According to Schwerdt ÒPerfect copies are rarely found... some of plates of arms, especially the 10th, and the plate of horsemanship, inscribed to Sir John Skeffington are often missing (both present in this copy). The `Gentlemans Recreation` contains an enormous store of information and is compiled in two parts, of which the former treats of geography and navigation, while the latter deals with field sports and agricultureÓ. OSBORNE THOMAS: (1632-1712) 1st Duke of Leeds. English Statesman, Lord High Treasurer 1673-79 and Lord President of the Council 1689-99. D.S., Danby, one page, folio, Wallingford House, 14th May 1677. The manuscript warrant is addressed to Sir Robert Howard and orders him to pay to Thomas Blagrave `one of his Maties. Mussitians` the sum of forty pounds nine shillings and two pence, being his yearly fee. Neatly mounted and with some age wear and minor paper loss to the edges and with a lengthy tear (neatly repaired), just affecting part of the text but not the signature. About G Thomas Blagrave (c.1622-1688) English Musician and Singer, a member of King Charles II`s private band of violins. Sir Robert Howard (1626-1698) English Playwright and Politician, Secretary to the Treasury 1671-73 and Auditor of the Exchequer 1673-98.

L.S., Albert, as Acting Great Master of the Order of the Bath, one page, folio, Buckingham Palace, 21st June 1844, to Major General Sir Robert Henry Sale. The Prince announces `The Queen having been graciously pleased to issue a Royal Warrant dispensing with the ceremony of your Investiture and empowering you to wear and use the Star and Ribband and Badge of a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath in as full and ample a manner as if you had been formally invested by Her Majesty` and therefore adds that he has the duty to transmit to Sale the necessary decorations and Royal Warrant (neither present). With blank integral leaf. Some extremely minor, light age wear to the left edge, VG Major General Sir Robert Henry Sale (1782-1845) British Army Officer who commanded the garrison of Jalalabad during the First Afghan War 1841-42 and was killed in action during the First Anglo-Sikh War. Sale`s investiture, referred to in the present letter, did not take place as he was serving in India.

GUSTAVUS II ADOLPHUS: (1594-1632) King of Sweden 1611-32, known as `The Lion of the North`, regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time and credited as the founder of Sweden as a Great Power. Rare D.S., Gustavus Adolphus, as King, one page, folio, Army Camp at Berson (near Kokenhusen, present day Latvia), 6th December 1625. The manuscript document is an Order to the General Quarter Master of the field army to secure sufficient provisions of food for the troops and ordering supplies for Gerdt Didrichsson, Master of the Stables, of hides, alum, salt, tallow, nails for shoeing horses etc., and money to also be made available. Signed by the King at the foot. With integral address leaf bearing a blind embossed paper seal. An attractive and clean document, VG The present document is signed shortly before the King`s significant victory in the Battle of Wallhof on 7th January 1626, fought between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

KITCHENER HERBERT: (1850-1916) British Field Marshal. Two Ls.S., H H Kitchener, each one page, folio, Cairo (?), 1888 & 1889, to the Head of the Department of Seizure and Coordination, in Arabic. The official manuscript letters of introduction appear to refer to several Egyptian lieutenants under Kitchener`s command, named as First Lieutenant Ali and Second Lieutenant Shaaban, and states that they have recently served in the Police warehouse. Kitchener writes to enable the lieutenants to approach a high ranking official, in charge of the department for the seizure of land and assets, most likely in the Sudan. Together with a third Arabic letter (not signed by Kitchener) on the stationery of the office of the Surveyor General at the War Office, Cairo. Some age wear to the edges and one letter with an extensive, although neat, split at the fold. G to about VG, 3

ALS A mounted 18 x 22.5cm letter from Edward VII when Prince of Wales on headed ""Marlborough House"", black bordered paper, dated ""May 8 / 79"" and signed at foot ""Alber."". One folio, written in ink on the front and the last page and addressed to Colonel Stanley Clarke. The prince offers his condolences to Clarke for the ""irreparable loss"" of his mother. Two mailing folds with some browning and light wear to corners. Accompanied by the original black bordered envelope, postmarked ""London, S.W., Z. MY 8, 79"". Framed and glazed, overall size 27 x 35.8cm. Stanley Clarke was a close friend of the Prince of Wales. Even though he did not have particular military merits, he was appointed Commander of the Light Camel regiment during the Sudan war in order to please the future king.

Remon"" to lower right corner, mounted, framed and glazed (overall size 27 x 30.5cm). A 37.5 x 27 copy of ""Ces Instants Merveilleux"", in folio, 1988 with original light blue case. A poster ""Foundation Auguste Escoffier, Musee de l`art Culinaire, Cent Menus Illustrats par J. P. Renon"", signed and inscribed ""Pour David de la de son ami, Jean Pierre"". Two invitation cards addressed to David Campbell from Remon, one with signed note. Lot also includes two letters to Campbell written by Fanny Brennan and two invitations to Brennan exhibitions of ""small paintings"" at Betty Parsons Gallery, dated 1977 and 1981. Plus a 61 x 45 black and white photograph of Place Vendome by Marcel-Arthaud, c. 1940. David Campbell was Chef de Reception at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, as well as President and Founder of the AICR. He became friend to many artists throughout his career.
