*Anne (Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, 1665-1714). Document Signed, 'Anne R' at the head, Given at Kensington, 12 April 1706, appointing John Burnett ensign 'in the Regiment of Foot to be forthwith raised for Our Service Commanded by Our Trusty & Welbeloved Colonell Roger Townshend; of that Company whereof he himself is Captain', manuscript on vellum, age-soiled and lacking the papered seal, but entirely legible, inlaid in archival paper, oblong folio (24.5 x 36 cm) Roger Townshend, who died in 1709, was MP for Nortfolk and later for Great Yarmouth; he was the brother of Charles, second Viscount Townshend (1674-1738), politician, diplomatist and agricultural innovator, who earned the nickname 'Turnip Townshend' for his championship of the humble vegetable, which he cultivated in a new fashion and used in a successful scheme of crop rotation.
