At the time of the present letter John II is King of Navarre through his wife, and would become King of Aragon three years later when his brother King Alfonso V died in 1458. John II, in his capacity as Governor and Lieutenant of his brother the King, instructs the Xativa justice department to declare null the decisions taken regarding Mr. Sallent and the death of a moor, and recommends that in future they do not interfere and disturb Mr. Sallent. Together with MARIA ISABELLA OF SPAIN (1789-1848) Queen consort of the Two Sicilies as spouse of Francis I, and Infanta of Spain as daughter of Charles IV of Spain. The partially printed document shows a very attractive heading "Wilhelm by Grace of God, King of Prussia", beneath a large printed eagle crowned, and states in part `We have appointed former prosecutor Karl Friedrich Theodor Ernst Hahn in Ratibor to Council at Tribunal. We expect loyal and obedient services to our King´s House…´ The document bears beneath the Emperor´s signature a large and attractive blind embossed Imperial seal. Countersigned by Leopold von Lippe. With blank integral leaf. Folded, with extremely small tear to the right edge not affecting the text or signatures. VG £100-150

PHILIP II: (1527-1598) King of Spain 1556-98. During his marriage to Queen Mary I of England, he was King of England and Ireland 1554-58. Rare L.S., `Yo El Rey´, one page, folio, Madrid, July 1572, to Captain Gil Hernandez de Sotomayor, in old Spanish. The King sends specific instructions regarding the number of soldiers he has to regroup, how much they will be paid, `You will take three hundred men, and lead them until they embark, including ensigns, sergeants, arquebusiers,…you will pay them…all officers and soldiers of the company together with good people of the Mancha territories to San Juan..´ Countersigned by Juan Delgado. A large water stain affecting a large part of the document and text, although remaining legible, but not affecting the signature. Centre tears largely repaired to the verso. Many tears to the irregular edges and small area of paper loss to the left bottom corner. P £250-350

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. N.S., Napol, to the right margin of a D.S. by several officers, three pages, folio, Paris, 1st December 1810, in French. The partially printed document from the War Minister, provisions department, is a letter addressed to the Emperor referring to previous Napoleon´s orders related to a large purchase of wheat, with a lengthy explanation regarding the different prices options as well as the provenance and port where the wheat could be shipped. To the right margin, annotated in the Emperor´s secretary hand `Ancona is the most favourable place, unless we can make the purchase in Hungary and make them shipped through Trieste… because there is apparently no hostilities, we could get half of the supply now and the other half next year, and therefore by 1812 we would have received the whole requested.´ Small overall, minor age wear to the edges. Folded. VG £600-900 The day after the present letter was signed, Napoleon lost the Ile de France, today Mauritius, captured by the English, and few weeks after the alliance between France and Russia was broken.

STANISLAW II: (1732-1798) Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania 1764-95. Lover of Catherine the Great, he was a great patron of the arts, but still remains a controversial figure in Polish history. A good D.S., Stanislaus Augustus Rex´, with holograph `Bonus Frater et.., one page, folio, Warsaw, 22nd December 1775, to King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, at the time of the present letter King of Naples and Sicily, in Latin. Stanislaw II refers to the letter received from King Ferdinand and congratulates him for the new born Princess Maria Anna. She would die in childhood at the age of 4. With blank address leaf, bearing a very large and attractive blind embossed royal paper seal. Folded, with small overall age wear. VG £300-400

