ADMIRAL SIR JOHN DUCKWORTH / CHARLES BRISBANE: AN AUTOGRAPH ORDER OF BATTLE FOR THE JAMAICA STATION FROM 24TH MAY 1803Charles Brisbane`s copy of the Order of Battle and Order of Sailing, written in a clear hand over a single folio sheet and detailing the eight 74s and their Commanders and a sketch drawing of starting positions, annotated in lower margin: To. Charles Brisbane Esqr. Captain of HM Ship Goliath. By Command of the Rear Admiral... Given on Board the Leviathan Port Royal Harbour Jamaica this 24th May 1803 and signed `J.T. Duckworth` — 12½ x 15½in. (32 x 39.5cm.); together with a portrait print, probably a bookplate, of Brisbane from 1808, in period frame.(2) In 1803 Duckworth assumed the chief command at Jamaica where he was again preoccupied with the affairs of San Domingo. Considerable French reinforcements there threatened the American mainland as well as British possessions. It seems this Order of Battle was a sensible precaution in case they were surprised but was never in fact required. The eight 74`s under his command were: Hercule (Solomon Ferris); Theseus (John Bligh); Bellepheron (John Loring); Leviathan (Duckworth/Capt. Dunn); Cumberland (Bayntun); Elephant (George Dundas); Goliath (Charles Brisbane) and Vanguard (James Walker). Duckworth was promoted vice-admiral in April 1804.
