préliminaire & les sens moraux en distiques. - Papierbedingt gebräunt. Im oberen Rand etwas gewellt. Vereinzelt etwas fleckig. Einige Bll. mit kleinem Wasserfleck. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. French manuscript with 18 hand drawings. Late 18th / early 19th c. Modern half cloth with marbled boards and mounted cover label (somewhat rubbed). - With watermark (lion with sword and initials C.D.L.). - This extraordinary manuscript combines 18 handwritten fables in finely legible and curved script. The pen-and-ink drawings accompanying the fables are executed with the utmost care and beautifully illustrate the work in their meticulous depiction of animals and landscapes. The model for the present manuscript and drawings seems to have been a French edition of the fables illustrated by Sadeler in 1743. - Paper browned. Somewhat wavy in the upper part. Sporadically somewhat spotted. A few leaves with a small water stain. Overall very well preserved.

With numerous text lithographs and 13 large-format hand-signed colour lithographs, as well as an extra suite of 13 large-format hand-signed colour lithographs on Japan. Rare, no copy traceable to us in international trade. - One of 35 copies of the special edition on Vélin d'Arches with the extra suite of all works on Japon Nacré. The lithographs, some of them erotic, were printed by the Ateliers Guillard. The typography was done by Dominique Viglino. - With wide margins and in good condition.

Feder und Deckweiß auf festem, dunklen Papier. Gezeichnet auf 24 Albumseiten, je unter dekorativem Schutzhemdchen. Folio. In Lwd.-Album d. Zt. Die umfangreiche Sammlung zeigt überaus kunstfertig ausgearbeitete Entwürfe für Monogramm-Vignetten, welche durch die Verwendung von Deckweiß und Feder und den somit entstehenden Hell-Dunkel-Kontrast stark plastisch wirken. Der anonyme Urheber bediente sich sowohl des stylistischen Vokabulars des Jugendstils mit seinen eleganten Kurven, langgeschwungenen Linien und vegetabilen Elementen als auch strenger geometrischer Formen wie sie im aufkommenden Art Déco zu finden sind. Auf jeder Albumseite befinden sich zwischen vier und sieben verschiedene Entwürfe in unterschiedlichen Größen, je mit einer handschriftlichen Inventar-Nummer versehen. - Einige wenige Entwürfe minimal atelierspurig und berieben. In contemp. cloth album. - The extensive collection shows very skilfully worked out designs for monogram vignettes, which appear very vivid by the use of opaque white and pen and the resulting light-dark contrast. The anonymous author used both the stylistic vocabulary of Art Nouveau with its elegant curves, long curved lines and vegetal elements as well as strict geometric forms as found in the emerging Art Déco. Each album page contains between four and seven different designs in various sizes, each with a handwritten inventory number. - A few designs minimally studio-marked and rubbed. Overall very well preserved.
