Palladio was primarily active as an architect in Venice, Vicenza, and along the Brenta river, where he built magnificent villas for wealthy members of the Venetian patriciate. This authoritative and influential treatise celebrates the purity and simplicity of classical architecture, drawing its inspiration from Roman sources, especially Vitruvius, and Italian Renaissance architects, above all Leon Battista Alberti. The work is divided into four parts or libri, devoted to orders and elementary problems, domestic buildings, public buildings, and town planning and temples. "Palladio followed the rules of classical Roman architecture more closely than any other architect, even sometimes at the cost of practicability and domestic comfort. In spite of the vogue for the baroque and the fact that Palladio left no immediate successors, his book exerted a powerful influence on contemporary architecture and classical ideals until the end of the eighteenth century [...] 'Palladianism' became a party label in the world of connoisseurship and England blossomed with buildings 'in the Palladian style' - two centuries after Palladio had created it. From England the style made its way into Scotland, Ireland and America" (PMM). The treatise was reprinted and translated many times over the following centuries. Within the splendid series of woodcuts which accompany the text, especially noteworthy are those in the second libro depicting plans and elevations of villas, including the famous Villa Maser built for Palladio's patron Daniello Barbaro. Literature: Mortimer Italian, 352; Berlin Katalog 2592; Cicognara 594; Fowler 212; Olschki Choix, 15125; PMM 92.

Scotland.- Clerk (John) A Series of Etchings Chiefly of Views in Scotland, engraved portrait, 57 etched and lithographed plates (comprising 55 numbered and 2 unnumbered), many with multiple images, some tinted, occasional foxing, mostly restricted to margins, bookplate of the Earl of Ancaster to pastedown, original cloth with paper label to upper cover, rebacked and recornered in modern red morocco, covers a little rubbed and marked, folio, Edinburgh, Lizars for the Bannatyne Club, 1855.⁂ Fine series of landscape etchings by one of Scotland's finest amateur artists - the significantly extended second edition. Clerk practised draughtmanship from an early age but was certainly encouraged to draw topographically by his friend Robert Adam, the eminent architect who became his brother-in-law. Through Adam he was introduced to Paul Sandby, the English painter and printmaker in the late 1740s, and the three men would often take drawing trips together around the region. Clerk began the practice of copper-plate etching around the 1770s and went on to produce over one hundred impressions by 1778.

There are several later Francis Kendrays recorded, but we have been unable to verify for certain that this work is by an earlier Kendray of that name, though this seems likely. Each map measures 370 x 225mm.

Rye House Plot.- Exact Account (An) of the Proceedings at the Old-Bayly...of the Tryal of the Lord Russel, William Hone Joyner, John Rouse, Captain William Blage, 4pp., drop-head title, spotted, tipped into album of blank leaves, later half calf, [Wing E3580, 4 UK locations and 3 in America], folio, Edinburgh, Re-printed by the Heir of Andrew Anderson, 1683.⁂ The Rye House plot was a conspiracy to kill King Charles II and his brother James, Duke of York, as they passed through Hertfordshire on the way back to London from the races at Newmarket. The conspirators were an extremist Whig group who were alarmed at the King's Catholic sympathies and the future succession of James who was known to be a Catholic. Anti-Catholic hysteria engulfed the country following the Popish Plot, instigating Parliament to introduce the Exclusion Bill in 1681 which would prevent James from succeeding Charles. The King dissolved Parliament to stop the Bill being passed precipitating many conspiracies such as this. In the end a fire at Newmarket caused the races to be cancelled so Charles and James returned to London early and the plotters missed their chance. Several notable figures were involved in the plot, many being executed like Lord Russell, imprisoned or exiled. Among those who fled to Holland was the Duke of Monmouth, Charles II's illegitimate son, who was himself beheaded following the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, another attempt to overthrow James, by then James II.Also tipped into the volume is a facsimile of An Account of the Proceedings against the Rebels at an Assize holden at Exeter... of 1685, listing several of those involved in the Monmouth Rebellion and their trial for treason.
