CUSTINE ADAM PHILIPPE DE: (1742-1793) Comte de Custine. French General serving in the Seven Year´s war, and in the American revolutionary war. Custine was found guilty of treason before the Committee on Public Safety's Revolutionary Tribunal by Fouquier-Tinville, and guillotined, his son was also executed a few months later. L.S., Custine, one page, folio, Strasbourg, 14th April 1793, to the Minister of war, in French. Custine sends a request explaining that Chief Brigade Bizy should not be sent to the coast army and suggesting that he should remain as Director of the fortifications, stating in part `..we must continue and improve on this border in this moment when armies of enemies are threating us..´ The present letter was signed by Custine only few months before being guillotined. Folded. Overall age wear to the borders, with damaged right edge. F £80-100 Jean Baptiste Noël Bouchotte (1754-1840) Minister of war from 4th to 20th April.