PERCY PIERRE-FRANÇOIS: (1754-1825) French Doctor and Chief Surgeon of the Grande Armée during the Napoleonic wars. He invented a new kind of ambulance usable on battlefield. A good set of three documents, including an A.L.S., `Percy´, two pages, folio, , n.p., 10th July 1818, to Saucerotte, in French. Percy tells his correspondent that he is still waiting for his visit which he promised to his father and sends a request `..please make [a visit] to chevalier de Lormerie, who is staying under the Royal Palace arcades. This gentleman wishes very much to meet you and talk to you..´ further saying `..when you will see me going to university, something that happens daily, come to see me..´ Together with A.L., in the hand of Percy, one page, 4to, in French. Percy refers to the Asian progress in the medical field, stating in part `..They had the first kind of hospitals that were named Marastins. Rhazes was leading the Bagdad hospital, he explains having seen the biggest successes and also the most terrible errors…Most of the times doctors were Israelite, like Debou-Gazazi, Izaac..´, Also including an A.L.S., by Percy´s widow, one page, 8vo, Paris, 13th February 1828, to Vicount Morel de Vindé, in French. The document being a decree to the Chapter of Russian Imperial Royal Orders, with the attestation of the Archpriest of Riga´s St. Peter and St. Paul Church, Ioann Diakonov, by the honour bestowed by the Most Holy Synod, and by which Baron Pahlen is awarded with the St. Anne Order of second degree. A bold signature example by the Emperor, with flourish. SALGARI EMILIO: (1862-1911) Italian Writer of adventure swashbucklers. A pioneer of science fiction, he is considered the father of Italian adventure fiction. His work was widely read in Italy and his most popular novels have been adapted as comics, animated series and films. Rare D.S., Emilio Salgari, one page, folio, Genoa, 4th May 1901, in Italian. The cleanly hand-written letter being a contract between Antonio Donath, editor, and Emilio Salgari, the last granting the exclusivity for the publication in Italy of his novel La Capitana del Yucatan, an adventure work set during time of war and revolution. The contract states `Signor Donath has pait to Signor Emilio Salgari the total amount of 666,70 lire..´ Signed by Salgari in blue fountain pen ink, and by Antonio Donath at the base of the document. Together with D.S., Antonio Donath, one page, folio, Genoa, 30th March 1908, being the official registration of the contract for La Capitana del Yucatan of Salgari to the Italian Ministry. With printed typed registration and ink stamp of the Genoa Prefecture. Also included D.S., two pages, 4to, Genoa, 2nd September 1908, being the Genoa Prefecture partially printed document for the La Capitana del Yucatan copyrights. The letter bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed stationery seal "Henry Schliemann - St. Petersburg", and relates to the purchase of `72 and 51 Java Indigo crates´, their prices, delivery, etc... At that time Schliemann, through fortunate commercial undertakings, laid the foundation stone for his fortune which later enabled him to excavate in Greece and Asia Minor. SARTRE JEAN PAUL: (1905-1980) French Philosopher & Novelist. A highly influential and leading figure in the Philosophy of existentialism and Marxism. Although he refused to receive the award, Sartre was appointed Nobel laureate in Literature, 1964. T.L.S., `Lu et approuvé - J.Sartre´, two pages, folio, Buenos Aires, 11th April 1957, in Spanish, with an additional typed clause in French. The document being a a translation contract between the “Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques de Paris”, on behalf of Jean Paul Sartre, and Ricardo Risetti and Gabriella Grosso as translators, the whole related to Sartre´s work L´Engranage, (1946). Signed at the base by Sartre and the rest of participants. Matted in black, alongside a colour 8 x 10 photograph of Sartre, to an overall size of 17 x 12. Easily removable. VG £200-300

A very good, lengthy and important signed autograph manuscript, `Garbé´, six pages, folio, Bayonne, 14th July 1813, to Marshal Soult, in French. The lengthy and very interesting report refers to the troops return from Spain and to the military strategy to plan the defence of the city and fortifications of Bayonne `These are the advantages that the situation of the city of Bayonne presents for a good defence of it…and the inconvenients of such same situation, which we are going to study successively in detail.´. The text contains full and specific details of each of the city borders and explains how to reinforce the weak ones. VG £100-150

Fine D.S., Alexander, in Cyrillic, one page, oblong folio, Saint Petersburg, 16th November 1802, to Counsellor Franz Labensky, in Cyrillic. The partially printed document being a title recognition given to Labensky stating `Let it be known to all that the Most Excellent and Great Sovereign, the Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias Pavel Petrovich of blessed memory, our dear father, conferred the title of Court Counsellor to Franz Labensky for his zeal and diligence on 4th December, 1798. Franz Labensky had served as Collegiate Assessor to his Majesty, but had not obtained commission until now. We order all our subjects to acknowledge and respect Franz Labensky according to his rank. We hope he will serve in this position as faithfully and diligently as a loyal subject should.´ With a large and attractive paper seal affixed to the bottom left corner, in very fine condition. Countersigned by State Chancellor Alexander Vorontsov. Folded to the centre. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, with left edge slightly irregularly cut, otherwise G £1500-2000 Alexander Romanovich Vorontsov (1741-1805) Russian Count and Cancellor of Russian Empire under Alexander I. Vorontsov in permanent opposition to Nikita Panin always defended coalition with Austria and Great Britain, instead of with France and Prussia. He was a key figure in the rupture with Napoleon.

The typed document bears two `SECRET´ red ink stamps to the heading and bottom page, and is an authorization given by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Venezuela, Infantry division of Batacaza, under the command of General Manuel Cedeño, to Vice-Lieutenant Chavez Frias Hugo Rafael. The document states that `Lieutenant Colonel, and first Commandant of Batacaza, authorize citizen Vice-Lieutenant Chavez Frias Hugo Rafael to handle military information and material considered Secret.´ Folded, with seven file holes to the left border, and two holes with tear, none affecting the signatures. The partially printed document bears at the heading a very attractive vignette of the Directoire Executif. Carnot, in his capacity as President of the Directory, sends his congratulations to his correspondent, stating `..the national recognition for the actions honouring the defenders of the Republic, and to congratulate you for having so intensely contributed to the multiple successes obtained our brave army you are serving..´ Countersigned by Jean Joseph Lagarde (1755-1839) in his capacity as Secretary of the Directory. With blank integral leaf. A very small tear to the upper edge and a very small hole not affecting the text or signatures. With remnants of former affixing to the fourth blank page. G £150-200

ELIZABETH I OF RUSSIA: (1709-1762) Empress of Russia 1741-62. L.S., Elizabeth, in Cyrillic, one page, folio, Saint Petersburg, 24th January 1737, in Cyrillic. The manuscript document is a Decree to the Patrimonial Chancery, instructing that attention to Piotr Novikov´s horses has to be maintained and that the same money he was receiving when he was working for the chancery as salary has to be paid in future. Further also instructing that the sum of 150 roubles has to be paid annually to the notary Bogdanov, as well as 800 kilos of flour and oat every four months, first the flour at the beginning of each period and after, at the end of each period, the money. MALET COUP OF 1812: The Malet coup was a coup d´état attempt in Paris, 23rd October 1812, intending to remove Napoleon I from power, when he was in the Russian front. The coup was engineered by Republican general Claude François Malet. The coup failed, and the leading conspirators were executed. An excellent set of three documents signed by the main participants in the coup attempt, partners in crime and main figures related to the coup, comprising Claude François Malet (1754-1812) French General of the Empire. Malet announced the death of Napoleon using forged documentation. Executed. D.S., Malet, one page, oblong 4to, Besançon, 28th August 1797, in his capacity as Adjutant-General to the Headquarters Staff, on the printed stationery of the Hospital of Egalité and countersigned by several officers, commissars of war. The document is a health certificate of a wounded soldier; Victor Claude Fanneau de Lahorie (1766-1812) French General, executed for collaborating with Malet in his coup. A large 16 x 13.5 document signed, `Fanneau Lahorie´, one page, Nancy, 1st October 1797. The document lists the ten members of a court-martial, with their names, ranks and military services. Also signed by General Joseph Gilot (1734-1811) and François Nicolas Fririon (1766-1840); François Antoine Desnoyers (1755-1816) French General, imprisoned from 1812 to 1814 for his participation in Malet´s coup. A.L.S., Desnoyers, one page, folio, 13th January 1795, on his printed stationery, with his name and rank, Occidental Pyrenees army. VG,3 £300-400

MARTI JOSE: (1853-1895) Cuban Poet, Writer and Revolutionary Philosopher. Martí is considered a national hero as well as a leading figure in Latin American literature. He became a symbol for Cuba's fight for independence in the 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence”. An extremely interesting and rare A.L.S., `José Martí´, one page, folio, New York, 29th January 1895, on the attractive New York Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party printed stationery, in Spanish. The document being an internal communication statement to the revolutionary party. Martí states in part `Cuba is embarking upon this war with the full certainty, unacceptable only to the half-hearted sedentary Cubans, of the ability of its sons to obtain a victory through the energy of the thoughtful and magnanimous revolution, and the ability of Cuban people, developed during those early ten years of sublime fusion and in the modern practices of work and government, and the people´s work to save the Patria…´ A letter of excellent content, being a statement by Martí from exile in favour of the Cuban independence. With remnants of a former red wax seal to the upper edge and verso. Also bearing to the verso a printed heading of the Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in New York. Some very small overall, minor age wear. Folded. VG £1500-2000 Martí returned to Cuba two months after the present letter was written, and was killed in battle against Spanish troops only a month after.

LISZT FRANZ: (1811-1886) Austrian-Hungarian Composer. An excellent A.M.Q.S., `F Liszt´, a bold dark ink signature example, oblong folio musical score. The Hungarian composer has neatly penned a nine bars musical quotation on two staves, writing immediately above the tempo `Alegretto´, also dated beneath the quotation, 21st June 1844, in his hand. HULIN PIERRE AUGUSTIN: (1758-1841) French General who decided to take over the Bastille. Hulin was Commandant of the Headquarters in Paris at the time of the coup attempt. Hulin did not accept Malet´s orders after he made several questions asking for further explanations. Malet took his gun and shot, breaking Hulin´s jaw. L.S., Hulin, one page, folio, 6th February 1814, to the Duke de Feltre. Hulin refers to a letter received from General Berryer, Soisson Commandant, and requests orders based on the letter content, and mentions having forwarded a second copy to King Joseph Bonaparte, acting on behalf of Napoleon I during his absence. A FOLIO FROM A DISPERSED COPY OF FIRDAUSI'S SHAHNAMA, PROBABLY DELHI, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY gouache with ink and gold on paper, the cruciform illumination depicting Rostam catching the horse Rakhsh, four columns of five lines of nastaliq script in each corner, the reverse with four further columns of nastaliq 19 x 11cm (illustration); 29 x 17.5cm (folio) Rostam was given the pick of wild horses by his father and chose a particularly spirited one which he later named Rakhsh (lightening). The more experienced soldiers tried for three years to catch him without success, but eventually Rostam himself managed the feat, providing his qualities as a warrior. Descriptions in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports and all lots are sold as viewed. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in good condition.
